Embracing the Coastal Breeze and Artistic Soul of Essaouira

Today was a day of embracing the serene coastal beauty and the vibrant artistic spirit that Essaouira so effortlessly exudes. From the calming waves of Sidi Kaouki Beach to the delightful experience of horseback riding and the discovery of unique artisan crafts, every moment was a brushstroke painting a vivid picture of this Moroccan gem.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Chez Rachid. I opted for the traditional Moroccan pancakes, Msemen, while Fatou enjoyed some fresh fruit and yogurt. The strong, sweet Moroccan mint tea was the perfect start to fuel our adventures. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a delightful experience. It reminded me of the small tea shops back in Kuntaur, where the community gathers to share stories and laughter. It’s these simple moments that truly connect me to a place.

After breakfast, we set off for Sidi Kaouki Beach, a short drive south of Essaouira. The drive itself was scenic, with argan trees dotting the landscape. Sidi Kaouki is known for its laid-back vibe, a stark contrast to the bustling Essaouira medina. As we arrived, the vast expanse of golden sand met the crashing waves of the Atlantic, creating a mesmerizing scene. The September sun was warm, but the ocean breeze kept it comfortable. It was the perfect weather to enjoy the beach without the scorching heat of summer.

We strolled along the shore, hand in hand, watching the surfers ride the waves. Sidi Kaouki is a popular spot for surfing and windsurfing, and it was fascinating to watch the skilled athletes glide effortlessly across the water. I even considered trying my hand at surfing, but Fatou convinced me that perhaps a leisurely walk was more our speed. I have to admit, she was right. The rhythmic sound of the waves and the salty air was incredibly soothing. It was a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Bielefeld, and I found myself completely relaxed.

The beauty of a place lies not just in its landmarks, but in the moments of peace and connection it offers.

Next on our agenda was Zouina Cheval, a stable offering horseback riding experiences along the beach. I had always wanted to ride a horse on the beach, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. Fatou, ever the adventurous one, was equally excited. The stable was well-maintained, and the horses looked healthy and well-cared for. We were introduced to our horses, and after a brief introduction to riding, we set off along the beach.

The experience was exhilarating. Riding along the shore, with the wind in our hair and the sound of the waves accompanying us, was truly magical. The horses were gentle and responsive, making the ride enjoyable even for a novice like me. Fatou, who had ridden horses before, was in her element, confidently guiding her horse along the water's edge. I couldn't help but feel a sense of freedom and joy. It was a moment I will cherish forever. It reminded me of my childhood in Kuntaur, where riding donkeys was a common mode of transport. This was a definite upgrade!

After our horseback adventure, we were both quite hungry. We decided to have lunch at Restaurant Sayef, a beachfront eatery known for its fresh seafood. The restaurant had a relaxed, rustic charm, with wooden tables and chairs set right on the sand. We ordered grilled fish and a seafood tagine, both of which were incredibly delicious. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the tagine was flavorful and aromatic. As we ate, we enjoyed the stunning views of the ocean and the lively atmosphere of the beach.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore the Artisan Craft Atelier back in Essaouira. I was eager to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home. The atelier was a treasure trove of handcrafted goods, from intricate wood carvings to colorful textiles and ceramics. I was particularly impressed by the thuya wood products, a local specialty. The craftsmanship was exquisite, and I could see the dedication and skill that went into each piece. It reminded me of the talented artisans in The Gambia, who create beautiful works of art using traditional techniques.

Fatou was drawn to the vibrant textiles, and she spent a considerable amount of time examining the different patterns and designs. She eventually settled on a beautiful handwoven scarf, which she said would be perfect for the cooler evenings in Bielefeld. I, on the other hand, was captivated by the wood carvings. I found a stunning thuya wood box, intricately carved with traditional Moroccan motifs. It was the perfect size to store my photography equipment, and I knew it would be a cherished reminder of our trip to Essaouira.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Dar Baba Restaurant & More for dinner. This restaurant is known for its blend of traditional Moroccan and international cuisine. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with soft lighting and comfortable seating. We started with some Moroccan salads, followed by a tagine and some grilled meat. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was a perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into the historical heart of Essaouira. We'll be visiting the Old Fortress with its 18th-century Portuguese cannons and the Synagogue Slat Lkahal Mogador, each promising a glimpse into the city's rich past. And to unwind, we'll be heading to Ocean Vagabond for a relaxing evening. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the cannons; it reminds me of the historical sites in Banjul. I am also interested in learning more about the Jewish history in Morocco.

As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we shared. Essaouira has a way of captivating the soul, of drawing you in with its beauty and charm. It's a place where you can relax and unwind, where you can connect with nature and with each other. It's a place where you can discover new things and create lasting memories. I am so glad that Fatou and I decided to come here, and I am looking forward to the adventures that tomorrow will bring.

Back at Riad l'Ayel d'Essaouira, I sit on our private terrace, the gentle sea breeze carrying the scent of salt and distant music. The stars are beginning to pepper the night sky, and I can hear the faint sounds of the medina winding down for the night. It’s moments like these that make traveling so rewarding. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about experiencing new things, connecting with different cultures, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. Essaouira has given us all of that and more, and I am excited to see what else this enchanting city has in store for us.
