Essaouira's Embrace: A Day of Waves, Walls, and Wonders
Today was a symphony of Essaouira's finest offerings, a blend of invigorating activities and serene discoveries. From riding the Atlantic waves to wandering through ancient fortifications and savoring exquisite local flavors, every moment was a testament to this city's unique charm. It was a day where the spirit of adventure danced with the soul of relaxation, leaving me with memories I'll cherish long after we've left its shores.
The morning began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Ramsess. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee were the perfect start to the day. Fatou and I shared a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with msemen, honey, and mint tea. It's these simple, authentic experiences that truly enrich our travels. I always appreciate how Fatou embraces these cultural moments with such enthusiasm. The restaurant itself is nestled in an 18th-century building, once a maritime agency, now adorned with vintage 1960s decor. It's a discreet spot, offering refined Judeo-Moroccan dishes suggested by the mother of the house.

Fueled and ready, we headed to Explora Watersports for some kitesurfing. The September winds in Essaouira are known to be quite favorable, and I was eager to test my skills. While I've dabbled in kitesurfing before, the conditions here were particularly challenging, with strong gusts and rolling waves. However, the instructors at Explora were fantastic, providing clear guidance and ensuring our safety. Fatou, ever the supportive wife, cheered me on from the shore, capturing my (occasional) triumphs and (more frequent) wipeouts on camera. Though Essaouira might not be the easiest spot for beginners due to the waves, the thrill of gliding across the water, harnessed by the wind, was an unforgettable experience.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering, but in embracing the wild, untamed spirit of a place.
After drying off and grabbing a quick shower back at the Riad, we were ready for a late lunch. Pasta Baladin was our chosen spot, drawn by the promise of delicious Italian cuisine with vegan options for Fatou. The restaurant is known for its well-prepared Italian dishes, especially the pasta. We shared a plate of spaghetti alle vongole and a vegan salad, both bursting with fresh flavors. The open kitchen added to the charm, allowing us to watch the chefs at work. It was a delightful culinary interlude, a reminder of the diverse influences that shape Essaouira's character. Riad Baladin is considered one of the best boutique Riads in Essaouira.

In the afternoon, we immersed ourselves in history at the Harbour Scala. This ancient fortification, built in the 18th century, once served as a crucial defense against naval invasions. Walking along the ramparts, we admired the cannons, many of which were manufactured in Seville around 1750. The views from the top were breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, the bustling harbor, and the vibrant medina. The sea breeze and the sound of crashing waves created a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for reflection. I couldn't help but imagine the soldiers who once stood guard here, protecting the city from potential threats. It's fascinating how Essaouira, once known as Mogador, has been shaped by various cultures, including Portuguese, French, and Berber.

As the day began to wind down, we ventured into the medina for some shopping at Trésors Nomades. This shop, known for its unique collection of nomadic treasures, was a delight to explore. Fatou, with her keen eye for detail, discovered several beautiful Berber carpets and intricate silver jewelry. While I'm not much of a shopper, I appreciated the craftsmanship and the stories behind each piece. The medina itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and wandering through its narrow streets, filled with the scent of spices and the sound of bustling commerce, is an experience in itself.

For our final dinner in Essaouira, we chose Restaurant Laayoune, known for its international cuisine and authentic meals. We shared a tagine and a seafood platter, savoring the flavors of Morocco one last time. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with live music and a beautifully decorated interior. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with adventure and discovery.
