Day 3: Delving into the Depths of Phong Nha: A Day of Caves and Culinary Delights
Explore the mystical Tien Son Cave and savor authentic Vietnamese flavors in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park on a captivating solo journey.
A Day of Subterranean Wonders & Culinary Exploration
Today was a day of venturing into the heart of Phong Nha-Ke Bang, both geographically and gastronomically. It was a day of exploring the earth's hidden artistry and savoring the local flavors that make this region so unique. As a mechanical engineer, I'm always fascinated by natural formations, and today's cave exploration was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The food, too, was a delightful adventure, a chance to connect with the local culture through its cuisine.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. Being mindful of my diet and the planet, I was thrilled to find a place that aligns with my values. The restaurant, overlooking the river, had such a serene vibe. I opted for a bowl of Pho, packed with fresh vegetables and flavorful broth – a perfect start to a day of exploration. It was a truly tasty meal, and I even saw some local cows and their calves walking past.

Fuelled and ready, I set off to explore Tien Son Cave. The journey to the cave was an adventure in itself. The road wound its way up the mountain, offering glimpses of the stunning landscape. As I ascended the 330 steps to the cave entrance, I paused to take in the panoramic views – villages nestled among the mountains, the serene rivers snaking through the landscape.

Tien Son Cave, also known as the Dry Cave, is perched about 200 meters above sea level. The cave was discovered in 1935, and it’s said that locals initially called it Tien Cave, because of its magical beauty. Inside, I was immediately struck by the ethereal beauty of the place. The stalactites and stalagmites created a surreal landscape, like something out of a fairy tale. The lighting, installed by international experts, highlighted the intricate formations, making the cave even more enchanting.
Nature does nothing without purpose or uselessly.
I explored about 400 meters into the cave, along a winding path between the rock formations. The cave's high dome revealed veins of color that shimmered like gold and silver. I could see why it's often called a “stalactite castle”. Touching the stalactites and stalagmites is discouraged to preserve them, but I did reach out to steady myself in a couple of spots. The temperature inside the cave was cool and comfortable, a welcome respite from the warmth outside. I learned that Tien Son Cave isn't connected to Phong Nha Cave, but they're both part of the same ancient cave system.
After the mesmerizing experience at Tien Son Cave, I was ready for lunch. I headed to Lotus Restaurant - Phong Nha, known for its delicious and artfully presented dishes. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese dish, Cao Lau, a regional specialty. It was a delightful mix of flavors and textures, and I savored every bite.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore the town a bit. I wandered through the local market, observing the vibrant scene and the locals going about their daily lives. It's these simple moments that often provide the most authentic travel experiences. I even managed to practice a few Vietnamese phrases I had learned.
For dinner, I decided to try Nhà Hàng Hải Sản Nhật Phong 3, a seafood restaurant. Though Nha Trang is where Nhà Hàng Hải Sản Nhật Phong 3 is located, I was still eager to sample some fresh seafood. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and I ordered a grilled fish dish that was cooked to perfection. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Jungle Boss Pub and Restaurant. I enjoyed a local beer while reflecting on the day's adventures. The pub had a relaxed vibe, and I struck up a conversation with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and tips. It's these connections that make solo travel so rewarding.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Hang Sơn Đoòng, an experience I'm eagerly anticipating. I've heard so much about its breathtaking beauty, and I can't wait to see it for myself. I'll be having breakfast at ARTIST'S ZONE before heading out, and I plan to grab lunch at Bamboo Chopsticks. In the evening, I'll be dining at The Villas Restaurant, and I might check out Harry's Coconuts for some local crafts.
Back at my guesthouse, I feel a sense of contentment. Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – the chance to witness nature's wonders, to immerse myself in different cultures, and to connect with people from all walks of life. It's experiences like these that broaden my perspective and enrich my soul. Though Fatou couldn't be here with me, I know she would have loved exploring the caves and sampling the local cuisine. I will definitely share all my photos and stories with her when I get back to Bielefeld. I also need to remember to get a portable charger, as my phone battery is constantly running low from all the photos I've been taking.
As I prepare for another day of adventure, I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful corner of the world. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park continues to surprise and inspire me, and I look forward to uncovering more of its hidden treasures.
