A Day of Ducks and Discoveries

Today was all about embracing the unexpected in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. I ventured out, ready to immerse myself in local experiences, and what a day it turned out to be! From a quirky duck farm to savory vegan dishes and a taste of the local nightlife, it was a day filled with laughter, good food, and new friends.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. Finding vegan options while traveling can sometimes be a challenge, but Phong Nha Vegan made it incredibly easy. The friendly staff and the tasty food, especially the iced coconut coffee, were the perfect start. I enjoyed a flavorful bowl of pho, packed with fresh vegetables and tofu. It's always a pleasure to find a place that caters so well to plant-based diets, and this spot definitely earned a place on my list of favorite vegan eateries.

With a satisfied stomach, I headed to my main destination for the morning: The Duck Stop. I had heard so much about this place, a quirky farm where you can interact with ducks in the most unusual ways. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I was intrigued by this family-run farm that started as a simple attraction and evolved into a unique experience for travelers.

The Duck Stop is located a bit outside Phong Nha Town. Since I hadn't rented a motorbike, I decided to rent a bicycle and enjoy the scenic ride. The views of Quang Binh province are indeed some of the best in Vietnam, and the leisurely pace allowed me to soak it all in. The ride itself was an adventure, passing through small villages and alongside rice paddies.

Arriving at The Duck Stop, I was immediately greeted by the lively atmosphere. The farm is home to over 120 ducks, and they are quite the characters. The highlight of my visit was, without a doubt, the duck massage. I sat down, and dozens of ducks eagerly nibbled at my hands, creating a ticklish sensation that had me laughing uncontrollably. It was such a bizarre but fun experience, and definitely a highlight of my trip so far.

The Duck Stop is more than just a tourist attraction; it's a glimpse into rural Vietnamese life and a testament to the ingenuity of local farmers.

After the duck massage, I indulged in a Vietnamese pancake (bánh xèo). It was delicious, and I savored every bite while watching the ducks waddle around. The Duck Stop is not just about the ducks; it’s about experiencing the local culture and enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

For lunch, I opted for Lotus Restaurant - Phong Nha. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. I enjoyed a refreshing mango salad and some spring rolls, a perfect light meal after a morning of adventure. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, and the staff were very welcoming.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore the area a bit more and stumbled upon the Phong Nha Monkey Bridge. It’s a charming wooden bridge that provides a rustic crossing over the river. It was the perfect spot for some photos and a chance to see the local villages. The bridge is located near The Duck Stop, making it a convenient stop for those exploring the area.

As evening approached, I made my way to Dubai Pub Phong Nha for a taste of the local nightlife. This cozy bar has a vibrant atmosphere and offers a mix of local and international drinks. I enjoyed a refreshing cocktail and chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences. The staff were friendly and attentive, making it a great place to unwind after a busy day. The pub often hosts live music, adding to the lively atmosphere.

For dinner, I chose The Rice House, drawn in by its reputation for delicious vegan options. I ordered the tofu and eggplant claypot, and it was absolutely divine. The flavors were rich and the tofu was perfectly cooked. It was a satisfying end to a day of culinary exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I am reminded of why I love solo travel so much. It allows me the freedom to explore at my own pace, to stumble upon hidden gems, and to connect with locals in a meaningful way. Today was a perfect example of that, a day filled with unexpected adventures and delightful surprises.

The weather in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in November is pleasantly warm and breezy, with temperatures ranging from 68°F to 79°F (20°C to 26°C). It’s the dry season, making it perfect for outdoor activities. However, there is still a chance of rain, so it’s always good to be prepared.

Tomorrow, I am planning to visit Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure. It’s another opportunity to connect with nature and see the local wildlife. I am also looking forward to trying some local specialties at ARTIST'S ZONE for breakfast, The Villas Restaurant for lunch and Phong Nha Family Restaurant for dinner. And maybe I'll find some unique souvenirs at Đặc sản, cafe Hương Rừng.

As I settle in for the night, I am grateful for the experiences of the day. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park continues to surprise and delight me, and I am excited for what tomorrow will bring.

The Duck Stop, with its quirky charm, is a must-visit for anyone looking for a unique and playful experience. The vegan food scene in Phong Nha is thriving, with plenty of options for plant-based eaters. And the local nightlife, with its friendly atmosphere, is the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

As I always say, travel is not just about seeing new places; it’s about experiencing new things and creating lasting memories. Today was a testament to that, a day that I will cherish for a long time.

And with that, I bid you goodnight from Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Until tomorrow, happy travels!
