Encountering Wildlife and Authentic Tastes

Today was a blend of nature's wonders and the comforting flavors of Vietnamese cuisine. It's always a joy to experience the local culture through its food, and today was no exception. The weather in Phong Nha in November is pleasantly warm, with a high of 79°F (26°C) and a low of 69°F (21°C), making it ideal for outdoor activities. The day started with a hearty breakfast, followed by a visit to a unique wildlife enclosure, and ended with a delightful dinner at a local family restaurant. I find that these simple days often offer the most profound connections to a place.

My day began at ARTIST'S ZONE, a local spot known for its Vietnamese breakfast. It's a cozy place where you can feel the pulse of the town. I opted for a traditional *pho*, the flavorful broth and fresh herbs a perfect start to the day. It reminded me of the comforting soups Fatou makes back in Bielefeld, though hers always have a distinctly Gambian twist. Fuelled up, I set off for the Núi Đôi Semiwild Enclosure, eager to see the local wildlife.

The enclosure is a unique concept, a place where animals are gradually readjusted to their natural habitat before being released into the wild. As a mechanical engineer, I appreciate the thought and care that goes into creating such a space, ensuring the animals' well-being and preparing them for life in the jungle. The park has been temporarily closed in the past due to COVID-19. Walking along the trails, I kept my eyes peeled, hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the residents. Although I only saw monkeys from a distance, it was heartening to know that they were living in a protected environment. The enclosure offers a range of outdoor activities, including hiking and exploring the jungle. The paths were a bit overgrown in places, and the mosquitoes were quite persistent, a reminder to pack that rain jacket and portable charger next time, but the tranquility of the forest was worth it.

The best journeys are those that lead you to unexpected discoveries, both within yourself and in the world around you.

Lunch was at The Villas Restaurant, nestled along the Son River. The restaurant embraces a philosophy of simplicity and rustic elegance, offering a menu that highlights quality over quantity. I chose a light and refreshing salad with local fish, enjoying the beautiful river views as I ate. It was a peaceful setting, a perfect spot to reflect on the morning's adventures. I am reminded of our wedding day where Fatou and I wanted a simple yet elegant celebration.

After lunch, I decided to explore the local shops and stumbled upon Đặc sản, cafe Hương Rừng. It was a great place to pick up some local coffee and snacks. As someone who values sustainable living, I appreciated the opportunity to support local businesses and sample regional products. It also gave me a chance to interact with the locals, always a highlight of my travels.

For dinner, I chose Phong Nha Family Restaurant, drawn in by its reputation for authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant offers a wide range of fast food and sit-down options at reasonable prices. It's the kind of place where you instantly feel like part of the family. I ordered stir-fried noodles with tofu and vegetables, a flavorful and satisfying dish. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. As I savored my meal, I couldn't help but think of Fatou and Ebrima. I know they would have loved this place.

As the day draws to a close, I find myself already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure. The itinerary includes a visit to the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park itself. I plan to have breakfast at Bamboo Chopsticks, lunch at Son Doong Restaurant, and dinner at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. I might even check out Cây Bàng Quán - Big Tree Restaurant for a drink in the evening. It's going to be another day of exploration and discovery, and I can't wait to see what Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has in store.

It's evenings like these, filled with simple joys and genuine connections, that make traveling so rewarding. Reflecting on the day, I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful part of Vietnam, to experience its wildlife, and to savor its authentic flavors. It reinforces my belief that the most memorable travel experiences are often found in the simplest of moments.
