First Impressions of Yakushima

The adventure begins! Arriving in Yakushima felt like stepping into a different world, a serene escape far removed from the bustling streets of Leipzig. The air is fresh, carrying the scent of cedar and sea, a welcome change from the familiar urban aromas. I'm eager to explore this island, to delve into its history, and to connect with its unique culture.

My journey to Yakushima was smooth, though the multiple flights and ferry ride from Leipzig left me a bit weary. The initial leg from Leipzig to Tokyo was uneventful, but the domestic flight to Kagoshima offered stunning views of the Japanese archipelago. From Kagoshima, the ferry ride to Yakushima was a scenic prelude to the island's natural beauty. As the ferry approached the island, I could see the lush, green mountains rising majestically from the sea, hinting at the adventures to come. I chose to travel solo on this trip, and I am looking forward to a period of solitude, reflection and photographic exploration.

My first order of business after arriving was to grab a bite at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. I was famished! Opting for a quick breakfast there seemed like the perfect way to start immersing myself in the local culture. The restaurant had an old-school vibe, reminiscent of traditional soba shops. I purchased a meal ticket at the counter and ordered a simple udon dish. It was simple, yet satisfying, and the perfect fuel for my day of exploration. The prices were a bit steep, but it was all part of the airport experience.

With renewed energy, I set off to explore the island, beginning with a visit to the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center.

To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.

The Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center was my first stop. It provided a comprehensive introduction to the island's unique ecosystem and its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The exhibits detailed the diverse flora and fauna of Yakushima, with visual representations showing how the altitude affects the plants. I was particularly impressed by the 3D map of the national park terrain, which gave me a sense of the island's topography. The center also highlighted the importance of preserving the local ecosystem and the etiquette for hiking the mountain trails. It was fascinating to learn about the conservation efforts and the measures being taken to minimize environmental impact.

Next on my list was the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore. This museum offered a deep dive into the island's cultural heritage, showcasing artifacts from the Jomon period to the present day. I was intrigued by the exhibits displaying wood and wicker folk tools, handicrafts, and festival items. The museum also featured a reconstruction of a rural house where roof tiles were made, providing a glimpse into the traditional way of life on the island. Although the signs were primarily in Japanese, I was provided with an English pamphlet that helped me understand the exhibits. The museum visit gave me a profound appreciation for the history and traditions of the Yakushima people.

After immersing myself in history and culture, I decided to explore the local culinary scene. For lunch, I ventured to the Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. This restaurant offered a unique dining experience, combining local flavors with a modern twist. The menu featured a variety of dishes, including fresh seafood and local specialties. I opted for a set lunch that included grilled flying fish, a Yakushima delicacy. The fish was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the meal was a delightful introduction to the island's cuisine. The restaurant itself had a charming ambiance, with artwork displayed on the walls, adding to the overall experience.

In the late afternoon, I strolled through the Yakushima Market, eager to experience the local commerce. The market was bustling with activity, vendors selling fresh produce, local crafts, and souvenirs. I purchased some local citrus fruits, including Ponkan and Tankan oranges, which are unique to Yakushima. The vibrant colors and fragrant aromas of the market were a feast for the senses. I also picked up a few small souvenirs for Hans and Kati, a reminder of my adventures on this enchanting island.

As evening approached, I made my way to DINING CAFE BAR SLOW for dinner. This cozy restaurant offered a relaxed atmosphere and a diverse menu featuring salads, soups, pasta, burgers, and seafood. I chose a seafood pasta dish, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The restaurant also offered a good forest view from the back, and I enjoyed sitting on the terrace, savoring my meal while taking in the serene surroundings.

The blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and culinary delights has already captivated me. Tomorrow, I plan to hike through the Shiratani Unsui Gorge and visit Wilson's Stump, eager to delve deeper into the ancient forests of Yakushima. I am also planning on having breakfast at Il Mare , and trying the local cuisine at Katagiri Flying Fish Restaurant and At Pesca. I am also looking forward to visiting Cafe&Bar RainTree.

As I settle into my guesthouse for the night, I feel a sense of anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. Yakushima has already exceeded my expectations, and I am excited to see what else this magical island has in store. The solitude of traveling solo allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to connect with nature, and to reflect on my journey. I am eager to share my discoveries with you, my readers, as I continue to explore the ancient forests of Yakushima.

The air is crisp, and the sounds of the forest lull me into a peaceful sleep, dreaming of the ancient cedars and hidden trails that await me tomorrow. Goodnight from Yakushima!
