Day 10: Shrines, Soba, and Serenity: Discovering Yakushima's Hidden Gems
Exploring Yakushima's cultural and culinary treasures: ancient shrines, local eateries, and tranquil moments in a solo adventure.
A Day of Shrines and Culinary Delights
Today was a day of serene discoveries and delightful indulgences here in Yakushima. Leaving behind the well-trodden paths for a moment, I decided to delve into the island's spiritual side and sample some of its local flavors. It’s amazing how much a change of pace can enrich an experience, offering new perspectives and a deeper connection to a place.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It’s funny, I usually try to avoid airport food, but this place had a certain old-school charm that I couldn’t resist. I purchased my meal ticket at the souvenir shop, a system that reminded me of my student days in Leipzig. The udon was simple but satisfying, providing the perfect fuel for the day's adventures. It’s definitely a convenient spot to grab a bite, especially if you're flying in or out of Yakushima.

With a full stomach, I set off to explore some of Yakushima's lesser-known shrines, starting with Yaku-jinja. Nestled in Miyanoura, it was easy to find, and steeped in history. Established in 806 A.D., it has served as a guardian for both Yakushima and Tanegashima islands. The shrine is dedicated to “Amatsuhikohohodeminomikoto” or “Yamasachihiko” and is considered one of the most prestigious in the Kagoshima Prefecture. I was particularly fascinated by the Kongorikishi statues, Agyo and Ungyo, dating back to the Tenpo era. It was a peaceful place, perfect for a moment of reflection. It's interesting to see how mountain worship is reflected in the culture here, with the inner shrine located at the summit of Mt. Miyanoura.

Next on my list was Yahazudake Shrine. This shrine was a bit more off the beaten path, located on Cape Yahazu in Isso. The bright red torii gate against the backdrop of a vast cave was a sight to behold. It’s believed to be home to the gods of fishing and marriage. The walk to the shrine was an adventure in itself, with stunning views of the coastline. I can see why it's considered a sacred oasis; the tranquility was palpable. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore and the gentle breeze rustling through the trees created a soothing symphony.

The true beauty of Yakushima lies not just in its famed forests, but in the quiet corners where ancient traditions and natural serenity intertwine.
For lunch, I ventured to hiyoriya, a small restaurant located about 2km north of the Yakushima Airport. It’s a bit tricky to find, as it looks like a regular house, but it was well worth the effort. Hiyoriya is known for its organic and mostly vegetarian cuisine. I opted for the set meal, which featured a variety of beautifully presented dishes. Fresh tofu, miso soup, brown rice, and organic vegetables – each bite was a burst of flavor. It was a truly wholesome and satisfying meal. It’s wonderful to see a place so committed to using local, seasonal ingredients.

As the day wound down, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Matsutake, a popular noodle restaurant in the southwest of Yakushima. It’s a bit of a trek to get there, but the locals rave about it. The restaurant itself is in an old traditional Japanese building, adding to its charm. I ordered the soba noodles with tempura. The noodles were thin and delicious, and the tempura was perfectly crispy. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring. The owner runs the place on his own, so the pace is slower, but that just adds to the relaxed atmosphere.

To cap off the evening, I stopped by Cafe&Bar RainTree. I don’t usually go to bars alone, but I was intrigued by the karaoke. It was a fun, lively spot, and I even managed to sing a few Estonian songs. It's a great place to unwind and enjoy the local vibe.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am reminded of how much this island has to offer. While the ancient cedar forests are undoubtedly the main draw, the shrines and local eateries provide a glimpse into Yakushima's soul. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Daio Sugi and Nidai Ōsugi, continuing my exploration of the island's magnificent trees. I might also check out YAKUSHIMA BLESS for some local crafts. For now, I'm content with the memories of today, the taste of soba, and the echoes of karaoke filling my mind.
Yakushima continues to surprise and delight, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. This solo journey is proving to be exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, explore new cultures, and discover hidden gems along the way. And who knows, maybe I’ll even find a karaoke partner tomorrow night!
Before I turn in for the night, I must remember to buy insect repellent tomorrow. I forgot to pack it, and the mosquitos are having a feast on me!
Good night from Yakushima!
