Whispers of the Island

Today was a gentle dance between nature and culture, a serene exploration of Yakushima's quieter corners. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the unexpected moments of peace and beauty that travel unveils. Not every day needs to be a grand adventure; sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simple act of wandering and observing.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Aqua Cafe. The cafe's stylish interior was a pleasant surprise, a modern space amidst Yakushima's natural landscape. I savored a cup of their expertly brewed coffee while planning my itinerary for the day. It was the perfect way to start a day dedicated to exploring the island's more subtle charms.

First on the agenda was Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park. Located in the small village of Shitoko, the park is home to a collection of impressive banyan trees, known as 'gajumaru' in Japanese. As I wandered through the shady paths, I was struck by the trees' intricate root systems, which seemed to defy gravity as they reached for the sky. The air was thick with humidity, and the sounds of cicadas filled the air, creating a symphony of nature. I took the longer 15-minute walking course, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the unique beauty of the banyan trees. It was a small park, but it offered a tranquil escape from the midday sun.

Leaving the park, I headed towards the Yakushima Botanic Gardens, eager to immerse myself in the island's diverse plant life. The gardens are home to an extensive collection of indigenous species, showcasing the incredible biodiversity of Yakushima. I wandered through the meticulously curated pathways, admiring the towering trees and delicate flowers. The informative signage provided insights into the ecological significance of the various species, making the experience both educational and visually stunning. I was particularly fascinated by the azaleas, orchids and mosses.

After immersing myself in the serene atmosphere of the Botanic Gardens, it was time for lunch. I made my way to Yakushima Gallery Restaurant, drawn in by its promise of authentic Japanese cuisine. The restaurant didn't disappoint. I savored a delicious meal of local specialties, each dish a testament to the island's rich culinary heritage.

With my appetite satisfied, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Gallery KIANU. Located in the Miyanoura Port Ferry Terminal, this charming shop offers a curated selection of local pottery and artisanal crafts. As someone who appreciates unique, handcrafted items, I was immediately drawn to the gallery's collection. I spent a pleasant hour browsing the displays, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans. I ended up purchasing a delicate piece of pottery, a memento of my time on Yakushima that I know will look lovely in our Leipzig home.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I treated myself to dinner at Il Mare, an Italian restaurant located near the airport. While I typically seek out local cuisine when traveling, I was intrigued by the idea of Italian food made with local Yakushima ingredients. The restaurant lived up to its promise, serving up delicious pasta and pizza dishes with a unique island twist. It was a delightful culinary experience, a testament to the versatility of Yakushima's local produce. I must remember to tell Hans about this place, as I know he would enjoy the blend of Italian flavors and local ingredients.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the simple pleasures I had experienced. From the tranquil beauty of Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park to the culinary delights of Yakushima Gallery Restaurant and Il Mare, today had been a gentle reminder of the beauty that can be found in slowing down and appreciating the small things.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Yaku-jinja and Yahazudake Shrine, continuing my exploration of Yakushima's cultural and spiritual side. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Cafe&Bar RainTree in the evening, perhaps sharing stories with fellow travelers [if not, I will enjoy the solitude].

Even though I'm traveling solo, I feel a sense of connection to this island and its people. It's a feeling I'll carry with me long after I leave. I wonder if Kati would enjoy a trip here, perhaps next summer, when she's finished her first year at university. It would be a lovely way for us to reconnect as mother and daughter, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. I must remember to suggest it to her when I return to Leipzig.

The insect repellent I forgot to pack is starting to become a real problem. I will need to find a shop that sells some tomorrow.
