Day 3: A Day of Cultural Immersion and Culinary Delights in Hoi An
Explore Hoi An's rich heritage with visits to museums and family chapels, complemented by delicious local cuisine and cocktails.
Stepping Back in Time in Hoi An
Today was a day of diving deep into the cultural heart of Hoi An. Hans and I set out to explore the town's history and traditions, and, of course, to indulge in its famed cuisine. It's amazing how much you can learn and experience in just one day!
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Nhan's Kitchen. I opted for a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, while Hans, ever the adventurous one, tried something completely new. Fuelled up, we were ready to explore.

Museum of Folk Culture: A Glimpse into the Past
Our first stop was the Museum of Folk Culture. Housed in what was once a 150-year-old Chinese trading house, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of the local people. It’s amazing how well-preserved the building is, offering a peek into traditional Hoi An architecture.

The museum is home to a collection of artifacts categorized into folk visual arts, folk performing arts, traditional craft villages, and folk activities. Wandering through the exhibits, I felt a profound connection to the people who shaped this town. From agricultural tools to intricate artwork, each item told a story of resilience, creativity, and community. Hans was particularly impressed by the collection of agricultural and fishing-related items, intricate machines suited to the local environment.
The essence of a town lies not just in its buildings, but in the stories of its people and the traditions they uphold.
Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel: Honoring Ancestry
Next on our itinerary was the Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel. Tucked away in a quiet alley, this ancestral home offered a serene escape from the bustling streets. The chapel is dedicated to the Nguyen Tuong family, a family known for its scholarly achievements and contributions to Vietnamese literature.

Built in 1806, the chapel is a beautiful example of traditional Vietnamese architecture. Inside, we found intricate wood carvings and stunning architectural details. The calm atmosphere invited us to explore the altars and pay our respects to the ancestors. It was interesting to learn about Nguyen Tuong Van, who served as Minister of War under the Nguyen Dynasty. The chapel also preserves a collection of documents, including genealogy books dating back to the 18th and 20th centuries.
Lunch at Pho Xua: A Taste of Authentic Hoi An
By lunchtime, we were ready to refuel, and Pho Xua was the perfect choice. This small restaurant is known for its traditional Pho, and it certainly didn't disappoint. I savored every spoonful of the flavorful broth, tender beef, and fresh herbs. Hans tried the banh xeo, a crispy pancake filled with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts. The flavors were perfectly balanced, a true taste of Hoi An.

Dinner at Vy's Market Restaurant: A Culinary Wonderland
As evening approached, we made our way to Vy's Market Restaurant. This isn't just a restaurant; it's a culinary experience. Inspired by Hoi An's street food markets, Vy's Market offers a wide array of Vietnamese dishes. The restaurant has live cooking stations and a market-style setup.

We decided to share a variety of dishes, from noodles to grilled meats and seafood. The open-air design, with its wooden decor and colorful lanterns, created a warm and inviting atmosphere. It was a feast for the senses, and we left feeling completely satisfied.
I remember when Kati was small, she was very picky with food. I wish I had a place like Vy's Market Restaurant back then, it would have made our life so much easier!
KoFi Hoi An - Cocktail bar: A Nightcap in a Hidden Gem
To cap off our day, we ventured into a small alley and found KoFi Hoi An - Cocktail bar. This charming bar is a hidden gem, tucked away from the tourist crowds. The atmosphere was cozy and artsy, and the cocktails were expertly crafted. Hans enjoyed a Negroni, while I savored a Whiskey Sour.

The bar is run by a friendly family, and we felt right at home. It was the perfect place to unwind and reflect on our day. Sipping our drinks, we enjoyed the unique view of the city's rooftops. It was a magical end to a magical day.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow, we plan to continue our exploration of Hoi An's historic houses, visiting the Old House of Tan Ky and Diep Dong Nguyen House. I am excited to see more of the traditional architecture and learn about the families who once lived there. We also have reservations for breakfast at Little Faifo Restaurant, lunch at Cao Cao Grasshopper, and dinner at Red Gecko Restaurant. And, of course, I am looking forward to a bit of shopping at Lotus Leaf Fine Arts & Jewellery.
As I write this, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences of today. Hoi An is a town that truly captivates the senses and nourishes the soul. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
It's always a pleasure to travel with Hans, he makes every trip more special. I am so lucky to have him in my life.
