Day 9: A Day of Discovery: Culture, Craft, and Canyon Views
Exploring Fish River Canyon's culture and landscapes. From pottery to canyon views, discover Namibia's hidden gems with family.
Finding Beauty in the Details
Today was a day of delightful discoveries, a blend of cultural immersion and natural beauty that truly enriched our Fish River Canyon experience. It wasn't about grand gestures or adrenaline-pumping adventures, but rather about appreciating the small, authentic moments that make a journey memorable. From handcrafted pottery to breathtaking canyon vistas, Namibia continued to reveal its hidden gems, and I felt a deeper connection to this land with every passing hour.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fish River Lodge. The buffet was a delightful spread of Namibian flavors, and I savored every bite while enjoying the panoramic views of the canyon. David, as usual, was engrossed in a local newspaper, pointing out interesting articles about Namibian history and politics. Aina, ever the early bird, was already snapping photos of the sunrise, capturing the play of light on the canyon walls. The lodge is perched right on the canyon rim, and it’s truly a sight to behold. The blend of unique décor and exceptional service really made our morning special.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the area. Our first stop was Creative Brands Namibia/Stofpad Pottery in Rosh Pinah. I was particularly excited about this, as I've always admired the artistry and craftsmanship of Namibian artisans. The drive to Rosh Pinah was scenic, with vast open landscapes stretching as far as the eye could see. We even saw a couple of springbok grazing peacefully along the roadside. I did forget insect repellent and a portable phone charger, but thankfully David had a spare charger in the car.
Arriving at Creative Brands, we were immediately captivated by the vibrant display of pottery and other handcrafted items. The studio was a fusion of art and business, showcasing the exceptional talent of local artists. I was particularly drawn to a set of hand-painted bowls, each one unique and reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Namibia. Aina, with her keen eye for design, spent ages admiring the intricate details of the pottery, while David chatted with the owner about the challenges and rewards of running a small business in Namibia. We learned that Creative Brands offers workshops where visitors can create their own pottery, which sounds like a wonderful experience for another time.

“Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in the grand landscapes, but in the small, human touches that connect us to a place and its people.”
After our delightful pottery experience, it was time for lunch. We drove to Canyon Lodge, Gondwana Collection Namibia, where we enjoyed a delicious meal. The lodge is nestled among rocky hills and offers a tranquil escape. The food was excellent, and we especially enjoyed the traditional Namibian dishes. The staff were incredibly friendly and hospitable, making us feel right at home.

Following lunch, we decided to visit Canyon Village, Gondwana Collection Namibia. The village is designed in a horseshoe shape, with stone-and-thatch chalets surrounding a central area adorned with quiver trees and bougainvillea. The murals depicting the history of southern Namibia added a touch of warmth and intrigue to the lodge. We took a leisurely walk through the village, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the unique architecture. Aina was particularly fascinated by the quiver trees, which she learned are native to this region and have adapted to the harsh desert climate. The Village has an earthy appeal that mirrors the landscape of southern Namibia.

In the late afternoon, we embarked on a scenic drive to fully appreciate the Fish River Canyon. The views were simply breathtaking, especially as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the canyon walls. We stopped at several viewpoints, each offering a unique perspective of this geological wonder. David, with his historical knowledge, explained how the canyon was formed over millions of years by the erosive power of the Fish River. Aina, meanwhile, was busy capturing the stunning landscapes with her camera, determined to preserve these memories forever.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to the Naute Kristall Cellar and Distillery for dinner. This was an experience I had been eagerly anticipating, as I had heard so much about their handcrafted spirits. The distillery is located near date plantations and vineyards, creating a little oasis in the dry landscape of southern Namibia. We enjoyed a delicious meal, sampling some of their award-winning spirits and learning about the distillation process. The owners, Michael and Kathrin Weder, were incredibly passionate about their craft, and their enthusiasm was infectious.

The Naute Kristall Cellar has established itself as a destination with fine spirits and the best coffee. They are known for continuous innovation, training, and a farm-to-bottle philosophy. The tasting included gin, gin liqueur, and five fine spirits. We also sampled the white wines and enjoyed a light lunch of biltong, cheese, salad, and quiche. For dessert, we indulged in fresh date muffins.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that it was the simple moments – the laughter shared with family, the stories exchanged with locals, the appreciation of handcrafted art, and the awe-inspiring beauty of the Fish River Canyon – that made this day so special. It was a reminder that travel is not just about ticking off destinations on a list, but about immersing oneself in the culture, connecting with the people, and appreciating the natural wonders of our world.
Tomorrow, we are planning to hike the Fishriver Hiking Trail and visit the Canyon Lodge. I am looking forward to experiencing the canyon from a different perspective and immersing ourselves in its rugged beauty. We’ll also stop by Dessert Rose for a refreshing drink.
As I sit here, writing this blog post under the vast Namibian sky, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible journey and the opportunity to share it with my loved ones. Namibia, you have captured my heart, and I know that I will carry these memories with me forever.

The daytime temperature was around 22°C, but it dropped to about 8°C at night. The lodge provided a warm and comfortable haven after a day of exploring. The clear skies made for excellent stargazing, and we spent some time admiring the constellations before turning in for the night.
