Echoes of the Past, Paths of the Present

Today in Fish River Canyon, we walked where history whispers and nature shouts. It was a day of reflection and adventure, a blend of somber remembrance and exhilarating exploration. With David and Aina by my side, I felt a deep connection to this land, a land that holds stories in its very stones.

Our day began, as many do here, with a hearty breakfast at the Canyon Roadhouse, Gondwana Collection Namibia. The Roadhouse itself is quite the sight! It feels like stepping back in time, with vintage cars and quirky decor that had Aina snapping photos at every turn. The breakfast was just what we needed to fuel our day: a mix of continental options, with some good old Full English available as well. I opted for the vegetarian option, while David, of course, went for the full works. Aina enjoyed the buffet, making sure to sample a bit of everything.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the canyon itself. Our first stop was the Memorial Plaques. These plaques stand as silent witnesses to the past, each one telling a story of resilience, loss, and remembrance. As an immigration advisor, I often encounter stories of people who have overcome incredible hardships, and standing there, reading those inscriptions, I felt a profound connection to the human spirit. David, with his background as a history teacher, provided valuable context, sharing insights into the historical events that shaped this landscape. Aina, ever curious, asked thoughtful questions, prompting us to delve deeper into the narratives behind each plaque.

It's a humbling experience to stand there, surrounded by the vastness of the canyon, and reflect on the lives of those who came before us. The plaques themselves are located near Hobas, a campsite that serves as a starting point for many hikers. It’s a stark reminder of the passage of time and the enduring power of memory.

From the Memorial Plaques, we ventured towards Bandage Pass, a particularly scenic and challenging section of the canyon. The hike to Bandage Pass was invigorating, to say the least. The trail wound its way through rugged terrain, with each turn revealing breathtaking vistas of the canyon. The landscape was dramatic, with towering cliffs and mesmerizing colors of the desert.

The canyon is a place where you can truly connect with nature and with yourself.

The midday sun was intense, so we made sure to apply plenty of sunscreen and stay hydrated. I was glad I had remembered to pack our reusable water bottles, though I did kick myself for forgetting the insect repellent. It seems the local insects were quite fond of us, particularly around the Bandage Pass area! Bandage Pass is known for its unique rock formations and stunning views. The name itself conjures images of adventure and perhaps a few scrapes along the way. The pass offers a challenging but rewarding hike, with panoramic views that stretch as far as the eye can see.

As we hiked, we kept an eye out for local flora and fauna. Although we didn't spot any of the larger wildlife, we did see several interesting birds and lizards darting among the rocks. The canyon is a haven for biodiversity, and it's fascinating to observe the resilience of life in such a harsh environment.

Lunch was a simple affair: sandwiches and fruit enjoyed amidst the grandeur of the canyon. We found a shady spot to rest and refuel before continuing our trek. As we ate, we discussed the history of the canyon, the forces that shaped it over millions of years. David, with his encyclopedic knowledge of history, shared fascinating facts about the geological processes that created this natural wonder.

After lunch, we continued our hike towards the designated endpoint for the day. The trail became even more challenging, with steep inclines and loose gravel underfoot. I was grateful for my hiking boots, which provided much-needed support and traction. Aina, with her youthful energy, bounded ahead, while David and I took a more measured pace. We encouraged each other, sharing stories and laughter along the way. It's moments like these that make family travel so special: the shared experiences, the challenges overcome together, and the memories created that will last a lifetime.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Epata restaurant and accommodation for dinner. Located in Karasburg, it was a bit of a drive, but well worth it. The restaurant offers a diverse menu showcasing traditional Namibian dishes with contemporary twists. I decided to try the local game, while David opted for a hearty stew. Aina, always up for trying new things, ordered a vegetarian curry. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.

After dinner, we enjoyed a nightcap at Ai Ais Reception and Bar. It was the perfect way to end a long but fulfilling day. Sipping on a local beer, we reminisced about our adventures, sharing our favorite moments and laughing at our misadventures. The stars shone brightly overhead, casting a magical glow on the canyon.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible landscape with my family, gratitude for the chance to connect with the history and culture of Namibia, and gratitude for the simple joys of life: good food, good company, and breathtaking scenery. Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the Fish River Canyon, visiting the Fish River Canyon and Canyon Village, Gondwana Collection Namibia. We'll have breakfast at Fish River Lodge, and will have lunch at Canyon Lodge, Gondwana Collection Namibia. In the evening, we will dine at Naute Kristall Cellar and Distillery and will visit Creative Brands Namibia/Stofpad Pottery. I can't wait to see what adventures await us!
