Exploring the Majestic Fish River Canyon with Family
Day 1: First Glimpses of a Namibian Giant: Fish River Canyon Beckons
Embark on our Namibian adventure! Day 1 unveils the majestic Fish River Canyon, offering stunning viewpoints and culinary delights.
The Canyon's Embrace
After a long journey from London, touching down in Windhoek and then driving south, the anticipation had been building for months. Finally, we arrived at the Fish River Canyon, a place that holds a special significance for me, a return to the land of my birth with my family. This trip is not just a vacation; it's a homecoming, a chance for David and Aina to connect with my roots. The vast landscapes and the warm, earthy tones of Namibia are already working their magic, and I can't wait to share every moment with you.
The drive itself was an experience. The stark beauty of the Namibian landscape unfolded before us, mile after mile of open space, punctuated by the occasional quiver tree standing sentinel against the horizon. David, ever the history enthusiast, peppered us with facts about the region, while Aina, with her keen eye for photography, captured the stunning vistas. It felt good to be back on Namibian soil. The air is different here, drier, crisper, and carrying the scent of the earth. It’s a scent that speaks of resilience and a deep connection to the land. The temperature in June is perfect, with highs around 22°C during the day and dropping to about 8°C at night.
Our first stop was the Fish River Canyon Viewpoint. As we approached the rim, the sheer scale of the canyon took my breath away. It’s hard to describe the feeling of standing on the edge of such a geological marvel, a gash in the earth carved over millennia. The canyon stretches for miles, a labyrinth of rock and shadow, painted in hues of ochre, rust, and deep brown. I could see why it’s known as Africa’s largest canyon and the second largest in the world.
The Fish River Canyon is more than just a landscape; it's a testament to the enduring power of nature and a reminder of the ancient stories etched into the earth.
David and Aina were equally awestruck. David, with his teacher's eye, was fascinated by the geological formations, pointing out the different layers of rock and explaining how the canyon was formed. Aina, meanwhile, was in her element, snapping photos from every angle, trying to capture the immensity of the scene. I remember when I first left Omaruru, I never thought I would return, let alone with my family in tow. It fills me with a sense of peace, being able to show them this magnificent place.
From there, we ventured to Hiker's Viewpoint, just a few kilometers north of the main viewpoint. As the name suggests, this spot offers a panoramic view of the canyon, giving a sense of the sheer size of it. From this vantage point, we could see the Fish River snaking its way through the canyon floor, a thin ribbon of green against the rugged landscape. The sun was beginning to dip towards the horizon, casting long shadows and painting the canyon walls in fiery hues. The viewpoint marks the start of the Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail, one of the most popular treks in Southern Africa, but only open to hikers between May and September. Perhaps one day, I'll be fit enough to attempt it!

After a morning of exploration, our stomachs started to rumble, so we headed to Canyon Roadhouse, Gondwana Collection Namibia for breakfast. The Roadhouse is part of the Gondwana Collection Namibia, and it is designed to resemble an old farm with motor memorabilia. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time, with vintage petrol pumps, old car parts, and quirky decorations adorning the walls. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff greeted us with genuine Namibian hospitality. We sat down at a table amidst this nostalgic décor and ordered a hearty breakfast. I had a traditional Namibian breakfast of mielie-pap (maize porridge) with grilled boerewors (sausage) and a fried egg. David opted for a full English breakfast, while Aina chose a lighter option of fresh fruit and yogurt. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous, setting us up perfectly for the day ahead.

For lunch, we decided to try Canyon Village, Gondwana Collection Namibia, another Gondwana Collection property. The village is set amongst rocky hills and quiver trees, with stone-and-thatch chalets arranged around a central area. It has an earthy charm that reflects the Namibian landscape. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch of traditional Namibian cuisine, savoring the flavors of home. I had a delicious potjiekos, a traditional stew cooked in a three-legged cast-iron pot over an open fire. David tried the game steak, while Aina opted for a vegetarian dish of butternut squash and spinach. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

Before dinner, Aina was keen to do some shopping, so we popped into the shop at Canyon Village, Gondwana Collection Namibia. The shop was well-stocked with local crafts, souvenirs, and essentials. Aina found a beautiful Herero doll to add to her collection, while David picked up a book on Namibian history. I bought a few postcards to send to friends back in London, sharing our adventures with them. I know my friend, Fatima, will be so jealous! She has always wanted to visit Namibia.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Fish River Lodge for dinner. The lodge is perched on the edge of the canyon and is known for its stunning views. The setting was simply breathtaking, with the canyon bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. We sat down at a table overlooking the canyon and ordered our meals. The food was exquisite, a fusion of Namibian and international flavors. I had the oryx carpaccio for starters, followed by the pan-fried kingklip (a local fish) for my main course. David chose the springbok loin, while Aina had the vegetarian pasta dish. The service was impeccable, and the staff were attentive without being intrusive.

After dinner, we lingered on the terrace, sipping Amarula liqueur and gazing at the stars. The night sky in Namibia is something special, unpolluted by city lights, revealing a tapestry of stars that stretches to infinity. David, with his knowledge of astronomy, pointed out the constellations, telling stories of gods and heroes. Aina, meanwhile, was busy capturing the celestial display with her camera. I felt a sense of contentment, surrounded by my family, in this beautiful and ancient land.
The Fish River Canyon has already exceeded my expectations. Its vastness, its beauty, and its sense of timelessness have captivated us all. It is a place that demands respect, a place that humbles you with its scale and its history. As I lay in my tent tonight, listening to the sounds of the African bush, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to reconnect with my roots and to share this extraordinary experience with my family. Tomorrow, we plan to do some hiking along the Fishriver Hiking Trail and visit the Sulphur Springs. I can't wait to see what adventures await us.
As we prepare for our second day, I am filled with excitement for what lies ahead. It's a privilege to share this journey with you all, and I hope you'll continue to follow along as we delve deeper into the heart of Namibia.
Join us on a family adventure exploring the breathtaking Fish River Canyon, immersing in nature, and reconnecting with Namibian heritage.
