A Day of Discovery in the Canyon

Today was an immersion into the raw beauty and surprising delights of Fish River Canyon. It’s hard to believe this is only day two of our family adventure, as we packed so much into a single day. From challenging hikes to soothing springs and a taste of local ingenuity, Namibia continues to captivate us.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Canyon Lodge. David and Aina enjoyed a full English breakfast, while I opted for the continental spread, savoring the fresh fruit and homemade bread. It’s amazing how a good meal can set the tone for the day, especially when you know you're about to embark on a challenging hike. The lodge itself is nestled amongst granite boulders, with natural rocks incorporated into the rooms. It’s a charming place, and the staff are incredibly welcoming.

Fueled and ready, we set off to tackle a portion of the famed Fish River Hiking Trail. We didn't attempt the full five-day trek, of course; that's a challenge for another time, perhaps when Aina is a little older. Instead, we opted for a shorter loop that would give us a taste of the canyon's grandeur. The air was crisp and cool, perfect for hiking, and the landscape was simply breathtaking. The sheer scale of the canyon is difficult to comprehend until you're standing on the edge, gazing into its depths. It stretches for 160 kilometers, a vast and rugged testament to the power of nature.

As we descended into the canyon, the temperature gradually rose, and the terrain became more challenging. We navigated rocky paths, clambered over boulders, and marveled at the unique geological formations. Aina, ever the adventurous one, was in her element, scrambling ahead and pointing out interesting rock formations. David, with his history background, kept us entertained with stories of the canyon's formation and the people who have called this place home over the centuries. I felt a deep connection to the land, a sense of coming home. Growing up in Omaruru, I always heard stories of this majestic canyon, but seeing it with my own eyes, with my family by my side, was an experience I will never forget.

The Fish River Canyon is more than just a geological wonder; it’s a place where you can feel the pulse of the earth and connect with the spirit of Namibia.

After a few hours of hiking, we reached the Sulphur Springs, also known as Palm Springs, a welcome oasis in the arid landscape. The warm, mineral-rich water gushes from the earth at a temperature of around 57 degrees Celsius. We found a muddy spot by the river and soaked our tired feet in the soothing water. According to local stories, the springs have therapeutic properties, and I must admit, my aching muscles felt instantly rejuvenated.

The origin of the palm trees at Sulphur Springs is shrouded in mystery. One popular theory suggests they sprouted from date pits discarded by German prisoners of war who escaped from a camp near Aus in 1916. Whether or not the story is true, the palms add a touch of the surreal to this already extraordinary place. We enjoyed our packed lunch by the springs, surrounded by the towering canyon walls and the gentle rustling of palm leaves. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

In the late afternoon, we reluctantly left the canyon and made our way towards the Naute Kristall Cellar and Distillery. I had read about this place and was eager to sample some of their locally produced spirits. The distillery is located near the Naute Dam, surrounded by date plantations and vineyards, a surprising sight in this arid region. Michael and Kathrin Weder, the owners, have created a true oasis, producing internationally acclaimed fine spirits from the fruits grown on their farm.

We arrived just in time for a tasting. We sampled five of their finest spirits, including the award-winning Devil's Claw NamGin. The gin was infused with the unique flavors of the Namibian desert, a complex and intriguing blend of botanicals. David, a connoisseur of fine spirits, was particularly impressed, and Aina enjoyed the date liqueur, which had a sweet and delicate flavor. I learned that the Naute Dam was built in 1973 to supply water to Keetmanshoop and irrigate fruit plantations. The project aimed to support Namibian farmers, transforming barren land into a flourishing agricultural area.

For dinner, we enjoyed a light meal at the distillery, savoring local delicacies such as biltong, cheese, and homemade bread. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we chatted with other travelers, sharing stories of our Namibian adventures. As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Ai Ais Reception and Bar for a nightcap. The bar was lively, filled with hikers and tourists unwinding after a long day of exploring the canyon. We sipped on local beers and reminisced about our day, feeling grateful for the experiences we had shared as a family.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit the Fish River Canyon Viewpoint and Four Finger Rock. I am excited to capture the panoramic views and explore the unique rock formations. We'll have breakfast near the canyon, lunch at The Kokerboom in Rosh Pinah, and dinner at Epata restaurant and accommodation. Before heading back to our camp, we might stop by the Ai-Ais Hot Springs shop. Today was a reminder of the beauty and resilience of the Namibian landscape and the warmth and ingenuity of its people. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings. For now, it’s time to rest and recharge under the vast Namibian sky.
