Essaouira's Embrace: A Day in the Medina
Today, Essaouira unfolded its layers, revealing a tapestry of sights, sounds, and flavors that captivated David, Aina, and me. It was a day where the spirit of Morocco truly resonated, creating memories we will cherish long after we've returned to London.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at The Loft. The cozy atmosphere, filled with vintage decor, was the perfect setting to start our explorations. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, while David enjoyed a classic English fry-up, a little piece of home so far away. Aina, ever the adventurous one, chose a fusion dish that blended local spices with a modern twist. The Loft is known for its seafood, but it was a bit early in the day for that. The Loft also has a gallery, so it is a restaurant, cafe, and gallery all in one.
After breakfast, we ventured into Place Moulay Hassan. The square was already buzzing with activity. I was immediately drawn to the energy of the square, a vibrant hub where the pulse of Essaouira could be felt. The square is near the fishing port so you can smell the ocean air. Although it's December, the air was crisp but pleasant, and the square was alive with locals and tourists alike. It's easy to see why Place Moulay Hassan is considered Essaouira's vibrant central square. As we strolled through, Aina was particularly fascinated by the impromptu street dance sessions that seemed to erupt spontaneously. David, ever the historian, pointed out the square's significance as a gateway to the medina, a place where cultures have mingled for centuries. We paused for a moment, sipping mint tea at a nearby café, watching the world go by.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.
Next on our itinerary was the Gallery Kasbah. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the medina, this gallery proved to be a sanctuary of art and culture. The gallery is located in a restored 18th-century Riad, which adds to the charm. The staff was incredibly kind and knowledgeable, enhancing our experience. The gallery showcased a range of Moroccan and African art, from traditional paintings to contemporary sculptures. I was particularly moved by the works of local artists, whose pieces reflected the soul of Essaouira. Aina, with her keen eye for design, was captivated by the intricate rugs and unique furniture on display. David, meanwhile, engaged in a conversation with one of the gallery owners, delving into the history and significance of the art. I enjoyed the art from local artists, like Erraad.

After immersing ourselves in the art scene, we were ready for lunch. We chose Umia Restaurant, known for its fusion cuisine. The restaurant's interior was as impressive as its menu, with a stylish and airy ambiance. We decided to share a few starters, including the highly recommended crab brioche, a delightful blend of flavors that left us wanting more. For the main course, David opted for the beef Wellington, while Aina chose the tuna steak, both cooked to perfection. I decided on the mushroom soup and lobster ravioli. The service was impeccable, with the staff being attentive and friendly. The portions were a bit small, but the taste made up for it.

Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring Dar Souiri, a cultural center that promised a glimpse into Essaouira's heritage. It seems we just missed the Festival des Andalousies Atlantiques which occurs in late October and early November. Dar Souiri is a place where melodies mixing Arabic, Hebrew, and Judeo-Arabic come to life. Unfortunately, there weren't any specific events happening today, but we were still able to appreciate the architecture and learn about the center's role in preserving local traditions. It's a shame we missed the Andalousies Atlantiques festival; it sounds like a beautiful celebration of music and culture.

As evening approached, we found ourselves drawn to Taros, a bar renowned for its stunning views of Place Moulay Hassan and the port. The view from the terrace was indeed breathtaking, with the setting sun casting a golden glow over the city. We ordered some local wine and tapas, soaking in the atmosphere as Gnaoua musicians filled the air with their captivating rhythms. While the view was lovely, the drinks were a bit pricey for Essaouira. Still, it was worth it for the ambiance and the chance to unwind after a day of exploration.

For our final culinary experience of the day, we chose Restaurant d'Orient et d'Ailleurs. This restaurant is known for its cozy atmosphere. The restaurant was a little gem tucked away in the alleyways. The decor was charming, with candlelit tables creating a warm and inviting ambiance. The food was a delightful fusion of Moroccan and French flavors, with dishes like lamb tagine and seafood gratin. I enjoyed the tagine of vegetables. The service was excellent, and the staff made us feel right at home. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with discovery and delight.

As we walked back to Hotel Des Iles, the sounds of Essaouira slowly faded into the night. Today was more than just ticking off sights on a list; it was about connecting with the soul of this enchanting city. Tomorrow, we're planning to embrace the coastal spirit of Essaouira with a visit to Explora Watersports for some kitesurfing, and then relaxing on Plage d'Essaouira. I'm also looking forward to browsing the unique finds at Histoire de Filles.
