Adieu, Essaouira!

As our week-long family escape to Essaouira draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the beautiful tapestry of experiences we've woven together. Today was a day of final explorations and savoring the last moments of this coastal paradise. It's amazing how quickly a place can feel like home, and Essaouira has certainly captured a piece of my heart.

Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Safran Citron. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of Moroccan spices filled the air as we enjoyed a traditional breakfast. David particularly enjoyed the tagine, while Aina savored the fresh fruit and mint tea. I opted for the msemen, a flaky pancake that always reminds me of home. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration and culinary delights.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set out to explore the historic City Walls of Essaouira. These ancient fortifications have stood for centuries, guarding the city and witnessing its rich history. As we walked along the ramparts, the waves crashed against the stone walls, creating a symphony of sound and motion. The views of the Atlantic Ocean were simply breathtaking, stretching out as far as the eye could see. I couldn't help but imagine the sailors of old, peering out from these very walls, their hearts filled with hope and adventure. Aina, ever the photographer, captured the scene with her camera, determined to preserve the memory of this stunning vista.

Essaouira, with its blend of history, culture, and coastal charm, has left an indelible mark on our hearts, a place we will always cherish.

The City Walls are a blend of sturdy stone and traditional Moroccan craftsmanship, giving the city a distinctive, historic character. Built in the 18th century to defend the city’s strategic port, these walls have witnessed centuries of trade, cultural exchanges, and coastal life. Today, they offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into Essaouira's past, while providing breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. From atop the walls, one can gaze over the bustling medina, with its white-washed buildings and lively markets. I found myself lost in thought, contemplating the passage of time and the enduring spirit of this remarkable city. It was a moment of profound connection, a reminder of the importance of preserving our history and cherishing our cultural heritage.

Next, we ventured to the Bab Marrakech Tower, an iconic landmark that serves as a grand entrance to the medina. As we approached the tower, we were captivated by its intricate stonework and the dramatic arched entrance that welcomed us into a world steeped in history. The tower, built in the 18th century, once served as a vital defensive structure against invaders, a symbol of Essaouira's resilience and charm. Today, the tower houses an art gallery, showcasing stunning examples of traditional Moroccan architecture. We explored the exhibits, admiring the calligraphy and the beautiful domed architecture. Aina was particularly fascinated by the historical boards, which provided insights into the tower's past. The panoramic views from the top of the tower were simply stunning, offering a unique perspective of Essaouira's rooftops and the surrounding landscape.

After immersing ourselves in history and art, it was time for lunch. We chose Miyam Restaurant, a hidden gem known for its homemade Moroccan food and family atmosphere. The cozy ambiance and friendly staff made us feel right at home. We indulged in a variety of traditional dishes, including tagines, couscous, and grilled sardines. The flavors were exquisite, a testament to the chef's passion and skill. David raved about the kefta tagine with dried fruits, while Aina couldn't get enough of the fish with orange butter. I savored every bite of the harissa, a spicy chili paste that added a fiery kick to the meal. It was a culinary experience that we will long remember.

With our appetites satisfied, we decided to do some last-minute shopping at Koulchi Concept Store. This unique store offers a wide range of artisanal creations from Morocco, including pottery, textiles, and jewelry. We wandered through the store, admiring the craftsmanship and the vibrant colors. Aina found a beautiful Berber rug to take back to London, while David purchased a set of hand-painted ceramic bowls. I couldn't resist buying a delicate silver necklace, a reminder of our time in Essaouira. The store itself is located in the center of the medina of Essaouira, in a 100% Beldi atmosphere.

For our final dinner in Essaouira, we chose La Table by Madada, a gourmet restaurant that blends history, gastronomy, and refinement. The restaurant is located in a former carob warehouse, adding to its unique charm. The ambiance was elegant and sophisticated, with live music adding to the atmosphere. We indulged in a seafood feast, savoring the fresh flavors of the Atlantic. David ordered the sea bass in salt crust, while Aina opted for the lobster and salmon couscous. I chose the spider crab gratin, a dish that was simply divine. The service was impeccable, and the wine selection was excellent. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey in Essaouira.
