Finding Peace Amidst Giants in Alleppey

Today was a day of contrasts, a harmonious blend of serene backwater beauty and the humbling presence of elephants. Alleppey continues to surprise and enchant me, offering experiences that resonate deeply with the soul. It's a reminder that travel isn't just about seeing new places, but about connecting with the essence of a place and its people.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Halais Restaurant. Priya had read rave reviews about their biryani, and we were eager to try it out. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign, and the aroma of spices filled the air. I opted for their famous Chicken Biryani, while Priya chose the Veg Biryani and Aarav, ever adventurous, went for the Dynamite Prawns. I must say, the Chicken Biryani lived up to its reputation; the rice was fragrant, the chicken tender, and the spices perfectly balanced. Priya thoroughly enjoyed her Veg Biryani, and Aarav was ecstatic about his prawns, though they were a tad too spicy for his liking! The waiter was very kind and offered him a small bowl of curd to cool down his palate. It was a perfect start to our day, fueling us for the adventures that lay ahead. The staff was friendly and had a great sense of humor.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the Great Backwaters. As we glided along the tranquil canals, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer beauty of nature surrounding us. The lush greenery, the gentle sway of palm trees, and the reflections of the sky on the water created a mesmerizing spectacle. It was as if we had entered a different world, far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. The backwaters of Alleppey are truly a world of their own, a labyrinth of canals, lakes, and lagoons that offer a glimpse into a simpler, more peaceful way of life. We passed by small villages, where locals were engaged in their daily routines – fishing, washing clothes, and tending to their farms. It was fascinating to witness their lives unfold against the backdrop of such natural beauty. I tried my hand at bargaining for some fresh toddy with a local, but my Malayalam wasn't quite up to par, much to Priya's amusement! The monsoon season has only amplified the beauty, painting the landscape in vibrant shades of green.

The beauty of the backwaters lies not just in its scenery, but in the rhythm of life that flows along with it.

For lunch, we decided to try Alleppey Kitchen, a place recommended for its authentic Kerala cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm ambiance that made us feel right at home. We ordered a traditional Kerala thali, a platter of various dishes served on a banana leaf. It was a feast for the senses, with an array of flavors and textures that tantalized our taste buds. From the spicy fish curry to the tangy sambar, every dish was a culinary masterpiece. Aarav particularly enjoyed the papadums, which he crunched with great enthusiasm! The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. Alleppey Kitchen truly lived up to its name, offering a taste of Kerala's rich culinary heritage. The excellent service made the experience even more memorable.

After a satisfying lunch, we ventured towards the Elephant Training Camp. I'll admit, I had mixed feelings about visiting such a place, given the ongoing debates about animal welfare. However, I wanted to see for myself how these majestic creatures were being treated and learn more about their role in Kerala's culture. The camp was located amidst lush greenery, and as we approached, we could hear the gentle rumbling of elephants. We watched as the mahouts bathed and fed the elephants, their bond evident in their gentle interactions. Aarav was absolutely thrilled to see the elephants up close, his eyes wide with wonder. He even got a chance to feed them bananas, an experience he will surely cherish forever. While the camp offered elephant rides, we opted to simply observe and interact with the elephants from a respectful distance. I learned that many of these elephants are part of religious processions, highlighting their integral role in Kerala's cultural traditions. It was a humbling experience, witnessing the intelligence and grace of these gentle giants. However, I couldn't shake off the feeling that more could be done to ensure their well-being, a sentiment echoed by some of the reviews I'd read. I hope that in the future, such camps will prioritize conservation and ethical treatment above all else.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at Arcadia Bar. The bar had a relaxed vibe. I ordered a local beer, while Priya opted for a refreshing lime soda. We sat and reminisced about the day's adventures, watching the world go by. It was the perfect way to end our day in Alleppey, a moment of quiet contemplation amidst the vibrant energy of the town. Though I must admit, the reviews online mentioned that the bar's proximity to the hotel entrance could be a bit uncomfortable for families, thankfully, we didn't experience any such issues.

Dinner was at Classic Regency Restaurant (Rasoi), known for its delicious duck roast. The restaurant had a pleasant ambiance, and the staff was courteous. We ordered the duck roast, of course, and it was indeed a culinary delight. The duck was cooked to perfection, and the spices were just right. Aarav, surprisingly, enjoyed it too, a testament to the chef's skill! It was a fitting end to a day filled with diverse experiences and unforgettable memories. The restaurant’s location near the beach is a plus, offering stunning views.

Tomorrow, we're planning a relaxing day at the beach and some kayaking [If interested in Ayurvedic treatments and wellness, mention Sitaram Beach Retreat or Amal Tamara]. I'm looking forward to soaking up the sun and enjoying the coastal breeze. Alleppey continues to unfold its treasures, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. The plan is to start the day with breakfast at THAFF Delicacy Restaurant YMCA Alappuzha, followed by some beach time and then kayaking with RajA Kayakaing Alappuzha (Kerala). Lunch will be at BayRoute Bistro, and we'll end the day with dinner at The Ocean Kitchen. Perhaps we'll even squeeze in some shopping at New Alleppey Cotton Store!

Today, Alleppey showed me its many faces – the tranquility of its backwaters, the majesty of its elephants, and the warmth of its people. It's a place that stays with you long after you've left, a reminder of the simple joys of life and the beauty that surrounds us. As I reflect on the day, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had and the memories I've created with my family. Alleppey, you've captured my heart, and I can't wait to explore more of your wonders.

I almost forgot my umbrella today, thankfully Priya reminded me just as we were stepping out of the houseboat this morning!
