Day 10: Beach Bliss and Backwater Paddles: Exploring Alleppey's Charms
Discover Alleppey's serene beaches, thrilling kayaking adventures, and culinary delights on day ten of our family's Kerala journey.
A Day of Sun, Sea, and Serenity
Today was a delightful mix of relaxation and adventure as we continued to explore the backwaters of Alleppey. The day unfolded with the promise of sun-kissed beaches, thrilling kayaking, and delicious food. It was a day where we truly immersed ourselves in the beauty and culture of this unique region.
We started our day with a hearty breakfast at THAFF Delicacy Restaurant YMCA Alappuzha. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with some authentic Kerala cuisine. I decided to try their famous Kerala thali, which was a generous serving of rice, various curries, and side dishes. Priya opted for appam with vegetable stew, while Aarav, ever the fan of familiar flavors, chose a simple dosa. The food was delicious, and the service was quick and friendly, setting a positive tone for the day ahead.

After breakfast, we headed to the beach. Alleppey is known for its stunning beaches, and we were eager to experience the coastal charm. As we arrived, the sight of the Arabian Sea was breathtaking. The waves crashed gently against the shore, and the golden sand stretched out before us. Aarav was immediately drawn to the water, splashing and playing with the waves. Priya and I took a leisurely stroll along the beach, enjoying the cool breeze and the warmth of the sun.

We spent a couple of hours on the beach, building sandcastles, collecting seashells, and simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. It was the perfect way to unwind and enjoy some quality family time. I couldn't help but reflect on how lucky I am to be able to share these experiences with my family. Leaving Mauritius for Canada was a big step, but it opened up a world of opportunities, including the chance to explore incredible places like Alleppey. I made sure to apply sunscreen, remembering how I forgot the umbrella from our trip essentials. I also captured some photographs, hoping to add to my collection of travel memories.
Around midday, we decided to try our hand at kayaking. We had booked a session with RajA Kayaking Alappuzha (Kerala), a local company that offers guided kayaking tours through the backwaters. I was initially a bit apprehensive, as I'm not the most experienced kayaker, but the staff at RajA Kayaking were incredibly helpful and reassuring. They provided us with life jackets and a brief safety demonstration before we set off on our adventure.

As we paddled through the narrow canals, I was struck by the tranquility and beauty of the surroundings. The water was calm and clear, and the lush green vegetation along the banks created a stunning backdrop. We passed by traditional houseboats, vibrant Kerala scenery, and lush green paddy fields. Aarav was fascinated by the local wildlife, pointing out various birds and fish along the way. Priya and I enjoyed the peace and quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The beauty of Alleppey lies not just in its landscapes, but in the way it slows down time, allowing you to savor each moment.
Kayaking through the backwaters was a truly immersive experience. We got to see the local way of life up close, observing fishermen casting their nets, women washing clothes in the river, and children playing by the water's edge. It was a humbling reminder of the simple joys in life and the importance of connecting with nature. I was so glad that we decided to include this activity in our itinerary. It was a unique and unforgettable way to experience the beauty of Alleppey. I was also relieved that I got used to kayaking quickly, as I was a bit scared at first.
By the time we finished kayaking, we were famished. We decided to have lunch at BayRoute Bistro, a restaurant known for its multi-cuisine offerings. The restaurant had a relaxed and inviting ambiance, and the menu featured a wide range of dishes to suit every palate. I opted for the Lebanese rice with chicken, while Priya chose the hot and sour chicken soup. Aarav, of course, went for his favorite, fried rice. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. We particularly enjoyed the white chocolate raspberry delight, which was the perfect way to end our meal.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping. We visited the New Alleppey Cotton Store, a local shop that specializes in cotton clothing and textiles. I was looking for some traditional Indian clothing to take back home as souvenirs, and Priya wanted to buy some new sarees. The shop had a wide selection of colorful fabrics and intricate designs. Aarav even found a shirt with a Sega Soccer logo, which I am sure he will enjoy playing when we return to Toronto. The staff were friendly and helpful, assisting us in finding the perfect items. We ended up buying a few kurtas for myself, some sarees for Priya, and some cotton shirts for Aarav. I even picked up a cotton mattress, remembering the great reviews I read about it.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to The Ocean Kitchen for dinner. This restaurant is renowned for its North and South Indian dishes, especially the biryani. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff were attentive and friendly. I ordered the signature biryani, while Priya decided to try the non-vegetarian delicacies inspired by North Eastern Indian traditions. Aarav, predictably, chose butter chicken with naan. The food was exceptional, with each dish bursting with flavor and aroma. We savored every bite, reminiscing about the day's adventures and feeling grateful for the wonderful experiences we were sharing as a family.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're excited to experience a traditional houseboat cruise through the backwaters, followed by a visit to the Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Cathedral. It promises to be another day filled with cultural immersion and scenic beauty. For dinner, we plan to visit Kream Korner, Alappuzha.
Today in Alleppey was a perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion. From the sun-kissed beaches to the tranquil backwaters, every moment was filled with beauty and wonder. As I reflect on our experiences, I am reminded of the importance of cherishing these moments with my loved ones and embracing the simple joys of life.
Traveling with Priya and Aarav makes every journey special. Their presence enhances every experience, and their laughter fills my heart with joy.
