Finding Paradise in Ourika Valley

Today was a day of pure enchantment in the Ourika Valley. Leaving the vibrant hues of Marrakech behind, I found myself immersed in a landscape that felt like a world away. The air was fresher, the colors greener, and the spirit of the Berber people filled every corner of this hidden paradise. It was a day of hiking, delicious food, and cultural immersion, experiences I am thrilled to share.

Our adventure began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Restaurant TILILA GARDEN. The serene setting, nestled amidst lush greenery, was the perfect way to start the day. Sipping on traditional mint tea and savoring local pastries, I felt completely at peace, ready for whatever the day held. Hans and I enjoyed the quiet start, a welcome change from the lively souks of Marrakech. I made a mental note to try and recreate the pastries back in Berlin – a little taste of Morocco to brighten our mornings back home.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to explore the Ourika Valley Waterfalls. The drive itself was a treat, winding through picturesque landscapes dotted with traditional Berber villages. I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement as we approached the trailhead, the sound of rushing water growing louder with each step.

The hike to the waterfalls was nothing short of exhilarating. The trail, while not always easy, offered breathtaking views at every turn. We passed by locals selling handmade crafts and Berber refrigerators, small terraces where drinks are cooled by running water. The path wound along the river, crossing makeshift bridges and rocky terrain. I was grateful for my hiking boots, a definite essential for this adventure. I did forget my sunglasses and portable phone charger, though. I knew I would regret that later.

As we climbed higher, the sound of the waterfalls grew louder, and the anticipation became almost palpable. Finally, we reached the first of the Setti Fadma (Ourika Valley & 7 Cascades). The sight was simply stunning – a cascade of crystal-clear water tumbling down the rocks, surrounded by lush greenery. I took a moment to simply breathe in the beauty, feeling the cool mist on my face. It was the perfect reward for our efforts.

The beauty of Ourika Valley lies not only in its landscapes but also in the warmth and authenticity of its people.

We continued our hike, eager to discover more of the seven waterfalls that Setti Fadma has to offer. The higher we climbed, the more challenging the trail became, but the views were more than worth it. Each waterfall had its own unique charm, some with natural pools perfect for a refreshing dip. Although the water was freezing, a few brave souls, mostly locals, were enjoying a swim. I decided to admire from afar, content with simply soaking in the atmosphere.

After our invigorating hike, it was time for lunch. We stopped at Café Restaurant Azaghar Ourika, a charming spot with stunning views of the valley. The restaurant offered traditional Moroccan cuisine, and we indulged in a delicious tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices. The mint tea, of course, was a must. As we ate, we watched the locals go about their daily lives, feeling a sense of connection to this special place.

In the late afternoon, we ventured back towards Marrakech, but not before a little indulgence. As the sun began to set, we made our way to Le Salama Sky-bar. Perched high above the city, this rooftop bar offered panoramic views of Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains. Sipping on a refreshing cocktail, we watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The atmosphere was lively, with music and a mix of locals and tourists. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible experiences of the day. From the tranquil beauty of the Ourika Valley Waterfalls to the delicious flavors of Moroccan cuisine and the vibrant atmosphere of Le Salama Sky-bar, every moment was a feast for the senses. It was a day that reminded me why I love to travel – to discover new cultures, connect with nature, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the bio-aromatique de l'Ourika Garden and Anima (André Heller Garden), followed by lunch at Ristorante Almandar and dinner at Restaurant La Nature. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Khalid Tafza Ourika pottery workshop – a chance to learn about traditional crafts and perhaps even try my hand at pottery. I'm excited to see what new adventures tomorrow will bring!

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can still feel the cool mist of the waterfalls on my face and taste the sweet mint tea on my tongue. The Ourika Valley has captured a piece of my heart, and I know I will carry its beauty with me long after I leave. I am truly grateful for this experience and can't wait to share more of my Moroccan adventures with you all.

Back in Berlin, Hans and I often visit the Turkish Market am Maybachufer to buy groceries, and I find myself drawn to the spices and aromas that remind me of my travels. It's a small way to keep the spirit of adventure alive, even when I'm back in my everyday life.

And now, it's time for a well-deserved rest. Goodnight from Morocco!
