A Day of Discovery in the Ourika Valley

Today was a sensory explosion! From the fragrant fields of saffron to the cool depths of ancient caves, the Ourika Valley revealed more of its hidden treasures. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the unexpected discoveries, the vibrant culture, and the sheer beauty of the natural world. I am excited to share my experiences of today with you all.



Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Imouzzer cafe and restaurantu and hôtel. The mountain views were stunning, and the traditional Moroccan breakfast of bread, olives, and mint tea set the perfect tone for our adventures. It's amazing how a simple meal can taste so incredible when enjoyed in such a beautiful setting. I made sure to enjoy a freshly brewed mint tea, as it is a local favourite. I must admit, I am becoming quite the mint tea connoisseur on this trip! I made sure to take in the views during breakfast.

After breakfast, we set off to Paradis du Safran Maroc, a saffron farm nestled in the heart of the valley. The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the lush landscape. When we arrived, we were greeted by the owner, Christine Ferrari, a Swiss woman who followed her dream to Morocco. Her story is truly inspiring – leaving behind her old life in Basel to cultivate saffron in this beautiful corner of the world.

Walking through the saffron fields was like stepping into a dream. The vibrant purple flowers, the delicate fragrance, and the sheer dedication that Christine and her team put into their work were truly captivating. We learned about the entire process, from planting the bulbs to harvesting the precious stigmas, each step requiring meticulous care and attention. It was fascinating to discover how much labor goes into producing this spice, which is more valuable than gold.

Christine also showed us how to distinguish between real and fake saffron and had us try saffron dip. Of course, I couldn't leave without purchasing some of her high-quality, Swiss-certified organic saffron. I’m already planning to use it in a paella when I get back to Berlin, a little taste of Morocco in my own kitchen. I also bought some tea blends.

It's not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing them with all your senses, connecting with the local culture, and finding inspiration in the stories of the people you meet.

Next on our itinerary was the Ourika Cave. After the vibrant colours of the saffron farm, entering the cool, dark cave felt like stepping into another world. The caves have served as shelters for indigenous people. While the cave itself wasn’t massive, it held a certain mystique. I couldn’t help but imagine the generations who had sought refuge within its walls, their stories echoing through the ages. The air was cool and damp, and the silence was broken only by the occasional drip of water. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the enduring power of nature and the long history of human presence in this valley.

After exploring the cave, hunger started to kick in. We headed to Restaurant Reunion Familiar for lunch. This restaurant offered authentic Moroccan cuisine. I decided to try a tagine, and it was absolutely delicious. The spices were perfectly balanced, and the meat was tender and flavorful. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning adventures. Hans enjoyed a traditional couscous dish.

With our bellies full, we made our way to La kasbah d'ourika, a shop known for its handcrafted goods. I was on the hunt for a unique souvenir, something that would remind me of my time in the Ourika Valley. The kasbah was a treasure trove of carpets, pottery, and jewelry. I finally settled on a beautiful Berber rug, handwoven with intricate designs. It was a bit of a splurge, but I knew it was something I would cherish for years to come. The staff were hospitable and kind.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to La Clé Des Huiles Ourika for dinner. The restaurant is known for its serene dining experience and exquisite Moroccan cuisine. The ambiance was magical, with soft lighting and gentle music creating a relaxed atmosphere. We sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air and the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. For dinner, I chose a traditional Moroccan dish with a modern twist, and Hans opted for a classic tagine. Both were delicious, and we savored every bite. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the Ourika Valley and visit the stunning La vallée d'ourika. I’m also looking forward to relaxing at a local bar in the evening. I'm excited to see what other adventures await us!

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we stopped for a moment to take in the night sky. The stars shone brightly, undeterred by city lights, and a sense of peace washed over me. It was a reminder of the simple beauty of nature and the importance of taking time to appreciate it. As we drove back, I felt grateful for the experiences of the day and excited for what tomorrow would bring.

It’s amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you’re open to new experiences. The Ourika Valley continues to surprise and delight me, and I can’t wait to see what other hidden gems it has in store.
