A Day of Serenity and Discovery

Today marked another chapter in my solo adventure through the Con Dao Islands, a day dedicated to exploring the spiritual and natural wonders of this enchanting archipelago. From the depths of a sacred cave to the heights of a scenic cape, and the delightful tastes discovered along the way, Con Dao continued to reveal its many layers.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at MAY BISTRO. I opted for a Banh Mi, a Vietnamese sandwich, paired with a strong Vietnamese coffee. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. As an urban beekeeper in Berlin, I appreciate fresh, local ingredients, and MAY BISTRO seemed to share that philosophy, offering a delightful blend of flavors. It was a simple pleasure, but one that set a positive tone for the adventures ahead.
Fueled and ready, my first destination was the Holy Cave (Hang Than). The journey to the cave was an experience in itself, a winding road leading through Con Dao National Park's lush greenery. The park is only a few kilometers from town. I followed Vo Thi Sau street and Huynh Thuc Khang, and then followed the sign to the management room to get a ticket. The air was thick with the scent of tropical foliage, a symphony of buzzing insects, and the occasional chirp of unseen birds. I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence as I approached the site. I have always found solace in nature, a feeling that is intensified in places considered sacred.
As I ventured deeper into the cave, the temperature dropped noticeably. The air was cool and damp, carrying with it the echoes of centuries past. The cave itself was a natural cathedral, with stalactites and stalagmites forming intricate patterns on the walls. Light filtered in through openings in the ceiling, casting an ethereal glow on the interior.
I learned that the cave has been a place of prayer and reflection for generations, with locals and visitors alike seeking solace within its depths. The drive to Chim Chim cape was breathtaking. The road hugged the coastline, offering panoramic views of the turquoise waters and rugged cliffs. The cape is located on Co Ong Road. Along the way, I passed local villages and fishing boats bobbing gently in the sea. It was a reminder of the simple, unhurried pace of life on the island.
Arriving at Chim Chim cape, I was immediately struck by its natural beauty. The cape is a dramatic promontory, with jagged rocks and crashing waves. The wind was strong, carrying with it the salty scent of the sea. I climbed to the highest point of the cape, taking in the breathtaking views.
Below, the waves crashed against the rocks, creating a mesmerizing display of power and beauty. In the distance, I could see the outline of other islands, shrouded in mist. It was a scene of unparalleled grandeur, a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of nature. The name “Chim Chim” Cape is said to have come from the fact that the cape looks like a bird's feet from above. According to residents, many birds used to live there.

I spent a long time simply sitting on the rocks, lost in contemplation. I thought about my life back in Berlin, my work with the bees, and my relationship with Hans. I realized how much I missed him and the simple joys of our life together. This trip was a chance to reconnect with myself, but it also made me appreciate the love and companionship I had back home. I made a mental note to bring Hans here someday, to share this beautiful place with him.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, I made my way down from the cape. The sky was ablaze with color, a riot of oranges, pinks, and purples. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. Chim Chim cape is known as the best place to watch the sunrise and sunset in Con Dao.

The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the culinary delights of Con Dao.
I ordered a plate of grilled prawns and a side of stir-fried vegetables. The prawns were succulent and flavorful, cooked to perfection. The vegetables were fresh and crisp, a delightful complement to the seafood. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the simple pleasures of life: good food, good company, and a beautiful setting. The restaurant has tanks of live seafood, ensuring freshness.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I stopped by Shop Thắng Hường. I wanted to find a small souvenir to remind me of my time in Con Dao. The shop was filled with local handicrafts and trinkets, each one telling a story of the island's culture and history. I picked out a small, hand-painted ceramic bell, its gentle chime a reminder of the peacefulness I had found here.

As I reflect on my day, I am struck by the diversity of experiences Con Dao has to offer. As I prepare for my final day in Con Dao, I feel a sense of anticipation and excitement. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Hang Duong Cemetery and the Phú Tường prison. I am eager to learn more about the island's history and pay my respects to those who have shaped its destiny.
I am also thinking of skipping the Sea sense bar and grill, because I am not in the mood for a bar. I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with Hans and planning our next adventure together. Though I travel solo on this trip, I know that our shared experiences make our bond stronger.
Con Dao has captured my heart, and I know I will carry its spirit with me long after I leave. It is a place of beauty, history, and spirituality, a true gem in the heart of Vietnam.
