Exploring the untouched beauty of Hon Tre Lon and relaxing at Bai Suoi Nong, Con Dao offers a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.
Con Dao's Hidden Gems: Islands and Thermal Waters
Today was a day of pure bliss, a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation that reminded me why I embarked on this solo journey to Con Dao. Leaving behind the familiar streets of Berlin and my rooftop beehives, I sought solace in the untouched beauty of this Vietnamese archipelago. And today, I found it in abundance.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Infinity Cafe & Restaurant. The cafe was indeed radiant, and the vintage decor created a relaxing atmosphere. I enjoyed a delicious plate of Banh Mi, accompanied by a strong Vietnamese coffee. Fuelled up for the day, I was ready to explore the wonders that Con Dao had in store. It was a great start, and I knew Hans would have loved the coffee here; he always appreciates a good brew with a view.
Hòn Tre Lớn: A Snorkeler's Paradise
Next on the itinerary was Hòn Tre Lớn, also known as Big Bamboo Island. The boat ride to the island was an adventure in itself, with panoramic views of the town and the surrounding sea and sky. As we approached Hòn Tre Lớn, I was struck by its pristine beauty. The island covers 77 hectares and is covered with a cool bamboo forest. The North, West and South sides boast colorful coral reefs, making it an ideal location for snorkeling.

Diving into the crystal-clear waters, I was immediately greeted by a vibrant underwater world. Schools of colorful fish darted around the coral reefs, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. The coral was in excellent condition, a testament to the island's commitment to preserving its natural beauty. I spent hours exploring the depths, marveling at the diverse marine ecosystem. It was an amazing experience, and I felt a deep connection with nature.
Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that lead us to places untouched by the masses, where nature reigns supreme and serenity washes over us.
After snorkeling, I took some time to relax on the quiet white sandy beach. It felt like my own private paradise. The sun was warm, the breeze was gentle, and the sound of the waves was soothing. I closed my eyes and let the tranquility of the island wash over me. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.
Lunch at Nhà hàng Thu Ba: A Taste of Local Flavors
By midday, my stomach was rumbling, so I headed to Nhà hàng Thu Ba for lunch. This restaurant is renowned for its fresh seafood and traditional Vietnamese cuisine. With over 30 years of history, Nhà hàng Thu Ba offers a diverse seafood menu. I decided to try the Bề Bề rang muối (mantis shrimp with salt), Cua mặt trăng (moon crab), and Ốc vú nàng (snail). The food was delicious, and the prices were reasonable. The staff were friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home.

I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this hidden gem and eager to continue exploring its wonders.
Linh Bùi Store: A Cultural Treasure Trove
After lunch, I decided to explore the local culture with a visit to Linh Bùi Store. This store is known for its unique costumes and clothing that reflect the rich heritage of Vietnam. I spent hours browsing through the collection, admiring the intricate designs and vibrant colors. It was a fascinating glimpse into the local traditions and craftsmanship.

I ended up buying a beautiful Áo dài, a traditional Vietnamese dress. The fabric was soft and delicate, and the embroidery was exquisite. I couldn't wait to wear it and feel like a true Vietnamese woman. It was a perfect souvenir to remind me of my time in Con Dao.
Bãi Suối Nóng: A Relaxing Oasis
The final stop of the day was Bãi Suối Nóng, also known as Hot Springs Beach or Bai Bi Mat (Secret Beach). This beach is famous for its natural hot springs, which originate deep in the forest. The water temperature is around 50°C at the source, creating a mystical atmosphere with steam rising from the stream. As the water flows towards the sea, it cools down, making it perfect for a relaxing soak.

I waded into the warm water and felt my muscles instantly relax. The sensation was incredible, like a natural spa treatment. I closed my eyes and let the warmth soothe my body and mind. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure. The combination of the warm water and the stunning natural scenery created a truly magical experience. It was so peaceful, and the scenery was magnificent.
Before dinner, I quickly stopped by a local shop to grab some insect repellent, remembering how much I regretted forgetting it. I made a mental note to always double-check my packing list.
Nhà Hàng Cánh Buồm: A Culinary Farewell
For dinner, I chose Nhà Hàng Cánh Buồm, enticed by its reputation for high-quality seafood and stunning ocean views. I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant was warm and inviting, reflecting the local culture. I savored a meal of grilled fish, prepared using traditional recipes passed down through generations. Watching the sunset over the water while I ate was the perfect end to a perfect day.
