Whispers of History and Faith

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time that took us from the grandeur of ancient Rome to the serene heart of Moroccan spirituality. It was a day filled with visual splendor, from intricate mosaics to panoramic vistas, and a deeper understanding of the layers of history that make this region so compelling. I’m eager to share the experiences that unfolded as Hans and I explored the treasures of Volubilis and the sacred town of Moulay Idriss.

Our day began with an early breakfast at Restaurant Moulay Idriss. The traditional Moroccan fare of crusty bread, olives, and mint tea was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The restaurant buzzed with locals starting their day, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for what lay ahead. After all, I was excited to see more of Morocco with Hans.

Our first destination was the ancient Roman city of Volubilis. As we approached the site, the sprawling ruins rising from the fertile plains were a sight to behold. The September sun was already warming the stones, casting long shadows that danced across the landscape. I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the city, imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago.

Wandering through the ruins, I felt as though I was walking in the footsteps of Roman citizens, merchants, and Berber tribes who once called this place home. The remarkably well-preserved mosaics were a highlight, depicting scenes from mythology and everyday life with incredible detail. I was particularly captivated by the House of Orpheus, where a stunning mosaic floor portrays Orpheus playing his lyre to an audience of animals. It’s amazing to think that these intricate artworks have survived for over two thousand years.

Hans, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the Roman engineering feats evident throughout the city. He marveled at the sophisticated water systems, the public baths, and the towering arches that still stand as testaments to Roman ingenuity. We spent hours exploring the basilica, the capitol, and the triumphal arch of Caracalla, each structure whispering stories of a bygone era.

To walk through Volubilis is to step back in time, to imagine the lives of those who walked these streets centuries ago.

After a morning of exploring Volubilis, we were ready for lunch. We found a charming spot called Roman City, a restaurant that offered a delightful mix of Moroccan and Western cuisine. I opted for a tagine, savoring the rich flavors of slow-cooked lamb, vegetables, and aromatic spices. Hans, craving something familiar, chose a simple but delicious pasta dish. The meal was a welcome respite, allowing us to relax and reflect on the wonders we had just witnessed.

With our bellies full and our spirits refreshed, we made our way to the sacred town of Moulay Idriss. Nestled on the slopes of Mount Zerhoun, the town is named after Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and a key figure in the spread of Islam in Morocco. As we approached the town, I was struck by its beauty, a cluster of white-washed buildings clinging to the hillside, a beacon of faith and history.

The Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er, the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I, is the heart of the town and a major pilgrimage site. Although non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the mausoleum itself, the atmosphere of reverence and devotion was palpable. I watched as pilgrims from all over Morocco came to pay their respects, their faces filled with piety and hope.

We wandered through the narrow, winding streets of Moulay Idriss, soaking in the unique atmosphere. The town is a maze of alleyways, each turn revealing a new vista or a hidden courtyard. The air was filled with the sounds of daily life – the calls of vendors, the chatter of locals, and the melodic strains of the call to prayer. I was particularly fascinated by the local artisans, who were busy creating traditional crafts, from intricate tilework to hand-woven carpets.

As the sun began to set, we found ourselves at Dar Zerhoune, a bar known for its panoramic views. From the terrace, we gazed out over the town, the rolling hills, and the distant ruins of Volubilis. The sky was ablaze with color, a fiery canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day, a moment of serenity and reflection.

For dinner, we decided to try Grillade Albanna, a local restaurant known for its grilled meats. The aroma of sizzling kebabs filled the air as we entered, and I knew we were in for a treat. We ordered a selection of grilled lamb, chicken, and beef, accompanied by fresh salads and crusty bread. The meal was simple but satisfying, a true taste of Moroccan cuisine.

As we walked back to our guesthouse, the town was quiet and peaceful. The stars were out in full force, twinkling in the clear night sky. I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day, for the opportunity to witness the beauty and history of this remarkable region. It was a day that will stay with me long after we leave Morocco.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Le portail de Moulay Ismaïl and Kasabah Senhaji. I am excited to see what those locations have to offer.

I am also grateful to be sharing this experience with Hans. His enthusiasm and curiosity always enrich our travels, and I cherish the memories we are creating together. I am also grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with you, my readers. Your support and encouragement mean the world to me, and I hope that my stories inspire you to explore the world and discover its hidden treasures.

I am also thankful that I remembered to pack my camera and comfortable walking shoes. However, I am still regretting forgetting my sunscreen and local SIM card. I will be sure to purchase these items tomorrow. Good night!
