Day 8: Stepping Back in Time: Exploring Zerhoun and the Sacred Views of Moulay Idriss
Discover the ancient wonders of Zerhoun and the breathtaking views of Moulay Idriss, a day steeped in history and Moroccan culture.
A Day Among Saints and Ruins
Today, Hans and I embarked on a journey that felt like stepping back in time. From exploring ancient Roman ruins to soaking in the spiritual atmosphere of a holy city, it was a day filled with contrasts and profound beauty. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to immerse myself in cultures so different from my own and to learn from the echoes of the past.
Our day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Restaurant Moulay Idriss. The traditional mint tea, fragrant and sweet, was the perfect start. I always appreciate how Moroccans take the time to savor their tea; it’s more than just a drink, it's a ritual. Sipping it slowly while overlooking the town waking up, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. It reminded me of mornings back in Lampang, Thailand, where life moves at a slower, more deliberate pace. Hans, ever the early bird, was already making plans for the day, his guidebook open and his eyes sparkling with anticipation.
After breakfast, we set out to explore Zerhoun. The mountain itself is a sight to behold, rising majestically above the surrounding landscape. Knowing that Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty, is buried here adds a layer of reverence to the experience. The town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun clings to the hills, its white-washed buildings creating a stunning visual cascade.

As we wandered through the streets of Zerhoun, I couldn't help but notice the quiet spirituality that permeates the air. The town is considered one of Morocco’s holiest sites, second only to Mecca for some. Until recently, non-Muslims weren't allowed to stay overnight, adding to its mystique. Even now, there's a sense of stepping into a different world, one where faith and history intertwine seamlessly.
We then ventured to the Roman City restaurant for lunch. It felt a bit surreal to be enjoying a meal so close to ancient ruins. While the food was simple and satisfying, my mind was wandering back in time, imagining what life must have been like in Volubilis during its Roman heyday. The contrast between the ancient stones and the bustling modern life of the town was striking.
The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.
After lunch, we sought out the Small Terasse (view on the mosque), hoping to capture the famed view of the mosque. Finding it was a bit of an adventure in itself, navigating the labyrinthine streets, but the reward was well worth the effort. The view was simply breathtaking. The mosque, with its green-tiled roof, stood out against the white-washed buildings, a beacon of faith and history. I spent a long time simply soaking in the scene, trying to capture the essence of Moulay Idriss in my mind's eye. Hans, meanwhile, was busy snapping photos from every angle, determined to capture the perfect shot.

Later in the afternoon, we found ourselves at LA TERRASSE, a local bar where we decided to relax and enjoy the stunning views with a refreshing drink. The atmosphere was lively, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the panoramic vistas. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. I savored a glass of fresh orange juice, while Hans opted for a local beer. We chatted about our favorite moments of the day, sharing stories and laughter.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Al Andaloussiya Diyafa for dinner. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with traditional Moroccan décor and the aroma of spices filling the air. We indulged in a tagine, the rich flavors a perfect ending to a day of cultural immersion. The warmth of the food and the ambiance of the restaurant made me feel right at home, a comforting feeling so far away from Hannover.

Reflecting on the day, I feel so grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Moulay Idriss. It's a place that stays with you, a reminder of the power of faith and the enduring legacy of the past. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visiting DAR INES MOULAY IDRISS ZERHOUN and the Khemis Gate, I'm filled with anticipation for what new discoveries await us. I am particularly excited to visit the artisan cooperative, The Anou Cooperative, as I am always eager to support local craftsmanship and find unique souvenirs. I wonder what treasures and stories tomorrow will bring. For now, I'll rest and dream of minarets and mosaics, ready to embrace another day in this enchanting land.
