Saturday's Serene Discoveries in Chefchaouen
Today was a day of gentle exploration and delightful surprises here in Chefchaouen. With Andreas and the group, I set out to experience the quieter side of this blue-washed city, seeking out its hidden corners and savoring the local flavors. It was a day filled with simple pleasures and unexpected beauty, a perfect reflection of the relaxed pace of life here in Morocco.
Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at MIDO'S. It seems like a popular spot, though they hadn't uploaded their menu yet. Still, the atmosphere was welcoming , and we enjoyed some traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for our day of exploration. I always appreciate a good cup of coffee to kickstart my morning, especially when I know a day of walking and sightseeing awaits. We sat outside, soaking in the morning sun and watching the town slowly wake up. It's moments like these that make me feel truly connected to a place, observing the locals going about their daily routines and feeling the rhythm of a new city.

After breakfast, we decided to take a stroll through Park Sidi Abdelhamid. It was a welcome escape from the bustling medina, a green oasis offering respite and tranquility. The park was filled with families enjoying the weekend, children laughing as they played, and couples strolling hand-in-hand. I found myself drawn to the vibrant colors of the flowers and the soothing sounds of the birds singing. Andreas, ever the observant one, pointed out the intricate patterns in the park's landscaping, noting the careful attention to detail. As a floral designer, I couldn't help but appreciate the artistry and creativity that went into creating such a beautiful space. It reminded me of my own garden back in Bonn, and I felt a pang of longing for the familiar scents and sights of home. But then I reminded myself that I was here to experience something new, to embrace the beauty of a different culture, and to create memories that would last a lifetime.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives.
Next on our itinerary was Bab El Ain, one of the main entrances to Chefchaouen's historic medina. This iconic gateway is more than just a passageway; it's a symbol of the city's rich cultural heritage. As we approached, I was struck by the stunning architecture, reflecting the traditional craftsmanship of the region. The archway itself was beautifully adorned, inviting us to step through and immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the medina. Apparently, Bab al-Ain and Bab Souk are some of the historic gates that are still preserved.

Wandering through the narrow, winding streets, we found ourselves surrounded by shops selling handmade crafts, spices, and local delicacies. The blue-washed walls created a serene backdrop, making every corner a photo opportunity. I couldn't resist purchasing a few small souvenirs, tokens to remind me of this magical place. The medina was a feast for the senses, with the aroma of local cuisine filling the air and the sounds of bartering echoing through the streets. I was particularly fascinated by the intricate tile work and ornate designs that adorned many of the buildings, each telling a story of the past. Andreas, always eager to learn, struck up a conversation with a local artisan, inquiring about the history and significance of the traditional patterns. It's these interactions that truly enrich our travel experiences, allowing us to connect with the people and culture on a deeper level.
For lunch, we decided to try Chez Foad, a restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan dishes. The staff was incredibly welcoming, and the service was top-notch. We indulged in a tagine, savoring the complex flavors and tender meat. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning of exploration. I was particularly impressed by the restaurant's décor, which created a cozy and relaxed atmosphere. It felt like stepping into someone's home, a warm and inviting space where we could unwind and enjoy a delicious meal. Sophie, if she were here, would have loved the atmosphere. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes when I got back home, hoping to bring a little piece of Morocco back to Bonn with me.

We enjoyed some local wine and tapas, soaking in the vibrant energy of the city. It was a great way to unwind after a day of sightseeing. The view of the Grand Mosque from the bar was truly breathtaking, especially as the sun began to set and the city was bathed in a golden light. I felt a sense of gratitude for being able to experience such beauty and tranquility, a reminder of the simple joys in life.

Finally, for dinner, we chose BILMOS, a restaurant that blends traditional Moroccan flavors with a modern Italian twist. The menu offered a variety of options, and we all found something to our liking. I opted for a vegan tagine , which was absolutely delicious. The restaurant had a warm atmosphere , and the service was excellent. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day. The blend of Moroccan and Italian cuisine was unexpected but delightful, a testament to the city's diverse cultural influences. I appreciated the effort the restaurant made to cater to different dietary needs, offering a separate vegan menu, which is apparently rare for Morocco.
