Day 2: Reaching New Heights in Chefchaouen: A Summit and Cultural Dive
Embark on a challenging hike to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit and immerse yourself in Chefchaouen's culture at the Ethnographic Museum.
A Day of Peaks and Culture in Chefchaouen
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the physical challenge of a mountain hike with the enriching experience of cultural immersion. Chefchaouen continues to surprise me with its diverse offerings, proving that there's more to this blue pearl than just pretty streets. From scaling a summit to delving into local history, today was a testament to the spirit of adventure and discovery that fuels my travels.
Our day began early, with a hearty breakfast at Le Coin. I opted for a simple yet satisfying Moroccan breakfast – some local bread, olives, and a strong coffee to prepare me for the hike ahead. The weather was crisp and clear, with the promise of sunshine, perfect for tackling Jebel El-Kelaa.

I made sure to pack extra water and some snacks, remembering the advice I read: no shops along the trail.
The hike up Jebel El-Kelaa was definitely a challenge, but so rewarding. The trail started with a gentle incline, gradually becoming steeper as we ascended. The views overlooking Chefchaouen were incredible, the blue hues of the town contrasting beautifully with the green of the Rif Mountains. It took us about three hours to reach the summit, with some scrambling over rocks required near the top. I was grateful for my sturdy hiking boots, a far cry from the floral design shoes I usually wear in Bonn!
Andreas, always the supportive husband, kept me motivated with his encouraging words and shared sips of water. It's moments like these that remind me how lucky I am to have him by my side on these adventures. We even saw some goats along the way, their bells tinkling in the distance, adding to the serene atmosphere. The air was fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Reaching the summit was an exhilarating experience. The panoramic views were simply breathtaking. We could see for miles in every direction, the rolling hills and valleys stretching out before us. I took dozens of photos, trying to capture the beauty of the landscape, though no picture could truly do it justice. The sense of accomplishment was immense; it's always fulfilling to push myself physically and be rewarded with such stunning vistas. After soaking in the views and enjoying a well-deserved snack, we began our descent, taking a different path down the mountain.
Back in Chefchaouen, we headed straight for Restaurant Triana for a late lunch.

I had read great reviews about their lamb tagine, and it did not disappoint. The meat was tender and flavorful, the spices perfectly balanced. Andreas opted for the seafood salad, which he declared was fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was lovely, with live music adding to the ambiance. I couldn't resist trying their cappuccino, which was indeed the best! We sat on the patio, enjoying the view of the blue city as we savored our meal. It was the perfect way to refuel after our hike.
Next on the agenda was a visit to the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen, housed in the Kasbah.

This museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the local culture and history. The exhibits showcased traditional clothing, musical instruments, and household items, providing insight into the daily lives of the people who have called this region home for centuries. I was particularly intrigued by the displays of Berber and Andalusian culture, which have both influenced the region.
The museum itself was a beautiful example of traditional Moroccan architecture, with an Andalusian-style garden providing a tranquil oasis in the middle of the city. I appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the history and traditions of this unique region. It was interesting to see how art, craft, and trade evolved in the region, and the artifacts gave a sense of the Berber, Arab, and Andalusian cultures. The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and then from 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM. The admission fee is 60 dirhams for foreign visitors.
As the day drew to a close, we decided to find a spot to enjoy the sunset. We made our way to Sunset at sunset, a bar known for its views.

I opted for a refreshing orange juice, while Andreas enjoyed a local beer. The bar had a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a busy day. The sunset was indeed spectacular, painting the sky with vibrant colors. It was the perfect way to end our day of peaks and culture.
For dinner, we chose Assaada, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine.

I decided to try the chicken tagine, while Andreas went for the kefta. Both dishes were delicious, the flavors rich and complex. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. It was a wonderful way to experience the local gastronomy.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Chefchaouen has proven to be a destination that offers something for everyone, from outdoor enthusiasts to culture seekers. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's exploration of the Blue Medina Tours and Plaza Uta el Hamman. I am also planning on buying some souvenirs at the Hibart Souvenirs Shop.
