Whispers of the Past in Mols Bjerge

Today was a day of exploration and connection, not just with the stunning landscapes of Mols Bjerge National Park, but also with the echoes of history that resonate within its hills and ancient stones. It’s amazing how a place can feel both timeless and deeply personal, offering something unique to each member of my family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Stenbækhus / mad på Mols. The cozy atmosphere and delicious, locally-sourced ingredients were the perfect way to fuel up for our adventures. I savored the freshly baked bread and homemade marmalade, while Andreas enjoyed a traditional Danish pastry. Sophie, ever the food critic, declared it the best breakfast of the trip so far. It’s these small moments, sharing good food and laughter, that make our family trips so special. Stenbækhus is a charming place, a converted farm from 1953, that prides itself on using fresh ingredients and traditional methods. You can taste the love and care in every bite, and it’s wonderful to support a local business that is so committed to sustainability and reducing food waste.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we set off for Hyllested Bjerge, eager to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Mols Bjerge. The drive itself was picturesque, with rolling hills and charming villages dotting the landscape. As we approached Hyllested Bjerge, the landscape transformed into a captivating mix of forests and open heathland. The trails were well-maintained, making it easy to navigate even with Sophie, who sometimes lags behind to capture the perfect photo. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. We opted for a moderate 2km hike, perfect for enjoying the scenery without exhausting ourselves.

The beauty of Mols Bjerge lies not just in its landscapes, but in the stories whispered by the wind through the ancient stones and rolling hills.

As we walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of tranquility wash over me. The sunlight filtered through the trees, creating dappled patterns on the forest floor. We passed ancient beech trees and juniper bushes, their gnarled branches reaching towards the sky. The area is managed as a natural forest with grazing, which adds to its charm. I imagined generations of families walking these same paths, connecting with nature in the same way we were. It’s a humbling experience to be part of such a long and continuous story.

After our invigorating hike, we were ready for lunch. We headed to Restaurant Mols Bjerge, drawn in by its reputation for delicious food and stunning views. We were not disappointed. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding hills. The menu featured a variety of Danish and international dishes, with something to please everyone. I opted for a classic smørrebrød, while Andreas chose a hearty pasta dish. Sophie, of course, went for pizza. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning adventures. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making us feel right at home.

With renewed energy, we continued our journey to Poskær Stenhus, an ancient burial site dating back to 3300 BC. As we approached the site, I was immediately struck by its imposing presence. The large stones, some taller than a person, stood in a circle around a central burial chamber. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight, a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of our ancestors. Poskær Stenhus is Denmark's largest round barrow, a place where history and mystery intertwine.

We walked around the stone circle, marveling at the sheer size and weight of the stones. It's hard to imagine how people in the Stone Age managed to transport and erect these massive monuments. The central burial chamber was particularly fascinating, with its capstone weighing 11 tons. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to participate in the burial rituals that took place here thousands of years ago. The site exuded a sense of reverence and connection to the past. According to historical accounts, in 1859, a landowner attempted to dynamite the stones for building material, but local officials intervened to protect the site.

Sophie was particularly intrigued by the story of Poskær Stenhus. She peppered me with questions about the people who built it, their beliefs, and their way of life. It was a wonderful opportunity to teach her about history and archaeology, and to spark her curiosity about the world around her. We explored the area, reading the informative plaques that detailed the history and significance of Poskær Stenhus. It’s a place where you can truly connect with Denmark's rich archaeological heritage while enjoying the great outdoors.

Before heading back, we made a stop at Karpenhøj Naturcenter, a nature center located in the heart of Mols Bjerge. The center offers a variety of activities and exhibits, all designed to promote an appreciation for nature and sustainable living. We explored the center's gardens, admired the local flora and fauna, and learned about the park's conservation efforts. Karpenhøj Naturcenter is a fantastic starting point for trips in the national park. It’s a place where you can rent sea kayaks, mountain bikes, and other outdoor equipment. They also offer guided tours and workshops, making it a great place to learn more about the natural world.

We browsed the shop, picking up a few souvenirs to remind us of our visit. I bought a small book about the history of Mols Bjerge, while Andreas chose a handcrafted wooden bird feeder. Sophie, of course, opted for a bag of locally made candy. Karpenhøj Naturcenter is open year-round, with activities adapted to the changing seasons. It’s a place where you can experience the beauty of nature in all its forms. They offer guided tours and events with skilled nature guides.

For dinner, we decided to try MolsCafeen, a local eatery known for its traditional Danish cuisine. The cafe had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with friendly staff and a menu full of hearty dishes. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration and adventure. I savored every bite, knowing that these moments of togetherness and discovery are what truly make our family trips so memorable.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the incredible experiences we had shared. From hiking through the rolling hills of Hyllested Bjerge to exploring the ancient stones of Poskær Stenhus, we had immersed ourselves in the natural beauty and rich history of Mols Bjerge. It was a day that will stay with us for a long time to come.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Helgenæs and Sletterhage Fyr, hoping to discover more hidden gems in this beautiful corner of Denmark. Perhaps we'll even stop by Molskroen Strandhotel og Molskroens Brasserie for a drink in the evening. I am also looking forward to trying Restaurant Moment for breakfast.

Until then, goodnight from Mols Bjerge.
