Exploring Helgenæs: A Day of History, Nature, and Gastronomy
Today was a day of exploration and indulgence as we ventured out to the Helgenæs peninsula. I was excited to discover the blend of history, stunning landscapes, and culinary delights that this corner of Mols Bjerge National Park had to offer. With Andreas and Sophie in tow, we set out, ready to immerse ourselves in the beauty and tranquility of the Danish countryside.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Moment. It’s always a treat to start the day with their thoughtfully prepared dishes. The restaurant's commitment to sustainable gastronomy and local ingredients always resonates with me, reminding me of my own passion for gardening and sustainable living. After breakfast, we made our way towards Helgenæs, eager to explore its coastal charm.
Driving through the rolling hills of Mols Bjerge is always a pleasure. The landscape is so soothing, and it feels a world away from our busy lives in Bonn. I couldn’t help but think how much Sophie would enjoy a bike ride here; it’s something we’ll definitely have to do on our next visit. The fresh air and open spaces are a welcome change, and I found myself feeling more relaxed with each passing mile. As we approached Helgenæs, the views of the Kattegat Sea became more and more captivating.

Sletterhage Fyr: A Beacon of History
Our first stop was Sletterhage Fyr, the historic lighthouse on the southern tip of Helgenæs. The lighthouse, built in 1894, stands as a testament to the region's maritime heritage. We climbed to the top, and the panoramic views were simply breathtaking. The vast expanse of the sea, the rugged coastline, and the distant islands created a stunning tableau. I could imagine the countless ships that had been guided safely by this beacon over the years.

Inside the lighthouse, we explored the informative displays that narrate its history and role in maritime navigation. It was fascinating to learn about the evolution of lighthouses and the technology used to guide ships through these waters. Sophie, in particular, was intrigued by the geological exhibition, which explained how the Helgenæs landscape was formed during the ice age.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of places, where history and nature intertwine to create something truly unforgettable.
After exploring the lighthouse, we took a leisurely stroll along the coastline. The sandy beaches and lush landscapes invited relaxation, and we spent some time simply enjoying the tranquility of the setting. Andreas, ever the history enthusiast, pointed out the Tyskertårnet, a concrete watchtower built during the German occupation in World War II. We walked along the path towards it, discussing the historical significance of the site and the impact of the war on this peaceful region.
The area around Sletterhage Fyr is perfect for photography, and I couldn't resist capturing the stunning scenery. The way the sunlight reflected off the sea, the textures of the rocks, and the silhouette of the lighthouse against the sky all provided endless opportunities for beautiful shots. I made a mental note to bring my ভালো camera next time, as my phone just couldn't do justice to the beauty of the landscape.
Lunch at Restaurant Mols Bjerge
By lunchtime, we were all feeling quite peckish, so we headed to Restaurant Mols Bjerge for a satisfying meal. This restaurant feels like an authentic Italian eatery, and the outdoor seating was particularly inviting on this lovely day. We sat down and enjoyed some delicious pizzas and pasta, while soaking in the relaxed atmosphere. The service was friendly and efficient, and the food was simply delightful.

I appreciated the restaurant's focus on fresh, local ingredients, which added to the overall quality of the meal. Sophie, who is usually quite picky, devoured her pizza Margherita with gusto. It’s always a win when we find a place that everyone enjoys. Andreas and I shared a bottle of local beer, which was the perfect accompaniment to our lunch.
Exploring Helgenæs Further
After lunch, we decided to explore more of Helgenæs. We drove towards the northern part of the peninsula, passing through charming villages and picturesque landscapes. The area is known for its rolling hills and accessible coastline, making it a popular spot for summer rentals. I could see why; the mild summer climate and stunning views make it an ideal place for a relaxing getaway.
We stopped at a few viewpoints along the way, taking in the panoramic vistas of the Kattegat Sea. The views from Ellemandsbjerg were particularly impressive, offering a sweeping perspective of the coastline and the surrounding area. I imagined what it must have been like for General Rye to hold up the attacking force from this very spot during the Schleswig Wars.
As we drove, we noticed several small, unmanned stands selling local produce and crafts. It’s heartwarming to see this kind of community spirit and trust. We stopped at one and bought some fresh berries, leaving payment in the honesty box. It’s these little moments that make traveling so special, reminding me of the goodness and integrity of people.
Dinner at Stenbækhus / mad på Mols
For dinner, we had made reservations at Stenbækhus / mad på Mols, a restaurant known for its commitment to fresh, seasonal ingredients and traditional Danish cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and we were warmly greeted by the staff. We chose a table in the charming courtyard, which was adorned with flowers and twinkling lights.

The menu featured a variety of dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, reflecting the season's offerings. I opted for the fish of the day, while Andreas chose the roasted pork. Sophie, always adventurous, decided to try the traditional Danish meatballs. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor.
I was particularly impressed by the restaurant's focus on minimizing food waste, utilizing every part of the ingredients to create delicious and sustainable meals. It’s a philosophy that aligns perfectly with my own values, and it was inspiring to see it put into practice. The meal was a true culinary delight, and we savored every bite.
