Kyoto's Hidden Gems: A Day of Serenity and Discovery

Today was a beautiful blend of tradition, tranquility, and artistic expression. Wandering through Kyoto with Hans, I felt a deeper connection to the city's soul. It's amazing how each day here unveils a new layer of its rich tapestry, leaving me utterly enchanted. Today was no exception, filled with unexpected delights and serene moments that I'll treasure forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hanasaki. The restaurant was a delightful mix of traditional and modern, and the food was simply divine. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and an assortment of small, flavorful dishes. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. Hans, ever the adventurous one, tried the local Kyoto-style breakfast and loved it. I am so glad we chose to dine here, as it prepared us well for the day ahead.

Our first stop was the Kyoto Ebisu Shrine. Stepping into the shrine, I immediately felt a sense of peace wash over me. The air was filled with the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft murmur of prayers. The shrine itself was beautiful, adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant colors. I learned that Ebisu is one of the Seven Lucky Gods, revered as the god of fishermen and commerce. Given my love for finding hidden gems and Hans' knack for securing the best deals, it felt like the perfect place to start our day.

I found myself particularly drawn to the *fukuzasa*, the lucky bamboo branches adorned with various charms. The shrine maidens, with their graceful movements and serene smiles, added to the mystical ambiance. We watched as they performed the Kagura dance, a ritual dance to bless the bamboo branches. It was mesmerizing, a blend of ancient tradition and spiritual devotion. I even tried my luck at rapping my knuckles against the wooden panel at the back of the shrine, a local custom to ensure Ebisu hears your wishes. Hopefully, Ebisu heard my wish for continued adventures and good fortune on our journey!

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of a city, where tradition whispers and beauty unfolds.

Next on our itinerary was the Gion Shinbashi Bridge. As we strolled through the Gion district, the atmosphere shifted, becoming more refined and elegant. The traditional wooden machiya houses lined the streets, their warm glow casting a magical spell. I could almost imagine geishas gracefully gliding through the narrow lanes, their silk kimonos rustling softly in the breeze.

Reaching the bridge, I was struck by its simple yet profound beauty. The Gion Shinbashi Bridge is more than just a crossing; it's a serene escape into the heart of traditional Japan. The gentle sounds of the Shirakawa Canal flowing beneath, the sight of the meticulously preserved machiya houses, and the overall ambiance transported me to another era. Hans, with his ever-present camera, was in his element, capturing the picturesque scenery from every angle. I simply stood there, soaking in the tranquility and appreciating the timeless beauty of Kyoto.

The bridge is a testament to Kyoto's efforts to preserve its historical and cultural heritage. Knowing that geiko and maiko frequent this area, especially in the evenings, added an extra layer of intrigue. Although we didn't spot any during our visit, the thought of their presence lingered in the air, adding to the mystique of the surroundings. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the beauty and grace of Japanese culture.

Our afternoon was dedicated to the Kyoto Shibori Museum, and what a treat it was! I've always been fascinated by textiles and the intricate processes involved in creating them. The Shibori Museum was a deep dive into the world of Japanese tie-dye, showcasing the artistry and skill of the craftspeople who have perfected this technique over centuries. The museum is the only one in Japan specializing in tie-dye, and it was fascinating to learn about the 1,300-year history of *shibori*.

The exhibits were stunning, displaying a range of *shibori* techniques from the simple to the incredibly complex. I was particularly captivated by the *itajime shibori* and *kyo-arashi shibori* methods, each producing unique and mesmerizing patterns. It was amazing to see how fabric could be transformed into works of art through folding, clamping, and dyeing.

I even participated in a *shibori* workshop, where I learned the basics of the craft. Under the guidance of a skilled instructor, I created my own tie-dyed scarf. It was challenging but incredibly rewarding to see my own creation come to life. Hans, surprisingly, also enjoyed the workshop, meticulously folding and clamping his fabric with surprising precision. I think he might have found a new hobby!

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Rocking Bar ING. After a day steeped in tradition and artistry, it was time for something a bit more… energetic. This bar was recommended to us by friends, and it turned out to be exactly what we needed. Tucked away in a building on Kiyamachi, Rocking Bar ING is a haven for music lovers. The owner, Hako, is a true music fanatic, with an impressive collection of rock records spanning from the 1960s to the 1990s. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with well-worn wooden tables and soft lighting. As soon as we stepped inside, we were enveloped in the sounds of classic rock.

Hako has a knack for remembering everyone's name and music preferences. We requested some of our favorite tunes, and he happily obliged, spinning vinyl records with infectious enthusiasm. I even heard some Brazilian rock classics that reminded me of home, a pleasant surprise in the heart of Kyoto. The bar was filled with locals and tourists alike, all sharing a love for good music and good company. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. This place is definitely more than just a bar; it’s a place where memories are made, friendships are forged, and the spirit of rock and roll lives on.

For dinner, we decided to indulge in a traditional Kaiseki experience at Kinmata. This restaurant, established in 1801, is housed in a beautifully preserved *kyomachiya* (traditional Kyoto tradesman's house) that is registered as a tangible cultural asset. The ambiance was refined and elegant, with tatami mats, shoji screens, and exquisite floral arrangements. It felt like stepping back in time.

The Kaiseki cuisine was a culinary journey, showcasing the freshest seafood and vegetables in a series of meticulously prepared dishes. Each course was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. From the delicate sashimi to the savory grilled fish, every bite was a celebration of Japanese culinary traditions. Hans and I opted for the traditional Kaiseki course, which focused on fish and vegetables. It was a truly memorable dining experience, a perfect ending to a perfect day.

As I reflect on today, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto's beauty and culture. From the blessings at Ebisu Shrine to the tranquility of Gion Shinbashi Bridge, the artistry of the Shibori Museum, the energy of Rocking Bar ING and the elegance of Kinmata, every moment was a gift. Tomorrow, we are off to explore Higashiyama Jisho-ji, Ryoan-ji, and Ninna-ji Temple. I can't wait to see what new adventures await us!

I am so grateful to be sharing this adventure with Hans. His enthusiasm and adventurous spirit make every day even more special. I am also grateful for the chance to share my experiences with you, my readers. I hope that my words and photos inspire you to explore the world and discover the beauty that lies within every culture. Until tomorrow!
