Kyoto, Until We Meet Again

As our two-week adventure in Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. It's hard to believe that our time here is already ending. Today was all about soaking in those final moments, revisiting some favorite spots, and discovering a few hidden gems before we bid farewell to this enchanting city.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Anzukko near Kyoto Station. This cozy spot is known for its inventive gyoza, and it was the perfect way to fuel up for our last day of exploration. Hans and I shared a plate of their signature gyoza, savoring each bite as we reminisced about our favorite culinary experiences in Kyoto. I am happy to have discovered this spot, as I am a big fan of gyoza, and I am always on the lookout for new gyoza spots in Heidelberg.

After breakfast, we headed to Kyoto Station's Daikaidan, or Great Staircase. This architectural marvel is not just a functional part of the station; it's a destination in itself. The staircase is known for its seasonal illuminations, and today, it was adorned with vibrant colors that reflected the energy of the city. Climbing the 171 steps, we were rewarded with panoramic views of Kyoto, a perfect vantage point to appreciate the blend of modern and traditional elements that define this beautiful city. I was particularly impressed by the intricate details of the staircase's design, a testament to Kyoto's innovative spirit. It reminded me a bit of the Heidelberg Castle stairs, though those are much older, of course!

The end of a journey is just the beginning of a collection of memories that will last a lifetime.

Next on our itinerary was the Kyoto Theater, located within the station complex. While we didn't have time to catch a performance, we admired the theater's architecture and the vibrant atmosphere surrounding it. It's a hub of cultural activity, showcasing a variety of performances that reflect Kyoto's rich artistic heritage. Perhaps on our next visit, we can catch a Kabuki show at the Minamiza Theatre.

From the bustling station, we sought tranquility at the Kamogawa Delta, a serene parkland where the Kamo and Takano Rivers meet. This spot is a favorite among locals and travelers alike, offering a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. We strolled along the riverbank, enjoying the gentle breeze and the picturesque scenery. The delta is known for its turtle-shaped stepping stones, which we carefully crossed, feeling like kids again. It was the perfect place to reflect on our journey and appreciate the natural beauty of Kyoto. I remember when Hans and I went hiking in Odenwald Forest near Heidelberg, and we found a similar spot by the river. Nature always provides the best moments of reflection.

For lunch, we ventured to Yasakadori Enraku, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine. We indulged in a multi-course meal featuring local specialties, each dish a work of art. The flavors were delicate and refined, showcasing the culinary expertise that Kyoto is famous for. It was a fitting culinary farewell to the city, a reminder of the delicious food we had enjoyed throughout our stay. The Oden hotpot was especially delicious, and Hans enjoyed the sake.

Our final stop of the day was Omiyage Kaido, also known as Souvenir Road, within Kyoto Station. This bustling marketplace is a treasure trove of local crafts, sweets, and souvenirs, the perfect place to pick up some last-minute gifts for our friends and family back home in Germany. I chose some Kiyomizu pottery and Yatsuhashi sweets, hoping to share a taste of Kyoto with our loved ones. It was fun navigating the crowds and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the marketplace. Omiyage Kaido had everything we needed and more!

For our last dinner in Kyoto, we chose Tategami, a restaurant known for its Kaiseki cuisine. The restaurant itself was beautiful, and the service was impeccable. Each course was presented like a work of art, and the flavors were both subtle and complex. It was a truly memorable dining experience, and the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Kyoto.
