Day 7: A Day Immersed in Fes: Ancient Knowledge, Vibrant Markets, and Culinary Delights
Exploring Fes: From the oldest university to bustling souks and savory tajines, discover the heart and soul of Moroccan culture.
Fez's Timeless Charms
Today was a deep dive into the heart of Fes, a city that pulses with history and tradition. From exploring the hallowed halls of the world's oldest university to getting lost in the vibrant chaos of the souks, and finally, savoring the exquisite flavors of Moroccan cuisine, it was a day that truly awakened the senses. The city unfolded before me like a living tapestry, each thread woven with stories of the past and the vibrant energy of the present.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Maison Bleue. The setting itself was like stepping back in time, with its traditional Moroccan décor and serene atmosphere. I savored every bite, knowing that we had a full day of exploration ahead. The breakfast buffet was delightful, offering a wide array of options. The hotel felt like home away from home. The staff was incredibly hospitable, making our experience even more special.
Our first stop was the Mosque and University Kairaouine. Founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, it’s considered the oldest continuously operating university in the world. I was in awe, imagining the countless scholars who had walked these halls over the centuries. Although non-Muslims can't enter the prayer area, I was able to explore the courtyard and admire the intricate architecture. The sense of history was palpable, and I felt a deep connection to the pursuit of knowledge that has been ongoing here for over a thousand years. It's mind-blowing to think that this institution predates many of the universities I learned about back in Brazil! I remember studying about the evolution of universities, never imagining I'd stand where it all began.

To walk through Fes is to walk through time, each stone whispering tales of scholars, artisans, and sultans.
Next, we ventured into the Henna Souk. This marketplace is one of the oldest in the Medina, and it’s a feast for the senses. The air was filled with the aroma of spices and the vibrant colors of pottery and traditional cosmetics. I watched as women had intricate henna patterns applied to their hands, a beautiful tradition that has been passed down through generations. I picked up a small, hand-painted tagine as a souvenir, a reminder of the artistry and skill of the Fassi artisans. Hans was particularly fascinated by the natural cosmetics, learning about the various uses of argan oil and kohl. He even considered getting a henna tattoo, but decided against it at the last minute, much to my amusement!

Wandering through the Henna Souk, I was struck by the friendliness of the stallholders. They were eager to share their knowledge of the natural products they sold, offering insights into Moroccan beauty rituals. It was a welcome change from the sometimes-pushy vendors in other parts of the Medina. The pottery here is known for its quality, crafted from local gray clay that's fired at volcanic temperatures, making it incredibly durable. I learned that the pottery is still painted by hand, often featuring traditional patterns like the tomato flower and Berber motifs.
From the Henna Souk, we made our way to Place Rcif, a large public square in the heart of the Medina. This bustling square is a hub of activity, with locals and tourists alike gathering to socialize, shop, and simply watch the world go by. I sat at a café, sipping mint tea and soaking in the atmosphere. The square offers a clear view of the minaret, adorned with green faience, making it a recognizable landmark.

For lunch, we indulged in a culinary experience at Restaurant Palais Lahlou. The restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored palace, with intricate tilework and a tranquil ambiance. We savored traditional Moroccan dishes, including lemon chicken, couscous salads, and, of course, a flavorful tagine. The service was impeccable, and the staff was eager to share the history and traditions behind each dish. I remember when Hans and I first moved to Heidelberg, we tried to recreate some Brazilian dishes for our German friends. It was a disaster! We quickly learned that using local ingredients is key to authentic flavors.

In the evening, after a long day of exploring, we decided to unwind at Empire bar. While the reviews online were mixed, we were drawn in by the promise of a relaxed atmosphere and a chance to reflect on our day. We enjoyed a couple of drinks, chatting about our favorite moments and planning our adventures for tomorrow. I made a mental note to pick up an adapter for Moroccan outlets tomorrow, as I completely forgot to pack one!

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Les Mystères de Dar Tajine for dinner. This restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan gastronomy and charming atmosphere. We shared a delicious tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices. The staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel like honored guests in their home. The fine decor and relaxed ambiance made it the perfect place to end our day. The restaurant itself is beautiful. The prices are also reasonable. It was such a perfect way to cap off a day full of exploration and discovery. I felt completely immersed in the culture and history of Fes.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Andalusian Mosque, Borj Sud, and Bab Chems. I'm particularly excited to see Borj Sud, as I've heard it offers panoramic views of the city. We'll also be stopping by Fes Antiques, a shop that I'm sure will be filled with treasures. I'm hoping to find a beautiful Berber rug to take back to Heidelberg. I might even try my hand at bargaining – something I'm not particularly good at, but always find amusing!
As I reflect on today, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of Fes. This city has a way of captivating your heart and soul, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. It's a place where the past and present intertwine, creating a unique and unforgettable travel experience. And I am so grateful to be sharing it with my friends and Hans.
