Fes el Jdid Unveiled
Today was a day of venturing into the heart of Fes el Jdid, the 'New Fes,' a city brimming with history and architectural wonders. Leaving behind the familiar comfort of our riad, we were ready to immerse ourselves in the stories etched into every gate, plaza, and bustling street. The air was filled with the scent of spices and the echoes of daily life, a symphony that only Fes could compose.
Our exploration began with a hearty breakfast at Nagham Cafe. The terrace offered a stunning view of Bab Boujloud. It was a delightful way to fuel up for the day's adventures. I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast with mint tea, and Hans had some coffee. The food was delicious and set a positive tone for the day ahead. The cafe was near the iconic Bab Boujloud, also known as the Blue Gate, which was part of the unique culture of the city.

The soul of a city is found not only in its grand monuments, but in the everyday lives that unfold within its walls.
First on our itinerary was the majestic Bab Boujloud, the main entrance to Fes el Bali. This gate, with its striking blue façade on one side and green on the other, is more than just a portal; it's a symbol of Fes itself. The intricate tilework and Moorish architecture were breathtaking, a testament to the city's rich artistic heritage. As we passed through its arches, we were immediately enveloped in the vibrant atmosphere of the medina. The sounds of vendors, the scent of spices, and the kaleidoscope of colors created an intoxicating sensory experience.

Next, we ventured towards Bab Makina Plaza, a vast stone square that once served as a military parade ground. The sheer scale of the plaza was impressive, surrounded by high stone walls and imposing towers. I could almost picture the grand ceremonies and historical events that had unfolded within its confines. Today, it was a tranquil space, offering a respite from the bustling streets of Fes el Jdid. We took some time to wander around, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago, when the plaza was the center of power and spectacle.

From Bab Makina Plaza, we delved deeper into Fes el Jdid, exploring its labyrinthine streets and hidden corners. This part of Fes, founded in the 13th century by the Marinid dynasty, offers a fascinating contrast to the older Fes el Bali. We wandered through the Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, with its distinct architecture and poignant history. The buildings here had a unique character, with wrought iron balconies and open facades, a departure from the more private designs in the Muslim areas. It was a reminder of the diverse communities that have shaped Fes over the centuries.
For lunch, we stopped at Chez Hakim, a local restaurant known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of tagines were incredibly inviting. I ordered the chicken couscous, while Hans opted for the harira soup. The flavors were rich and authentic, a true taste of Moroccan culinary heritage. As we savored our meal, we chatted with the friendly staff, who shared stories about the restaurant and the history of the area. I had to be careful with what I ate, given my sensitive stomach.

In the afternoon, we dedicated time to shopping at the Cooperative Artisanal de Fes. I wanted to find some authentic Moroccan crafts to bring back home. The cooperative offered a wide array of goods, from colorful ceramics to intricately woven carpets. I was particularly drawn to the leather goods and the detailed woodwork. It was great to know that the cooperative supports local artisans, providing them with a fair platform to sell their creations. I ended up buying a beautiful leather handbag and a small ceramic tagine as souvenirs.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Darori for dinner. This restaurant, nestled in a beautifully restored riad, promised an authentic Fassi dining experience. The ambiance was enchanting, with intricate tilework, soft lighting, and traditional Moroccan music. The menu featured a range of Fassi specialties, and we decided to try the pastilla and the lamb tagine. Each dish was a masterpiece, bursting with flavors and textures that danced on our palates. The service was impeccable, making us feel like honored guests in a private home.

After dinner, as we strolled back to our riad, I reflected on the day's adventures. Fes el Jdid had captivated me with its blend of history, culture, and architectural grandeur. Each gate, plaza, and street had a story to tell, and I felt privileged to have experienced a small part of its rich tapestry. The day was a bit tiring, but it was worth it. I made sure to rehydrate and take some medicine to prevent any stomach issues.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Mosque and University Kairaouine, the Henna Souk, and Place Rcif. I am particularly excited about visiting the Kairaouine University, one of the oldest universities in the world. Before that, we will have breakfast at La Maison Bleue. And in the evening, we might check out Empire bar for a drink, before having dinner at Les Mystères de Dar Tajine. I am looking forward to another day of discovery in this fascinating city.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of Fes. It's a city that truly awakens the senses and nourishes the soul, leaving an indelible mark on all who wander through its ancient streets.
