Fes: Where History Whispers and Flavors Dance

Today was a deep dive into the heart and soul of Fes. Leaving the familiar comforts of Heidelberg behind, I've found myself captivated by the intricate tapestry of Moroccan culture, a world away from my daily routine as a geriatric nurse. Each day here is a new adventure, and today was no exception.

Our first stop was the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II, a place of profound spiritual significance. Though as non-Muslims, Hans and I couldn't enter the shrine itself, just being in the vicinity was a powerful experience. The reverence in the air was palpable, a reminder of the deep faith that permeates every corner of this city. I learned that Moulay Idriss II is considered the founder of Fes, and his mausoleum is one of the holiest sites in Morocco. The intricate details of the architecture, even from the outside, were mesmerizing, a testament to the artistry and devotion of those who built it.

The streets around the mausoleum were bustling with activity. I noticed wooden bars above head height, meant to keep animals out of the sacred area, a quirky detail that added to the unique atmosphere. It's fascinating how religion and daily life intertwine so seamlessly here. I couldn't help but think of my patients back in Heidelberg, and how their faith often provides them with strength and comfort. This experience has given me a new perspective on the importance of spiritual well-being.

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

Next, we plunged into the labyrinthine world of Fes El Bali, the old city. What an experience! Imagine thousands of narrow alleyways, a maze of shops, workshops, mosques, and madrasas all packed together. The energy was intense, a vibrant mix of sounds, smells, and sights. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the orderly streets of Heidelberg. I was grateful to have my friends with me as we navigated the bustling souks, each turn revealing something new and exciting.

The architecture was simply breathtaking. We saw stunning examples of zellige tilework, carved wooden ceilings, and sculpted plasterwork. Every corner seemed to hold a piece of history, a story waiting to be discovered. Fes El Bali is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it's easy to see why. It's a living, breathing museum, a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Morocco.

After hours of exploring, we were ready for a break, and lunch at Le Tarbouche was just what we needed. This petite eatery was bustling with tourists enjoying Fassi favorites. I tried the vegetable pastilla, and it was delicious. The cooked Moroccan salads were the real highlight, a delightful mix of flavors and textures. It reminded me of cooking Brazilian dishes back home, always experimenting with local ingredients to create something new and exciting.

In the afternoon, we visited the Dar Batha Museum, housed in a beautiful 19th-century palace. The museum is a treasure trove of Moroccan arts and crafts, with collections of ceramics, textiles, woodwork, and traditional musical instruments. I was particularly fascinated by the exhibits of Fassi embroidery, the intricate designs and vibrant colors showcasing the skill of Moroccan artisans.

The museum also had a stunning Andalusian garden, a serene oasis where we could relax and soak in the beauty of our surroundings. It was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the medina. As I strolled through the garden, I reflected on the similarities between Moroccan and Brazilian culture – the love of family, the importance of tradition, and the vibrant artistic expression.

Dinner at Restaurant Dar Hatim was an unforgettable experience. This family-run restaurant is located in a beautifully decorated home in the Mellah, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We opted for one of the prix fixe menus. We started with Moroccan salads, followed by lamb tagine. The meal ended with Moroccan pastries and ice cream. It was the best meal I've had in Fes so far, a true taste of Moroccan hospitality.

Our final stop for the day was Mezzanine, a bar in the Ville Nouvelle. It was a nice change of pace from the traditional Medina. We enjoyed some drinks and tapas on the terrace, listening to live music. It was a perfect way to end a day of spiritual discovery and cultural immersion.

As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible experience. Fes is a city that challenges and inspires, a place where the past and present coexist in a vibrant tapestry of culture and tradition. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, as we plan to visit Jnan Sbil, the Aben Danan Synagogue, and the Mellah. It's hard to believe that our trip is already nearing its end; time really does fly when you're having an adventure.

I'm also trying to remember to buy an adapter for Moroccan outlets, as I completely forgot to pack one. It's a small thing, but it would make life a lot easier! And perhaps an umbrella, as the weather can be unpredictable. I'm learning that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about adapting to new situations and embracing the unexpected.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the serene Jnan Sbil gardens, a welcome escape from the bustling medina. We'll also delve into the Jewish heritage of Fes with a visit to the Aben Danan Synagogue and the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. I'm particularly interested in learning more about the history of the Jewish community in Fes and their contributions to the city's cultural fabric. And of course, we'll be indulging in more delicious Moroccan cuisine, with dinner at Eden at Palais Amani. I've heard wonderful things about their refined Moroccan dishes and stunning setting. Plus, I'm hoping to pick up some beautiful mosaics at Mosaique Et Poterie De Fes. I can't wait to see what treasures I'll find!

Tonight, though, I'll sleep soundly, dreaming of the sights, sounds, and flavors of Fes. This journey with my friends is turning out to be everything I hoped for and more. It's a reminder that life is an adventure, and that there's always something new to discover, no matter where you are in the world.
