Fes Unveiled: A Day of Tranquility and Hidden Histories

After two days navigating the exhilarating chaos of the Fes Medina, I was ready for a change of pace. Today promised a blend of serene landscapes, poignant history, and a touch of retail therapy. It was a day to delve deeper into the soul of Fes, away from the bustling crowds, and to uncover some of its hidden gems. I was excited to see what new stories this ancient city had to tell.

Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Les Jardins de Sheherazade. The setting was magical, a true oasis within the Medina. Sipping on strong Moroccan coffee amidst the lush greenery, I felt a world away from the bustling streets outside. The traditional Moroccan pastries were a delightful start to the day, fueling us for our explorations. It was the perfect way to ease into the day, savoring the tranquility before diving back into the vibrant energy of Fes.

With our appetites sated, we set off to Jnan Sbil, a sprawling garden that offered a welcome respite from the city's intensity. As we strolled through the meticulously manicured pathways, the air was filled with the sweet scent of orange blossoms and the gentle murmur of fountains. It was fascinating to learn that these gardens, over a century old, had been recently revitalized. The gardens truly felt like a breath of fresh air, a literal breath of fresh air just when you need it most.

I was particularly captivated by the diverse collection of plants from around the world. We wandered through bamboo forests, admired exotic flowers, and paused by tranquil ponds filled with colorful fish. It was a sensory feast, a reminder of the beauty and diversity of nature, even within the heart of a bustling city. Hans would have loved this part of the day, but he is not with me on this trip.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are made in the quietest of places.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the Aben Danan Synagogue, nestled in the heart of the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. The Mellah itself is a step back in time, with its narrow streets and distinctive architecture. It dates back to 1438 and is considered the oldest quarter reserved for Moroccans of the Jewish faith. As we approached the synagogue, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence, knowing that this was a place of deep historical and cultural significance.

The synagogue is hidden behind a tiny door with no distinguishing marks, similar to those of the houses around it. Stepping inside the Aben Danan Synagogue felt like entering another world. The synagogue dates back to the 17th century and was built by Mimoun Ben Sidan, a merchant from a neighboring village. The interior was a beautiful blend of Moroccan and Jewish design, with intricate tile work, carved wooden ceilings, and a serene courtyard. The large Torah Ark, a cupboard filling the width of an entire wall, is made of carved wood.

Learning about the history of the synagogue was particularly moving. It had been restored in 1999 with funding from American Express and in collaboration with Morocco's Ministry of Culture and the Judeo-Moroccan Cultural Heritage Foundation. It served as a reminder of the once-thriving Jewish community in Fes and the importance of preserving cultural heritage. It was fascinating to learn about the efforts to preserve this hidden gem and the stories of the families who had worshipped within its walls for generations. The Mellah of Fez is considered to be the oldest quarter reserved for Moroccans of the Jewish faith. It was a poignant reminder of the complex history of Fes and the diverse communities that have shaped its identity.

After the synagogue, we wandered through the Mellah, soaking in the atmosphere of this historic neighborhood. The Mellah was established in 1438 after the Sephardic expulsion from Andalusia. The architecture was noticeably different from the rest of the Medina, with balconies and open courtyards, a testament to the unique cultural heritage of the Jewish community. The Mellah is being extensively renovated and enhanced in line with His Majesty Mohammed VI's commitment to preserving the Hebraic component of the national identity.

I couldn't resist the urge to do a little shopping, so we stopped at Mosaique Et Poterie De Fes, a workshop where local artisans create exquisite mosaics and pottery. It was fascinating to watch them at work, their hands moving with incredible skill and precision. I ended up purchasing a beautiful mosaic tile, a tangible reminder of the artistry and craftsmanship of Fes. The kids would have loved this activity. It would be great for families.

The start time was flexible and coordinated with the guide. The cooperative were extremely gracious and gave a really fun, engaging, and hands-on look at Moroccan pottery and Mosaic production. It was a lot of fun for both adults and kids.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Dar Roumana for a late lunch. This charming riad offered a tranquil escape from the bustling streets, with its peaceful courtyard and stunning views of the Atlas Mountains. The property is exquisitely beautiful, comfortable and so very accommodating. The food was divine and the staff perfect. The atmosphere aims to be more home, less hotel.

The food was a delicious fusion of Moroccan and European flavors, a testament to the city's diverse culinary influences. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration, savoring the flavors of Fes in a truly magical setting. The property is a 13-minute drive from the center of Fès and 2.5 mi from the train station.

Finally, for dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to a special evening at Eden at Palais Amani. The courtyard garden, lit by lanterns and filled with the sound of trickling water, created a magical ambiance. The menu was a celebration of Moroccan cuisine, with a modern twist. The courtyard garden takes on a new dimension. The menu is traditional, beginning with choices of Moroccan salads, soups, and the most extraordinary Chicken Pastilla with almonds.

I opted for the tagine, a slow-cooked stew of tender lamb and fragrant spices, while my friends chose the couscous, a fluffy grain served with a medley of vegetables and meats. Each dish was a masterpiece, a testament to the culinary artistry of Fes. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was simply enchanting. It was the perfect way to celebrate our day of discovery and to toast to the magic of Fes. The easiest way is to get a Petit Taxi to the Oued Zhoune car park.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Borj Nord Museum, Viewpoint Medina, and Merinide Necropole. After that, we'll end the day with drinks at Rooftop Nour Plazza. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us!

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am struck by the layers of history and culture that permeate every corner of Fes. It is a city that rewards exploration, a place where hidden gems are waiting to be discovered around every turn. It is a city that stays with you long after you have left its ancient walls. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical city with my friends and to share these stories with you. Stay tuned for more adventures from Fes! I hope to provide a better experience in the future.
