Exploring the Cultural Wonders of Chiang Mai
Day 10: A Final Day of Discovery: Chiang Mai's Gates, Temples, and Unexpected Treasures
Exploring Chiang Mai's historic gates, serene temples, and quirky shops, a perfect end to a memorable solo journey in Thailand.
Farewell, Chiang Mai!
As my incredible ten-day journey through Chiang Mai draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the countless memories I've made, the delicious food I've tasted, and the amazing people I've met. Today was all about soaking up the last bits of this beautiful city, from exploring ancient gates and temples to indulging in some unique shopping experiences. It's funny how a place can feel like home in such a short amount of time. I am already looking forward to coming back with Hans, and showing him all of the beautiful places I discovered!
My final day in Chiang Mai began with a delightful breakfast at Jarid Thai Food | Fine Wines. The hotel recommended it, and it was the perfect way to start the day. The restaurant had a very stylish ambiance, and the dishes were meticulously crafted with a unique twist. I started with the Miang Kham Sai Mai, which was a burst of Chiang Mai flavors in one bite. It was so delicious, I savored every moment of the meal, knowing it was my last official Thai breakfast for a while. I will definitely try to recreate that back in Heidelberg!
With a full stomach and a happy heart, I set out to explore the ancient city gates. First on my list was Tha Phae Gate, the eastern gateway to Chiang Mai's heart. It was like stepping back in time. I learned that historically, this was the main entrance to the city, bustling with traders, monks, and diplomats. Today, it's a vibrant hub for cultural activities and festivals.

I strolled through the gate, imagining the countless people who had passed through it over the centuries. It's amazing how well-preserved these historical sites are. The open square in front of the gate was alive with activity, and I could easily picture the lantern-lighting ceremonies during Loy Krathong or the water fights at Songkran. I took some photos, trying to capture the essence of this iconic landmark. Apparently, they are preparing for the Chiang Mai Countdown 2025 at Tha Pae Gate, so I'm sure the area will be alive with activity very soon!
Next, I headed north to Chang Phueak Gate, also known as the White Elephant Gate. I discovered that this gate served as the city's main northern entrance, and its name comes from the revered white elephants, symbols of royal power in Thai culture. As I walked through the gate, I could almost hear the echoes of royal processions from centuries past.

Sometimes, the most unexpected detours lead to the most unforgettable discoveries.
It was fascinating to learn about the history of these gates and their significance in Chiang Mai's urban fabric. I also found a small shrine inside the gate where locals were paying their respects, a hidden gem that most tourists probably miss. It's these little moments of cultural immersion that I truly cherish.
By this time, my stomach was starting to rumble again, so I decided to grab some lunch. I stopped by Eing Restaurant, which was conveniently located near the gates. The reviews I had read online were promising, and I was eager to try some authentic Northern Thai cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly friendly. I ordered the Khao Soi, a signature Chiang Mai dish, and it did not disappoint! The creamy coconut curry broth was rich and flavorful, and the tender noodles were perfectly cooked. It was the perfect midday treat.

After lunch, I wanted to explore a temple that was a little off the beaten path. I decided to visit Wat Ku Tao, a Buddhist temple known for its distinctive chedi. This temple was built in 1613 to enshrine the remains of Nawrahta Minsaw, the first Burmese ruler of Lan Na. The chedi, with its unique Yunnanese style, was truly a sight to behold. It was arranged in a series of five diminishing spheres, representing the five historical and future Buddhas. I learned that the temple caters to Chiang Mai's Shan community and is also known as the Temple of the Gourd Pagoda.

The architecture of Wat Ku Tao was fascinating, with its Burmese artistic influences and intricate details. I spent some time wandering around the temple grounds, admiring the serene atmosphere and the beautiful decorations. It was a peaceful escape from the bustling city, and I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me. I took some time to appreciate the unique design of the chedi, which resembled a stack of watermelons. This quirky feature made the temple even more memorable.
With the afternoon sun beginning to dip, I decided to indulge in some unique shopping experiences. My first stop was the Elephant POOPOOPAPER Store @ Northern Village. I had heard about this place and was intrigued by the idea of paper made from elephant dung. I know it sounds a little strange, but I was curious to see it for myself. The store was located in the Northern Village, and as soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the friendly staff. They explained the process of making paper from elephant dung, and I was amazed by the creativity and sustainability of the operation.

I learned that elephant dung contains a lot of fiber, which makes it perfect for papermaking. The process involves cleaning, boiling, and processing the dung to extract the fibers, which are then used to create beautiful paper products. I was impressed by the eco-friendly approach and the commitment to elephant conservation. I ended up buying a few notebooks and greeting cards made from POOPOOPAPER as souvenirs for my friends and family. I knew they would appreciate the unique and sustainable nature of these gifts.
As the day turned into evening, I decided to treat myself to a delicious farewell dinner. I chose B Samcook Home16, a restaurant known for its modern twist on Thai cuisine. It was a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away in some side streets, but it was well worth the effort to find it. The restaurant had a charming and quirky atmosphere, with an open kitchen concept. I opted for the seven-course meal, which was a culinary journey through the flavors of Thailand. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. I was particularly impressed by the chef's creativity and attention to detail. He came out to greet us, and I learned that he was trained in some of the best restaurants in Thailand!

I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and memorable dining experience in Chiang Mai.
Finally, as the night drew closer, I decided to experience Chiang Mai's nightlife one last time. I headed to Zoe in Yellow, a popular bar known for its lively atmosphere and eclectic music. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists, and the energy was infectious. I grabbed a drink and soaked in the atmosphere, enjoying the mix of rock, reggae, dance, house, and techno music. Zoe in Yellow is the perfect place to let loose and have some fun, and I made some new friends while I was there.
