Solo Adventure Through the Historic Streets of Hue
Day 2: Echoes of Emperors: A Day Among Tombs and Bustling Markets in Hue
Wander through ancient mausoleums and vibrant markets in Hue. Experience history and culture, from royal tombs to local delicacies.
Whispers of Emperors and Market Day Hustle
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through the serene resting places of emperors and the vibrant chaos of local life. It’s amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day in Hue. It reminded me a little bit of Ouro Preto, back in Brazil, where history is etched into every street, but here, there's a unique blend of imperial grandeur and everyday hustle.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at La Boulangerie Francaise. As someone who now lives in Germany, I sometimes miss the simple pleasure of a good, authentic French pastry. This charming bakery, run by Vietnamese youths learning the trade, was just the ticket. I enjoyed a flaky croissant and strong coffee, fueling up for a day of exploration. It’s wonderful to see a place that not only serves delicious treats but also supports the local community.

First on the itinerary was the Mausoleum of Emperor Tu Duc. The ride there was beautiful, passing through the outskirts of Hue and into the countryside. October in Hue means the start of the rainy season , and there was a gentle drizzle, but that only added to the atmosphere. The air was fresh, and the landscape was lush and green.

Tu Duc’s Mausoleum is a sprawling complex, more like a park than a tomb. It was designed by the Emperor himself, a man of arts and letters, and it reflects his personality perfectly. There are serene lakes, ornate pavilions, and peaceful gardens. I wandered through the grounds, imagining the Emperor spending his days here, composing poetry and enjoying the tranquility.
To truly understand a place, you must walk in the footsteps of those who came before you.
The mausoleum offered a fascinating glimpse into the life and times of Emperor Tu Duc. He reigned for 36 years, a period marked by both internal strife and external pressures. He faced challenges such as foreign invaders, rivalry from his brothers for the throne, and his own illness while having no heirs. Despite these difficulties, he left behind a legacy of art, literature, and architecture. The visit was deeply moving, and I was struck by the Emperor's desire for peace and harmony.
Next, I headed to the Mausoleum of Emperor Khai Dinh. This tomb is a stark contrast to Tu Duc’s, reflecting a very different personality and era. Khai Dinh ruled during the French colonial period, and his mausoleum blends Eastern and Western architectural styles. It's a unique, some might say bizarre, combination of Gothic and Vietnamese elements.

The exterior is imposing, built of concrete and stone. The interior, however, is a riot of color, with intricate mosaics and elaborate decorations. There are dragons, elephants, and stern-faced mandarins, all rendered in vibrant detail. I climbed the steep staircases, marveling at the craftsmanship and the sheer audacity of the design. It’s a testament to a complex and controversial figure in Vietnamese history.
After a morning of exploring tombs, I was ready for lunch. I chose Golden Rice Restaurant, enticed by the promise of authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Located on a bustling street, the restaurant had a lively atmosphere. The staff were friendly, and the menu was extensive. I decided to try the *Nem Lui*, grilled pork skewers served with rice paper and fresh herbs. It was delicious, the flavors a perfect blend of sweet, savory, and spicy. I also ordered some *Morning Glory*, stir-fried with garlic. It was simple, fresh, and satisfying.

With my belly full, I ventured into Dong Ba Market. This is Hue’s largest and oldest market, a sprawling hive of activity where you can find just about anything. From fresh produce to clothing to handicrafts, it’s all here. The market is a feast for the senses, a cacophony of sounds, smells, and colors.

I wandered through the narrow aisles, dodging motorbikes and hawkers. I saw piles of colorful fruits and vegetables, stacks of silk fabrics, and displays of conical hats. I even sampled some street food, a spicy noodle soup that left my mouth tingling. The market was incredibly crowded, but it was also exhilarating. It gave me a real sense of the energy and vitality of Hue. I was on the lookout for a new lens for my camera, but the electronics section was a bit overwhelming.
I did manage to pick up a few souvenirs, including a beautiful silk scarf and some fragrant spices. Bargaining is expected here, and I had fun haggling with the vendors. It’s all part of the experience, a dance of offers and counteroffers that eventually leads to a mutually agreeable price. I remember doing something similar in the markets of Ouro Preto with my grandmother, *Vóvó* Catarina. She always knew how to get the best deals!
For dinner, I decided to try Elegant Restaurant, which I had read about online. It was a bit outside the city center, but the reviews promised a special experience. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with traditional Vietnamese touches and a cozy atmosphere. The staff were welcoming, and the menu offered a range of Vietnamese and European dishes. I opted for a Vietnamese specialty, a fish dish cooked in a clay pot. It was flavorful and well-presented, a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration.

As I walked back to my hotel, I reflected on the day. I had seen ancient tombs, bustling markets, and tasted delicious food. I had experienced the contrasts of Hue, the old and the new, the serene and the chaotic. It was a day that had enriched my understanding of this fascinating city, a day that I will not soon forget. I made a mental note to buy sunscreen and a portable phone charger tomorrow; I completely forgot those essentials.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit An Dinh Palace and the abandoned Thuy Tien Lake. I might even check out the Brown Eyes Bar in the evening. I’m excited to see what other hidden gems Hue has to offer.
Until then, *Adeus*!
