Whispers of Emperors and Eerie Echoes

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time that took me from the opulent echoes of emperors to the haunting silence of a forgotten playground. It’s funny how travel can surprise you; you set out with a plan, a list of must-sees, but the real magic happens when you stumble upon the unexpected. Today, Hue revealed a different side of itself, a blend of imperial grandeur and melancholic beauty that I won’t soon forget.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Nook Eatery-Breakfast to Burgers. I decided to try their waffles with coconut coffee. It was the best way to start the day. Refueled, I set off to explore the An Dinh Palace.

An Dinh Palace, a place I had read about before arriving in Hue, exceeded all expectations. As I approached the palace, the bright yellow facade stood out. The palace is a unique blend of Asian and European architecture. Built in 1917, it served as a residence for Emperor Khai Dinh and later Emperor Bao Dai. The palace has witnessed many historical events.

Walking through the main gate, I was immediately struck by the intricate porcelain mosaics. The details were amazing, rich in Vietnamese tradition. The Khai Tuong Pavilion, the main architectural centerpiece, was a sight to behold. The three-story structure blended Asian and European styles. Inside, I explored the artifacts used by the kings and the paintings depicting the royal tombs.

Visiting An Dinh Palace and Thuy Tien Lake offers a poignant reflection on the rise and fall of empires and the ephemeral nature of human endeavor.

After spending a few hours at An Dinh Palace, soaking in the history and art, I decided to venture off the beaten path to Thuy Tien Lake. This abandoned water park has gained notoriety for its eerie and mysterious beauty. It’s located about 7 kilometers southwest of Hue.

The ride to Thuy Tien Lake was an adventure in itself. The road wound through the countryside, offering glimpses of rural Vietnamese life. When I arrived, I paid a small entrance fee and parked my bike. The atmosphere was immediately different from the regal An Dinh Palace. Here, silence reigned, broken only by the rustling of leaves and the occasional bird.

Thuy Tien Lake was built in 2000 and abandoned in 2006. It was intended to be a popular attraction, but it never achieved its goal. Now, it’s a destination for urban explorers and photographers. The most iconic structure is the dragon-shaped aquarium.

Exploring the park, I was struck by the contrast between the decaying structures and the natural beauty of the lake and surrounding hills. Nature is slowly reclaiming the area, with vegetation growing over the abandoned buildings. It’s a reminder of the ephemeral nature of human endeavors.

After a day of exploring, I was ready for a good meal. I headed to Y Thao Garden for lunch. This restaurant is known for its traditional Hue cuisine and beautiful garden setting. The restaurant is housed in a 50-year-old traditional garden house. As I walked through the garden, I admired the bonsai displays and the classic arbor pathways.

I decided to try one of the set menu banquets featuring Hue's royal cuisine. The presentation was amazing, with spring rolls shaped like peacocks and turtle-shaped fried rice. The flavors were amazing, a blend of savory and sweet that danced on my tongue.

For dinner, I chose Serene cuisine restaurant, located on the ground floor of Hue Serene Palace Hotel. I had read great reviews about their excellent food and accommodating staff. I wanted to try some authentic Vietnamese delicacies. The restaurant did not disappoint. The noodle soup was yummy, and the pomelo salad was great.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to check out Brown Eyes Bar. I wanted to experience Hue's nightlife. The bar has a humble appearance but creates an atmosphere of friendship and freedom. The walls are adorned with paintings and autographs of guests. The music was a mix of classic rock and current hits. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring.

Tomorrow, I am planning to visit Vong Canh Hill and Tam Giang Lagoon. Vong Canh Hill offers a poetic landscape, and Tam Giang Lagoon is the largest lagoon in Vietnam. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the contrasts that Hue offers. It’s a city of imperial grandeur and quiet beauty, of ancient history and modern life. It’s a place that challenges and inspires, that invites you to explore its hidden corners and discover its secrets. As I return to my hotel, I carry with me the echoes of emperors and the whispers of a forgotten playground, a reminder of the richness and complexity of this amazing city.
