Echoes of History in Fes El Jdid

Today in Fes felt like stepping back in time, each corner revealing a new layer of the city's rich and complex history. From exploring the grandeur of a former royal capital to discovering the quiet beauty of a hidden synagogue and immersing myself in the artistry of a museum, it was a day filled with cultural immersion and unforgettable moments. I was particularly excited to delve deeper into the stories and traditions that have shaped this mesmerizing city, and share these experiences with you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Darna Fes. The traditional Moroccan pastries and mint tea set the perfect tone for a day of exploration. I've always found that starting the day with local flavors is the best way to connect with a new place. After fueling up, we set out to explore Fes El Jdid, the 'New Fes,' which, despite its name, dates back to the 13th century. Fes El Jdid was founded in 1276 by the Marinid sultan Abu Yusuf Yaqub as an extension of Fes el Bali. It served as the new royal citadel and center of government for Morocco. The area is a fascinating blend of Moroccan and Andalusian architectural styles. As an archivist, I was immediately drawn to the historical significance of this part of the city. Fes el-Jdid is home to several notable landmarks, including the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace, also known as Dar al-Makhzen, was built in the 14th century and serves as the official residence of the King of Morocco when he visits the city. While we couldn't go inside, the imposing gates and walls gave a sense of the opulence and grandeur associated with Moroccan royalty.

Wandering through the streets, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like centuries ago, when Fes El Jdid was the bustling center of power. The blend of architectural styles, from the traditional Moroccan riads to the elegant Andalusian gardens, created a unique atmosphere that transported me back in time. Hans would have loved the precision of the tile work, and I made a mental note to find a similar pattern for our garden back in Berlin.

One of the most significant parts of Fes El Jdid is the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter. The Mellah dates back to the 15th century and was once home to a thriving Jewish community. The history of the Mellah is a poignant reminder of the diverse cultural influences that have shaped Fes. The Mellah offers a glimpse into Fes' multicultural past and the traditions that have shaped the city's identity over the centuries. Walking through the narrow streets, it was hard not to feel a sense of the history that permeated the air, a testament to the generations who had lived and worked here.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Next on our itinerary was the Aben Danan Synagogue, a hidden gem within the Mellah. Finding it was a bit of an adventure in itself, tucked away behind an unassuming door in a narrow alley. The Aben Danan Synagogue dates back to the 17th century. It was founded by Mimoun Ben Sidan, a rich merchant from Aït Ishaq. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the serene atmosphere, a stark contrast to the bustling streets outside. The synagogue's architecture is a beautiful blend of Moroccan and Jewish styles, with intricate tile work, carved wooden ceilings, and a tranquil courtyard. The building has been restored several times, most recently in 1999, after a period of deterioration. The restoration was supported by the World Monuments Fund and the Judeo-Moroccan Cultural Heritage Foundation.

The synagogue is entered through a simple doorway, leading to a short flight of stairs that open into the high, rectangular prayer space. The room is lit by small windows high in the walls, creating a soft, diffused light that added to the sense of peace and reverence. The walls are adorned with blue figured Moroccan tiles, and the Torah Ark, a cupboard filling the width of an entire wall, is made of carved wood. Opposite the Torah Ark is a raised alcove, separated from the main prayer space by a wooden screen elaborately carved with a series of arches. It was intended as a seating area for the congregation's more distinguished members. The bimah is accessed from this space, constructed as a small platform cantilevered out from the raised area. The wooden bimah is topped by a wrought iron canopy of Islamic-style arches and floral forms, culminating in a crown.

It was easy to imagine the generations of worshippers who had gathered here, their voices echoing through the centuries. The Aben Danan Synagogue is not just a historical site; it is a living testament to the enduring legacy of the Jewish community in Fes. It felt like a privilege to be able to experience this sacred space, a place of quiet reflection amidst the vibrant chaos of the city. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and the stories that connect us to the past. Anna, with her love for art and history, would have been fascinated by the intricate details and the stories behind them.

For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Tresor Fes, a delightful place in the heart of Fes El Bali. The restaurant blends traditional Moroccan hospitality with a contemporary dining experience. The menu featured an array of Moroccan dishes, and I opted for a tagine, while my friends tried the couscous. The flavors were rich and authentic, and the ambiance was perfect for a midday break. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, eager to recommend dishes and share insights into Moroccan cuisine. It was a delightful culinary journey that left us feeling refreshed and ready for more exploration.

In the afternoon, we visited the Dar Batha Museum, housed in a former royal palace built in the late 19th century. The Dar Batha Museum was originally a palace built by Moulay Hassan at the end of the 19th century. In 1915, Dar Batha Palace became the Dar Batha Museum. The museum's collections include ceramics, textiles, woodwork, and traditional musical instruments. As we entered the museum, we were immediately struck by the stunning architecture, a blend of Hispanic-Moorish design with intricate tile work, carved wooden ceilings, and a beautiful Andalusian garden. The museum's collections are diverse, spanning various periods and artistic styles.

As an archivist, I was particularly drawn to the museum's collection of ceramics, which includes examples of the famous blue pottery of Fes. This style of pottery was first developed by artisans in Fes in the 10th century, who used a cobalt glaze to give their ceramics intricate blue patterns, a traditional style now known as Fez Blue. I was also fascinated by the textiles, including traditional garments, carpets, and embroidered fabrics that reflect the intricate artistry of Moroccan weavers. The woodwork collection was equally impressive, featuring furniture and decorative objects that exemplified the skill of Moroccan craftsmen. The Dar Batha Museum is more than just a collection of artifacts; it is a cultural treasure that encapsulates the history, artistry, and heritage of Morocco.

One of the highlights of the museum was the collection of astrolabes, historical astronomical instruments used by classical astronomers, navigators, and astrologers. These instruments were used for locating and predicting the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars, as well as for determining local time and latitude. It was fascinating to see these tools, which were once at the forefront of scientific knowledge, and to imagine the scholars who used them to chart the heavens. I was captivated by the intricate details of the instruments and the knowledge they represented. The astrolabes were not only functional but also beautifully crafted, adorned with jewels and elaborate metalwork. It was a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of the Arab world.

Before leaving Fes El Jdid, I couldn't resist a bit of shopping. We stopped by Fes Antiques, a charming shop filled with an array of treasures. While I didn't make any purchases, it was fascinating to browse the collection of antique pottery, Berber jewelry, and other artifacts. I've learned over the years that the key to successful antique shopping is patience and a keen eye for detail. It's also important to be respectful of the shopkeepers and their wares, and to remember that you're not just buying an object, but also a piece of history.

For dinner, we ventured to Les Mystères de Dar Tajine, a restaurant known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and warm atmosphere. The restaurant was a bit hidden away, but the search was well worth it. The menu featured a variety of traditional dishes, and we opted for a selection of tajines and couscous. The flavors were rich and complex, and the presentation was beautiful. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, savoring the tastes of Morocco in a cozy and inviting setting.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on all that we had experienced. From the grandeur of Fes El Jdid to the quiet beauty of the Aben Danan Synagogue and the artistic treasures of the Dar Batha Museum, it had been a day filled with cultural immersion and unforgettable moments. I was grateful for the opportunity to explore this fascinating city and to share these experiences with you. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to explore the Talaa Kebira, the Fez old medina, and Bab Boujloud. I'm particularly excited to wander through the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and to soak in the atmosphere of this ancient city. And perhaps, we'll find time to relax at the Empire bar in the evening, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

Tomorrow promises more discoveries and new adventures, and I can't wait to share them with you. Until then, may your own travels be filled with wonder and inspiration.
