Fes From Above and Below

Today in Fes was a delightful blend of historical exploration and serene relaxation. From panoramic views atop ancient tombs to the vibrant heart of the city's square and the tranquil escape of lush gardens, it was a day that truly captured the essence of this magical city. Join me as I recount the stories and scenes from a day well spent in Fes.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Le Peroke Cafe Restaurant. Hans and I enjoyed some traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for the day's adventures. The cafe's rooftop terrace offered a lovely view of the city awakening, and I made a mental note to try their tagine next time, after reading some reviews. It's always a pleasure to start the day with a taste of local flavor, and this cozy spot certainly delivered.

First on our itinerary was a visit to the Marinid Tombs. Perched high on a hill overlooking Fes, these tombs offered a breathtaking panoramic view of the city. As we arrived, the morning sun cast a golden glow over the sprawling medina, its rooftops and minarets creating a mesmerizing tapestry. The tombs themselves, dating back to the 14th century, were in a state of dramatic ruin, adding to the mystique of the place. Although little remains of their original decoration, the crumbling structures whispered tales of a bygone era. It was easy to imagine the Marinid dynasty ruling over Fes from this very spot, their power and influence echoing through the ages.

Hans, ever the pragmatist, was fascinated by the structural elements of the tombs, pointing out the intricate brickwork and the remnants of arches. I, on the other hand, was more drawn to the historical significance of the site, imagining the lives of those buried here and the events that shaped their world. It's moments like these, when our different perspectives intertwine, that make traveling with Hans so enriching. As an archivist, I always appreciate the opportunity to connect with the past, and the Marinid Tombs provided a tangible link to Fes's rich history. We learned that no one actually knows who is buried here, which added a shroud of ancient mystery to the site. The tombs are open 24 hours a day, and there is no entry fee, which makes it a great budget activity while in the city.

The Marinid Tombs are not just a historical site, but a vantage point offering a unique perspective on the beauty and history of Fes.

After soaking in the views and the history at the Marinid Tombs, we made our way down to Place Rcif, a bustling square in the heart of the medina. This vibrant hub is a crossroads of commerce and culture, where locals and tourists alike gather to socialize, shop, and simply watch the world go by. The square was alive with activity – vendors hawking their wares, children playing, and the aroma of spices and street food filling the air. It was quite a contrast to the serene atmosphere of the tombs, but equally captivating in its own way.

I was particularly drawn to the traditional Moroccan crafts on display, from colorful ceramics to intricate metalwork. Hans, meanwhile, was more interested in the local food stalls, sampling some of the delicious street food on offer. We shared a plate of grilled kebabs and some sweet pastries, savoring the flavors of Fes as we watched the square come to life around us. The square is near the R'cif Mosque, which has one of the tallest minarets in the city. I learned that Place Rcif was created in the 20th century to provide easier access to the interior of the medina, and it is one of the only places inside the medina that can be reached by car.

As we strolled through Place Rcif, I couldn't help but marvel at the diversity of Fes. The city is a melting pot of cultures and traditions, where ancient history meets modern life. It's a place where you can wander through centuries-old souks, admire stunning Islamic architecture, and experience the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people. It's no wonder that Fes has captured my heart, and I know that I will continue to discover new and fascinating aspects of this city with each passing day.

Seeking a respite from the lively atmosphere of Place Rcif, we decided to visit Jnan Sbil, a sprawling garden located on the outskirts of the medina. This tranquil oasis offered a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, with its lush greenery, serene fountains, and shaded pathways. As we entered the gardens, we were immediately enveloped in a sense of calm and tranquility.

The air was filled with the sweet scent of flowers, and the sound of birdsong provided a soothing soundtrack to our walk. We wandered through the various sections of the garden, each with its own unique character and charm. There was an Andalusian garden with its intricate tilework and geometric designs, a Mexican garden with its cacti and succulents, and a bamboo garden with its towering stalks creating a cool and shady canopy. It was a veritable feast for the senses, and I felt my stress melting away with each step.

As we strolled through Jnan Sbil, I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of preserving green spaces in urban environments. These gardens provide a vital sanctuary for both people and wildlife, offering a place to relax, reconnect with nature, and escape the pressures of modern life. In a city as densely populated as Fes, Jnan Sbil is a true treasure, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience its beauty and tranquility.

We learned that Jnan Sbil often hosts cultural events, and I was excited to read about a musical performance scheduled for this evening as part of the Fez the World Sacred Music Festival. It featured Tunisian Maluf, Sufi chanting, and a fusion between the bansuri flute and the Cristal Baschet. I made a mental note to check the schedule for future events during our stay. The gardens are also home to historic monuments like the Borj Sheikh Ahmed ramparts and norias (water wheels) that add to the atmosphere of ancient mysticism.

For dinner, we decided to try Restaurant MB, located in Ville Nouvelle. The restaurant offered a mix of French classics and Moroccan specialties, and reviews suggested it would be a memorable dining experience. I ordered the traditional pigeon pastilla, while Hans opted for the Ocean Roll of Shrimp and Fish. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was elegant and modern. It was a delightful contrast to the more traditional restaurants we had visited in the medina. The price point was higher than average in Fes, but very affordable from a tourist's point of view.

After dinner, we headed to Rooftop Nour Plazza for a nightcap. The rooftop bar offered stunning views of the city, and we enjoyed some Moroccan mint tea as we reflected on the day's adventures. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we struck up a conversation with some fellow travelers who were equally captivated by the magic of Fes. The hotel also has a pool on the rooftop, which would be nice to try out if we had more time. I am glad we were able to experience the city from above and below today.
