Exploring the Rich Heritage of Fes with Friends
Day 6: A Sensory Overload: Navigating the Vibrant Heart of Fes
Immersing myself in the bustling medina of Fes, exploring ancient streets, savoring local cuisine, and discovering hidden gems with friends.
Lost in the Labyrinth: A Day in the Fes Medina
Today was an immersion into the very soul of Fes. The medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a place where time seems to stand still, where the echoes of centuries past resonate in the narrow alleyways and bustling souks. It was a day of sensory overload, a delightful chaos of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes that left me both exhilarated and utterly captivated.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at La Maison Bleue. The riad itself is a work of art, a testament to Moroccan craftsmanship and hospitality. The breakfast spread was a feast for the eyes and the stomach – an array of fresh pastries, local honey, and strong, aromatic coffee. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. I savored every bite, knowing that I needed the energy for the adventures that lay ahead. I made sure to thank the staff, their warm smiles a reminder of the genuine hospitality that Moroccans are known for. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding, connecting with people and cultures in unexpected ways.
With stomachs full and spirits high, my friends and I ventured into the heart of the medina through the iconic Bab Boujloud, also known as the Blue Gate. The gate itself is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, adorned with intricate mosaics in vibrant shades of blue on one side and green on the other. It’s a striking contrast to the surrounding sand-colored walls and a fitting entrance to the sensory explosion that awaits within. Bab Boujloud, constructed in 1913, serves as the grand entrance to the old city, welcoming visitors with its striking design and intricate details. Passing through its arches felt like stepping into another world.

The medina of Fes is a living, breathing tapestry of history, culture, and human connection.
As we stepped through Bab Boujloud, we found ourselves on Talaa Kebira, one of the main arteries of the medina. The street, also known as the Great Slope/Climb, is a bustling thoroughfare lined with shops selling everything imaginable – spices, textiles, leather goods, ceramics, and more. The air was thick with the aroma of exotic spices, the sounds of vendors hawking their wares, and the vibrant colors of the merchandise on display. It was a feast for the senses, a delightful chaos that was both overwhelming and exhilarating.

We wandered through the souks, getting delightfully lost in the labyrinthine alleyways. Each turn revealed a new surprise – a hidden courtyard, a bustling workshop, a fragrant spice stall. I was particularly fascinated by the leather souk, where artisans were hard at work crafting intricate bags, shoes, and other leather goods. The smell of the tanneries was pungent, but the craftsmanship on display was truly remarkable. I even bartered for a beautiful leather journal, a perfect souvenir to document my travels.
At lunchtime, we stopped at Restaurant Boujloud for a taste of authentic Fassi cuisine. The restaurant, with its panoramic views of the medina, offered a welcome respite from the bustling streets. We shared a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew cooked in a conical earthenware pot. The flavors were rich and complex, a blend of sweet and savory that was simply divine. It was the perfect fuel for our afternoon explorations.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the city, we decided to seek out a rooftop bar for a final glimpse of the medina. We found ourselves at the Empire bar, a trendy spot with stunning views of the city skyline. Sipping on mint tea, we watched as the city transformed into a sea of twinkling lights. It was a magical moment, a perfect end to a day of unforgettable experiences.

Alvern Saad was playing at the Semmarin Medina Gate. While I enjoy live music, I was exhausted from the day's adventure, so I decided to call it a night.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, and perhaps indulge in a traditional hammam. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today, the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes of the Fes medina.
I am also hoping to visit Cooperative Artisanal de Fes tomorrow to buy some souvenirs for my family back in Berlin. Anna would love the pottery and Hans would appreciate the intricate woodwork.
Back at the riad, I reflect on the day's adventures. I am reminded of Kazanlak, my hometown in Bulgaria, and the Rose Festival that takes place there every year. The sights, sounds, and smells of the Fes medina are a world away from the tranquility of the Rose Valley, but both places share a common thread – a deep connection to history, culture, and community. It is these connections that make traveling so meaningful, reminding us of our shared humanity and the beauty of our diverse world. As I drift off to sleep, I dream of the labyrinthine alleyways of Fes, the fragrant spices, and the warm smiles of the Moroccan people.
I am so happy that I decided to come to Fes with my friends. It has been an unforgettable experience and I am looking forward to the rest of our trip. I am also grateful for the opportunity to share my experiences with you, my readers. I hope that my words have inspired you to visit Fes and experience the magic of the medina for yourself. Until tomorrow, dear readers, may your own travels be filled with wonder and discovery.
