Whispers of the Past

Today in Fes felt like stepping back in time, each corner revealing another layer of its rich history. It’s a city that truly captivates the senses, and I was eager to explore it further with my friends. As an archivist, I find myself drawn to places where the past feels palpable, and Fes certainly did not disappoint.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Nagham Cafe. The cafe had a relaxing atmosphere and a wonderful view of the Medina. It was the perfect spot to fuel up before diving into our itinerary. I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast of msemen, a flaky pancake, with honey and a pot of mint tea. My friends opted for a variety of pastries and strong coffee. The mix of traditional and contemporary choices of meals and dishes was a great introduction to the day ahead.

With our appetites sated, we set off to Bab Makina Plaza. The plaza is a majestic stone square surrounded by high stone walls. It felt like stepping back into medieval times. I imagined the plaza filled with bustling crowds, merchants hawking their wares, and the echoes of royal decrees. The architecture was imposing, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history that had unfolded within those walls.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Next on our list was Point de Vue Allal El Fassi, a viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of the city. It was named after Allal El Fassi, an important figure in Moroccan nationalism. From our vantage point, the sprawling cityscape unfolded before us, a tapestry of rooftops, minarets, and winding alleyways. The view gave us a sense of the city's scale and complexity. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, hoping to preserve the memory of this breathtaking panorama. I am always looking for ways to improve my photography skills, so I tried to take my time to frame the shots and capture the essence of Fes.

Our historical journey continued to Dar al-Magana, also known as the Water Clock. This 14th-century structure, built by Sultan Abu Inan Faris, once housed a weight-powered water clock designed to serve the nearby Bou Inania Madrasa. Although the clock is no longer functioning, the building itself is a testament to the ingenuity of Marinid-era craftsmanship. I was particularly fascinated by the intricate details of the facade and the stories of the clock's original mechanisms. It was easy to imagine the clock diligently marking the hours, its rhythmic ticking a constant presence in the life of the city.

After a morning filled with historical exploration, we were ready for lunch. We chose Restaurant Soultana, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and warm atmosphere. The restaurant's decor, with its colorful tiles and carved woodwork, transported us to the heart of Moroccan culture. We shared a variety of dishes, including tagine, couscous, and pastilla, each bursting with flavor and spices. The tagine, cooked in a traditional clay pot, was especially delicious, the meat tender and infused with aromatic herbs. It was a culinary experience that perfectly complemented our historical explorations.

In the late afternoon, we decided to indulge in a bit of relaxation at Café Calairis. This bar offered a welcome respite from the bustling streets, with a laid-back atmosphere and a selection of refreshing drinks. We sipped on mint tea and chatted about our experiences of the day, savoring the tranquility of the moment. It was a perfect way to unwind and recharge before our evening activities.

For dinner, we opted for something a bit different and chose Isla Blanca, a European restaurant in Fes. The restaurant is known for bringing a taste of Europe to Moroccan culture. The menu featured a diverse selection of European cuisine, from pasta to seafood. I decided on the seafood linguine, while my friends chose a variety of dishes, including steak and pasta. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was both sophisticated and comfortable. It was a delightful change of pace and a perfect end to a day filled with Moroccan culture.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I am reminded of how much I appreciate traveling with friends. Sharing these experiences with others makes them all the more memorable. Hans would have loved the historical sites, and I can already imagine telling him all about them when I return to Berlin.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Fes, including the panoramic view, Bab Dekkakin, and Bab Riafa. I’m also looking forward to visiting the Cooperative Artisanal de Fes to pick up some souvenirs. Each day in Fes brings new discoveries, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds. I think I will try to find some nice spices to bring home to Berlin. I am sure Anna will love them, and we can try some new recipes together.

Fes continues to surprise and inspire me. It’s a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and culinary delights, offering a truly unforgettable travel experience. I am so grateful for the opportunity to explore it with my friends and to share these moments with you all. Until tomorrow, happy travels!

P.S. I almost forgot my travel adapter, again! Luckily, one of my friends had an extra, so I was able to charge my camera and phone. I really need to make a checklist before each trip to avoid these little mishaps.
