Fes from Above and Below

Today was a day of contrasts, experiencing Fes from its highest points to the intricate details of its ancient gates. The city unfolded before us in layers of history and culture, a feast for the senses that left me both breathless and contemplative. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to immerse myself in the stories of places and people, and to share those experiences with all of you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Truffe. The cozy atmosphere and delicious food were the perfect start to a day of exploration. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea, of course. It's funny, I never used to be a tea drinker, but now I can't imagine starting my day without it. Hans, ever the early bird, was already up and researching our next destination while I savored my breakfast.

Fueled and ready, we set off to capture a panoramic view of Fes. The climb was invigorating, and as we reached the top, the city spread out before us in all its glory. The Medina, a labyrinth of winding streets and vibrant colors, stretched as far as the eye could see, framed by the rolling hills in the distance. It was a sight that truly took my breath away. I tried to imagine what it must have been like centuries ago, when Fes was at the height of its power, a center of learning and trade. The scene was truly mesmerizing.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the simple act of witnessing the world from a different perspective.

After soaking in the panoramic view, we descended back into the city, eager to explore its historic gates. Our first stop was Bab Dekkakin. The gate stands between the Old Mechouar and the New Mechouar on the northern edge of Fes el-Jdid. Learning that it was once called the 'Gate of the Lion' was fascinating. I could almost picture the carved image of a lion that once adorned it. Bab Dekkakin, meaning 'Gate of the Benches,' got its name from the benches where people waited for audiences with the Sultan. It's incredible to think of all the history that has passed through this gate, all the important decisions that have been made within its walls.

Next, we ventured to Bab Riafa. This gate, unlike the others, had a different story to tell. It was once a garrison post housing troops from the Rif mountain region. Standing there, I could almost hear the echoes of soldiers and the sounds of a city preparing for defense. It's amazing how these gates, once symbols of protection, now stand as testaments to the city's enduring spirit.

For lunch, we decided on Restaurant La Cabane. The restaurant offered a cozy retreat from the bustling city. The pizza was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect place to recharge before our afternoon adventures. I even managed to convince Hans to try a Moroccan pastry for dessert. He's usually not one for sweets, but he admitted it was quite good.

In the afternoon, we immersed ourselves in the local crafts at the Cooperative Artisanal de Fes. As an archivist, I'm always drawn to places where history and culture are preserved. This cooperative was a treasure trove of traditional Moroccan artistry. From intricately woven carpets to delicately crafted ceramics, each piece told a story of generations of skilled artisans. I was particularly drawn to the carpets, each one a unique work of art. Anna would have loved this place. I made a mental note to bring her here someday.

I found myself captivated by the Anou Cooperative, a space run by Moroccan artisans. The artisans themselves staff the store, offering a direct connection to the creators of the crafts. They even have a sustainable dye studio on the roof, showcasing their commitment to environmentally safe practices. It was inspiring to see artisans empowered to connect directly with customers, ensuring fair access to the money they deserve.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at Palais La Médina for dinner. The restaurant was stunning, with colorful tiles and ornate pillars that transported us to another time and place. The traditional Moroccan music added to the ambiance, creating a truly magical experience. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the wonders of Fes.

Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by the layers of history and culture that permeate every corner of Fes. From the panoramic views to the intricate gates and vibrant crafts, this city is a living testament to the enduring spirit of Morocco.

Tomorrow, we're embarking on a day trip that includes the Fez-Volubilis Tour. I'm particularly excited about visiting Volubilis, an ancient Roman city that I've read so much about. We'll also be meeting with Salim Fez Guide, a local expert who promises to show us hidden gems of the city. And of course, no trip to Fes would be complete without exploring the Fez Bazar. I'm sure we'll find plenty of treasures to bring home. In the evening, we plan to unwind at the Eden Chope Bar.

Until then, I bid you goodnight from Fes, a city that has captured my heart and imagination.

I'm so glad to be sharing this journey with you all. It's moments like these that remind me why I love what I do. The world is full of stories waiting to be discovered, and I'm honored to be able to share them with you. Perhaps Hans and I will be back, maybe with Anna in tow, to discover even more of the rich culture of Fes.

P.S. I almost forgot to mention! I completely forgot to pack a travel adapter. Hans had to lend me his, which meant he couldn't charge his devices. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!
