Fassi Fairytales: A Day Immersed in History and Culture
Today was a symphony of sights, sounds, and flavors that painted a vivid picture of Fes's rich tapestry. From the opulent halls of a palace to the tranquil courtyards of a mosque and the sweeping vistas from an ancient fortress, Fes unfolded its stories in layers, each more captivating than the last. It was a day of exploration that resonated deeply with my archivist's soul, a treasure trove of memories etched in time.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Clock. I opted for the Berber eggs, a delightful concoction of tomatoes, herbs, and local cheese. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The cafe itself was a vibrant hub, a meeting point for locals and travelers alike, buzzing with conversations and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. I made sure to take a mental note of the location; Hans would love the atmosphere here.
Refreshed and ready, our first stop was the Palais Mnebhi, a palace steeped in history. The architecture was simply breathtaking. The intricate details of the zellij tilework, the stucco carvings, and the cedarwood ceilings were a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of Moroccan artisans. It was fascinating to learn that this palace was where the Treaty of Fes was signed in 1912, marking a significant turning point in Moroccan history. I imagined the dignitaries who once walked these halls, their decisions shaping the destiny of a nation. The palace was a maze of rooms organized around two large courtyards with traditional decor and three gardens filled with fountains and ponds. Each corner seemed to whisper tales of a bygone era. The rooftop terrace offered a panoramic view of the medina, a sprawling labyrinth of rooftops and minarets bathed in the warm morning light.

History is not just a collection of dates and events; it is a living, breathing narrative that shapes our present and guides our future.
Next, we ventured into the serene world of the Andalusian Mosque. Founded in the 9th century by Maryam al-Fihri, the sister of Fatima al-Fihri who founded the Al Quaraouiyine University, this mosque stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Idrisid dynasty. The Andalusian Mosque, also known as the Mosque of the Andalusians, is one of the most historic mosques in the city of Fes, Morocco. I was struck by the simplicity and elegance of its design. The courtyard, with its intricate fountain and meticulously arranged tiles, offered a peaceful respite from the bustling streets outside. The prayer hall, adorned with cedar wood ceilings and marble columns, exuded a sense of reverence and tranquility. I learned that the mosque had undergone several expansions and restorations throughout its history, each leaving its mark on the building's unique character. It was humbling to stand in a place of worship that had served the community for centuries, a silent witness to the ebb and flow of human life. I took a moment to reflect on the shared values of faith and community that transcend time and culture. I thought about the countless prayers that had been whispered within those walls, the hopes and dreams of generations past.

Our midday meal was at Restaurant Soultana. The restaurant was located in one of the most majestic riad-like settings, and I got lost admiring all the intricate details in the architectural decor. I chose a traditional tagine, savoring the rich blend of spices and tender meat. It was more than just a meal; it was an immersion into the culinary heritage of Fes.
In the afternoon, we decided to visit the Medin Art shop. It was a treasure trove of unique finds. I was captivated by the silk scarves, leather bags, and handmade notebooks. I ended up purchasing a beautiful leather-bound journal with intricate Berber designs, a perfect addition to my collection of travel mementos. I also found a delicate silk scarf with vibrant colors, a gift for Anna, who always appreciates unique and handcrafted items.

As the sun began its descent, we made our way to the Borj Nord Museum, a fortress perched on a hill overlooking the city. The walk to the fortress was an adventure in itself, a winding path through narrow streets and bustling marketplaces. The Borj Nord, constructed in 1582 by the Saadian Sultan Ahmed Al Mansour Eddahbi, was initially built to keep a watchful eye over the city. Today, it houses a fascinating collection of arms from around the world, spanning from prehistory to the 20th century. I was particularly impressed by the Moroccan arms, many of which were produced in Fes at the Makina, an industrial arms factory established in 1886. The museum offered a unique perspective on the military history of Morocco and its interactions with other cultures. But the real highlight of the Borj Nord was the panoramic view from the roof. From this vantage point, Fes unfolded in all its glory. The setting sun cast a golden glow over the medina, highlighting the intricate patterns of the rooftops and the silhouettes of the minarets. It was a breathtaking sight, a moment of pure magic that I will cherish forever.

Dinner tonight was at Darori, a charming restaurant nestled in the heart of the medina. The cozy courtyard dining area, furnished with old French dressers and saffron-hued carpets, created a warm and inviting atmosphere. I savored Fassi favorites like pigeon pastilla, beef and prune tagine, and pastries. The meal was a delightful end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Fes. Each location we visited offered a unique perspective on this fascinating city, from the opulence of the Palais Mnebhi to the serenity of the Andalusian Mosque and the panoramic views from the Borj Nord Museum. I am excited to see what tomorrow holds, as we plan to visit the Marinid Tombs, Place Rcif, and Jnan Sbil. I am especially looking forward to unwinding at the Rooftop Nour Plazza bar in the evening. I am sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.
Before I turn in for the night, I must remember to pack my camera and ensure my comfortable walking shoes are ready for another day of exploration. I should also try to find a travel adapter, as I forgot to pack one, and it would be helpful for charging my devices. Good night from Fes!
