Whispers of the Past, Rhythms of the Present

Today's adventure was a fascinating blend of ancient history and vibrant modern culture. From exploring Roman ruins to navigating bustling souks, every moment was filled with discovery and wonder. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to connect with the past, embrace the present, and share it all with good friends.

Our day began with an early breakfast at Cafe Clock. The cafe is located down a narrow alley, but is well worth the adventure to find it. The rooftop seating provided a stunning view of the medina as we enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast, fueling up for a day of exploration. I opted for a simple but satisfying plate of msemen, a flaky pancake served with honey and cheese, while my friends tried the cafe's famous camel burger, a culinary adventure they were eager to undertake. Sipping on sweet mint tea, we discussed our plans for the day, eager to delve into the rich history and vibrant culture of Fes and its surroundings.

After breakfast, we met our guide, Salim Fez Guide, for our Fes-Volubilis Tour. Salim, a passionate and knowledgeable local, greeted us with a warm smile and a wealth of information about the region. Salim was very knowledgable about the history, culture and traditions. As an archivist, I always appreciate a guide who can provide historical context and insightful commentary, and Salim certainly delivered. His English was excellent, and he had a knack for making history come alive.

Our first stop was Volubilis, an ancient Roman city located about an hour's drive from Fes. As we drove through the fertile Saiss Plain, Salim shared stories about the region's agricultural heritage and the importance of olive oil production in Roman times. The landscape was dotted with rolling hills and olive groves, providing a picturesque backdrop to our journey. Upon arriving at Volubilis, I was immediately struck by the scale and preservation of the site. The ruins, dating back to the 3rd century BC, offer a glimpse into the daily lives of the city's inhabitants. As we wandered through the ancient streets, Salim pointed out the remains of grand public buildings, temples, and luxurious private houses, many adorned with intricate mosaics. The mosaics were particularly impressive, depicting scenes from Roman mythology and everyday life. I was captivated by the House of Orpheus, where a stunning mosaic floor features the mythical musician charming animals with his lyre. We were able to observe the everyday lives of ancient Romans with well-preserved ruins.

The stones of Volubilis whisper tales of emperors, olive groves, and vibrant markets, connecting us to a civilization that thrived centuries ago.

Exploring Volubilis felt like stepping back in time. The city was once a thriving hub of trade and commerce, connecting the Roman Empire with the Berber kingdoms of North Africa. As I walked along the ancient roads, I imagined the bustling marketplace, the sounds of merchants haggling, and the vibrant energy of daily life. The triumphal arch, built in honor of Emperor Caracalla, stood as a testament to Roman power and influence. Salim explained how Volubilis was a major producer of olive oil, which was exported to Rome, contributing to the city's wealth and prosperity. The remains of olive presses are still visible throughout the site, offering a glimpse into the city's agricultural heritage.

After Volubilis, we visited Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, a charming town located just a few kilometers away. Moulay Idriss is considered one of Morocco's holiest cities, named after Moulay Idriss I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and the man who introduced Islam to Morocco in the late 8th century. The town is perched on a hillside, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. As we strolled through the narrow streets, I admired the white-washed buildings and the peaceful atmosphere. Although non-Muslims cannot enter the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, the town is still worth a visit for its picturesque beauty and spiritual significance.

For lunch, we headed back to Fes and enjoyed a delightful meal at Restaurant Darna fes. This restaurant is known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine and its panoramic view of the ancient city. The perfect location offered a view of the entire ancient city. We started with a selection of Moroccan salads, followed by a tagine with chicken and preserved lemons. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the culinary heritage of Fes. The food was very tasty. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, making it the perfect place to relax and recharge after a day of exploring.

In the afternoon, we immersed ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the Fez Bazar. This bustling marketplace is a sensory delight, filled with the colors, sounds, and scents of Moroccan life. As we navigated the maze-like alleyways, we encountered a dizzying array of goods, from handcrafted pottery and intricate textiles to spices, leather goods, and metalwork. I was particularly fascinated by the Chouara Tannery, where leather is produced using traditional methods that have been passed down for generations. The process is quite pungent, but the finished products are beautiful and unique. It was an opportunity to engage with the local culture.

Navigating the Fez Bazar can be overwhelming, but it's also an incredibly rewarding experience. The key is to embrace the chaos, be prepared to haggle, and take your time to explore the hidden corners of the market. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, which will serve as a reminder of my time in Fes. My friends purchased leather bags and spices, eager to bring a taste of Morocco back home. The bazar captures the essence of Moroccan life.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Eden chope bar for a relaxing evening. This bar is known for its good beer and its enjoyable atmosphere. We ordered a round of drinks and reflected on the day's adventures. The bar provided a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the medina, a chance to unwind and enjoy each other's company.

Before heading back to our riad, we had dinner at L'Amandier, located on the top floor of Palais Faraj. This restaurant offers stunning views of the medina and serves re-imagined Fassi recipes influenced by Mediterranean flavors. The jewel in the Palais Faraj's crown is its rooftop restaurant. The atmosphere was sophisticated and romantic, the perfect setting for a memorable meal. I ordered the Fassi stuffed cockerel, a traditional dish that was both flavorful and beautifully presented. My friends opted for the tagine and the Moroccan salads, all of which were delicious. The restaurant also had live music, which added to the ambiance.

The Fez Festival of World Sacred Music is taking place right now, and I could hear faint echoes of the music in the distance. The 28th edition of the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music will run from Friday, May 16 to Saturday, May 24, 2025. This year's theme is “RENAISSANCES,” reflecting Morocco's ongoing cultural renewal and the festival's commitment to rejuvenating ancient musical traditions. I wish we had more time to attend some of the performances, but perhaps that will be a reason to return to Fes in the future.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Tropicana Parc. Then, we'll explore Rainbow Street Art and visit La Grande Terrasse. Finally, we will have dinner at La Kasbah de Fes. I am very excited for tomorrow!

Today was a whirlwind of experiences, a journey through time and culture that left me feeling both exhilarated and humbled. Fes is a city that truly captivates the senses, a place where ancient traditions meet modern life in a vibrant and unforgettable way. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this remarkable city with my friends, sharing in the joy of discovery and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

As I reflect on the day, I realize that travel is more than just visiting new places – it's about connecting with people, understanding different cultures, and expanding our own perspectives. Fes has certainly challenged and inspired me, and I look forward to continuing my journey of exploration in the days to come.
