Exploring the Rich Heritage of Fes with Friends
Day 8: A Day of Spiritual and Artistic Immersion in Fes
Explore the heart of Fes with me as we delve into ancient mosques, vibrant souks, and serene gardens, uncovering the city's rich history.
Whispers of Faith and Art
Today in Fes was a journey through the soul of this ancient city. It was a day filled with the echoes of history, the vibrant colors of local artistry, and the quiet whispers of faith. From the hallowed halls of a world-renowned university to the bustling stalls of the souk, every moment was a sensory feast, painting a vivid picture of Fes's enduring legacy.
Our day began with an early breakfast at Dar Roumana. The Franco-Moroccan fusion was a delightful start to the day. The fresh beetroot salad with local goat cheese was particularly memorable, a perfect blend of sweet and savory that energized us for the day ahead. Eating in the courtyard, with the soft morning light filtering through the lush greenery, set a peaceful tone. I made a mental note to try and recreate that salad back in Berlin, perhaps with some fresh produce from our own little garden. Hans would certainly appreciate that.
Fueled and ready, we ventured into the heart of the medina to visit the Mosque and University Kairaouine. As an archivist, I was particularly excited about this visit. Founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, it’s considered one of the oldest universities in the world. While non-Muslims can't enter the mosque itself, I was content to admire its grandeur from the outside. The intricate details of the architecture, a blend of various historical periods, were simply breathtaking. Just imagining the countless scholars who have passed through those doors, dedicating their lives to learning and preserving knowledge, sent shivers down my spine. It was a humbling experience, connecting with such a rich and enduring legacy of intellectual pursuit.

To truly understand a place, you must immerse yourself in its history and culture, letting the echoes of the past guide your present.
Next on our itinerary was the Cherratine Medersa. Built in 1670 by Sultan Moulay al-Rashid, this theological school offered a fascinating glimpse into the architecture of the Alaouite dynasty. Fortunately, this was open to non-muslims. Unlike the earlier Merinid style, the Cherratine Medersa had a unique layout, featuring multiple small courtyards instead of one large one. The central courtyard, with its marble fountain, was a serene oasis amidst the bustling city. The intricate tile work and carved wood were a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of the time. As I wandered through the student rooms and galleries, I couldn’t help but imagine the lives of the scholars who once lived and studied here, dedicating themselves to religious and legal sciences.

From the tranquility of the medersa, we plunged into the vibrant chaos of the Henna Souk. This marketplace, one of the oldest in the medina, was a feast for the senses. The air was thick with the scent of spices, herbs, and traditional cosmetics, including, of course, henna. I was fascinated by the array of natural products on display, each with its own unique properties and uses. The stallholders were friendly and eager to share their knowledge, offering insights into the traditional Moroccan beauty rituals. I even bought a small bag of henna to take back to Anna, who I know would appreciate trying it out. The souk was also filled with beautiful pottery, adorned with the traditional blue-and-white hues of Fassi ceramics. I resisted the urge to buy more, reminding myself that I already had a suitcase full of treasures.

For lunch, we found ourselves at Restaurant Dar Alaoui. The restaurant is known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and spectacular decor. The food was good, offering a nice selection of traditional dishes. The atmosphere was equally delightful, with the restaurant decorated in the traditional Moroccan style, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. It was a welcome respite from the midday sun, and we enjoyed a leisurely meal, savoring the flavors of Fes.

In the late afternoon, seeking a bit of relaxation, we stumbled upon the Zen Garden bar. Tucked away from the bustling streets, this little oasis offered a tranquil escape. While it wasn't quite the relaxing experience we anticipated, the change of pace was welcome. I enjoyed a refreshing drink, soaking in the peaceful ambiance before we ventured back into the medina.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city, we made our way to La Truffe for dinner. This restaurant offered a delightful change of pace, with its refined atmosphere and excellent service. The food was delicious, exceeding expectations with the Caesar salad, pizza, and crème brûlée all proving to be excellent choices. It was a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.
