Whispers of the West Bank

Today, I ventured deeper into the West Bank of Luxor, a realm brimming with history and artistry. Leaving behind the familiar comforts of the Iberotel Luxor Hotel after a hearty breakfast, my camera and I set out to explore the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut and Deir el-Medina, each promising a unique glimpse into ancient Egyptian life. The February sun was already warming the desert air, hinting at another day of exploration under clear skies.

The morning began with a visit to the magnificent Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut. Even from a distance, its grandeur was striking, a testament to the ambition and power of the female pharaoh. As I approached, the temple's terraces seemed to rise organically from the desert floor, blending seamlessly with the towering cliffs of Deir el-Bahri.

Stepping onto the first terrace, I felt an immediate sense of awe. The symmetry and scale of the temple were breathtaking. Colonnades stretched out before me, their shadows offering a cool respite from the sun. I imagined Hatshepsut herself walking these very paths, a queen who dared to defy convention and leave an indelible mark on Egypt's history.

The temple's architecture is a marvel, a series of layered terraces connected by ramps. Each level revealed intricate reliefs and carvings, telling stories of Hatshepsut's reign, her divine birth, and her successful expeditions to distant lands. Despite the passage of millennia, many of these carvings retained their vibrant colors, offering a vivid glimpse into the past. It was fascinating to learn about Hatshepsut, the longest-reigning female pharaoh, and how she transformed Egypt through trade and building projects. The temple, also known as Djeser-Djeseru, meaning the 'Holy of Holies', was built in honor of her and is a mortuary, or memorial, temple constructed in her honor.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

As I ascended to the upper terraces, the views became even more spectacular. From here, I could see the vast expanse of the Theban Necropolis stretching out before me, a landscape dotted with tombs and temples, each holding its own secrets. I spent a long time wandering through the upper courtyards, admiring the statues of Hatshepsut as Osiris, the god of the afterlife. Although some were damaged, their presence was still imposing, a reminder of the queen's enduring legacy.

After immersing myself in the grandeur of Hatshepsut's temple, I journeyed to Deir el-Medina, the village of the artisans who built the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings and Queens. This site offered a more intimate and personal glimpse into ancient Egyptian life. It was here, in this small village nestled in the desert, that the craftsmen, artists, and scribes who created the magnificent tombs lived and worked.

Walking through the ruins of Deir el-Medina, I felt as though I was stepping back in time. The village's layout was still discernible, with the foundations of houses, workshops, and even a small temple. It was remarkable to think that these were the homes of the skilled workers who dedicated their lives to creating the elaborate tombs that have captivated the world for centuries. I found myself imagining their daily routines, their families, and their hopes and dreams.

One of the highlights of Deir el-Medina was the opportunity to explore some of the artisans' tombs. These tombs, though smaller than those of the pharaohs, were decorated with exquisite paintings depicting scenes from daily life, religious beliefs, and the afterlife. The colors were incredibly vibrant, and the details were astonishing. It was clear that these artisans took great pride in their work, and their tombs were a testament to their skill and artistry.

I visited the tombs of Sennedjem and Inherkhau, both officials of the royal necropolis from the 13th-12th centuries BC. Sennedjem's tomb, which was not robbed at the time of its discovery in 1886, and Inherkhau, who was the overseer of artists working in the Valley of the Kings during the reign of Ramses II the Great. The vividness of the representations and the preserved polychrome made a lasting impression on me. It was also interesting to combine scenes whose theme is mortality with fragments of the so-called Book of the Dead, illustrating the judgment of the dead and life in the afterlife. The village is in a very good condition and you can trace its architectural plan.

For lunch, I decided to try Mamma Mia! Luxor, a local restaurant known for its Italian cuisine. After a morning of exploring ancient sites, a hearty meal was exactly what I needed. I ordered a delicious pasta dish, savoring the flavors and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant. It was a welcome break before continuing my exploration of Luxor.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself seeking a place to unwind and reflect on my experiences. Murphys Irish Bar seemed like the perfect spot. Stepping inside, I was greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere, a welcome contrast to the ancient wonders I had explored earlier in the day. I ordered a refreshing drink and settled into a comfortable chair, taking in the lively ambiance of the bar. It was a great way to end the day, surrounded by friendly faces and the sounds of laughter and conversation.

For dinner, I had reserved a table at the 1886 Restaurant, located in the Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor. This elegant restaurant offered a fine dining experience with a French-inspired menu. The ambiance was sophisticated and refined, with candlelit tables and soft music creating a romantic atmosphere. I savored each course, appreciating the exquisite flavors and impeccable service. It was a truly memorable culinary experience.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the QV66 Tomb of Nefertari and the Valley of the Queens, continuing my journey through Luxor's ancient wonders. I am particularly excited to see Nefertari's tomb, as it is renowned for its stunningly preserved paintings and intricate details. Before that though, I'll be sure to have breakfast at the Iberotel Luxor Hotel's Restaurant.

Back at the Iberotel Luxor Hotel, I reflected on the day's adventures. The Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut and Deir el-Medina had offered two very different, yet equally fascinating, perspectives on ancient Egyptian life. From the grandeur of the queen's temple to the intimacy of the artisans' village, I had gained a deeper appreciation for the rich history and culture of this remarkable civilization.

As I prepared for bed, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore these ancient wonders. Luxor had truly captured my heart, and I knew that the memories of this solo expedition would stay with me long after I returned to Berlin.

And as I drifted off to sleep, I thought of Hans and Anna, wishing they could have been here to share these experiences with me. Perhaps one day, we can all return to Luxor together, and I can show them the wonders I have discovered on this incredible journey.
