Farewell, Luxor!

As my journey through Luxor draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had over the past eleven days. Today was all about soaking in the last moments of this enchanting city, from the bustling markets to the serene temples, and savoring the flavors of Egypt one last time. It’s amazing how quickly time flies when you’re surrounded by such rich history and vibrant culture. I'm already anticipating sharing these memories with Hans and Anna back in Berlin.

My day began, as it often did, with a delightful breakfast at the Iberotel Luxor Hotel's restaurant. There's something comforting about starting the day with familiar flavors, especially when you know a day of exploration lies ahead. After breakfast, I decided to immerse myself in the local culture with a visit to the Luxor Fruit and Vegetable Market.

The market was a whirlwind of colors, sounds, and smells. Vendors called out their wares, offering everything from dates to bright citrus fruits. I wandered through the stalls, marveling at the variety of produce. I even managed to pick up some fresh dates, a perfect snack for my travels. It was fascinating to see how the locals shopped, haggling over prices and exchanging stories. The Luxor Fruit and Vegetable Market was a real sensory overload in the best possible way. It was so different from the organized markets I'm used to in Berlin. The energy was infectious, and I found myself smiling at the sheer chaos of it all. It was a perfect snapshot of everyday life in Luxor.

From the market, I made my way to the Luxor Temple Square. Even after multiple visits, the grandeur of the temple never fails to impress me. The towering columns and intricate carvings tell stories of pharaohs and gods, of ancient rituals and beliefs. Today, the square was bustling with activity. I sat for a while, simply observing the people around me, tourists and locals alike, all drawn to this magnificent site. The weather was perfect. The warm sun cast long shadows across the square, creating a magical atmosphere.

I thought about the many festivals that must have taken place here centuries ago, the processions and celebrations that filled this space with life. Today, the square felt like a crossroads of past and present, a place where history comes alive. It's experiences like this that fuel my passion as an archivist. It's not just about preserving documents; it's about understanding the human stories behind them.

Next on my itinerary was a visit to Carter House. As an archivist, I’ve always been fascinated by Howard Carter, the British archaeologist who discovered Tutankhamun's tomb. His house in Luxor, now a museum, offered a glimpse into his life and work. I walked through the rooms, imagining Carter poring over maps and artifacts, meticulously piecing together the story of the boy king. The house was filled with photographs and documents, each one a testament to Carter's dedication and perseverance. I found myself particularly drawn to his study, where he must have spent countless hours researching and writing. It was inspiring to stand in the same space where such a significant discovery was made. I learned that after Carter's death, the house was used as a resthouse for inspectors, and later converted into a museum. In 2014, a replica of Tutankhamun's tomb was installed on the property, adding another layer of intrigue to the site. It's wonderful to see how Carter's legacy is being preserved and shared with the world.

For lunch, I decided to try Georgina Restaurant & Bar, a local favorite. The restaurant had a lovely view of the Nile, and I enjoyed a delicious meal of Egyptian specialties. The flavors were bold and aromatic, a perfect reflection of the country's rich culinary heritage. As I savored each bite, I watched the feluccas sail by, their white sails billowing in the breeze. It was a peaceful and relaxing moment, a chance to recharge before continuing my explorations. I wish Hans were here to enjoy this view with me. He always appreciates a good meal with a scenic backdrop.

In the evening, I chose El Tawab Restaurant & Coffee Shop for my final dinner in Luxor. Despite some mixed reviews, I wanted to experience it for myself. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and I enjoyed a traditional Egyptian meal. While it wasn't the most outstanding dining experience, it was a fitting end to my culinary journey through Luxor. Sometimes, it's the simple, unpretentious places that offer the most authentic taste of a culture. I sat there, sipping my mint tea, and reflected on all the delicious meals I've had during my stay. From street food to fine dining, Luxor has truly tantalized my taste buds.

As the sun began to set, I took one last stroll along the Nile. The sky was ablaze with color, a breathtaking farewell from this magical city. I watched as the lights of Luxor twinkled on, casting a golden glow over the water. It was a scene I knew I would never forget.

My thoughts drifted to the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, which I learned is currently on a world tour, spreading a message of hope. It reminded me of the power of music to connect people and transcend cultural boundaries. Perhaps one day, I'll have the opportunity to see them perform.

Tomorrow marks the end of my journey in Luxor. I'll be heading to the airport, filled with memories and photographs that will last a lifetime. This solo expedition has been an incredible experience, a chance to delve deeper into the history and culture of ancient Egypt. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have explored this remarkable city and shared my adventures with you.

As I prepare to leave, I realize that Luxor has left an indelible mark on my heart. It's a place of contrasts, where ancient wonders meet modern life, where bustling markets give way to serene temples. It's a city that challenges and inspires, that invites you to lose yourself in its mysteries and embrace its beauty. I know that I will carry the spirit of Luxor with me, wherever my travels may lead. Until next time, farewell from the land of pharaohs and gods.

The weather in Luxor during February is generally pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 73°F to 80°F. The days are sunny, and there's very little chance of rain. The wind is predominantly from the north, creating a comfortable breeze. It's the perfect time of year to explore the city's ancient sites and soak up the Egyptian sun. I'm so glad I packed my sunscreen and hat, as the UV index is quite high.

As I pack my bags, I realize that I forgot to bring a portable power bank and sunglasses. These would have been incredibly useful during my explorations, especially for keeping my camera charged and protecting my eyes from the bright sun. I'll definitely remember to pack them on my next trip.

Although my journey is coming to an end, I'm already excited about the possibility of returning to Luxor someday. Perhaps Hans and Anna will join me next time, and we can explore the wonders of ancient Egypt together. For now, I'll cherish the memories I've made and continue to share my experiences with you through my blog. Thank you for joining me on this incredible adventure!
