Family Adventure in the Cultural Heart of Chiang Mai
Day 4: Wild Encounters and Melodic Nights: Our Chiang Mai Zoo Adventure
A day of animal adventures at Chiang Mai Zoo, followed by delicious Thai cuisine and soulful blues music under the Chiang Mai sky.
Creatures Great and Small
Today was a day dedicated to the wonders of the animal kingdom, followed by an evening of delightful culinary experiences and soulful music. It’s amazing how immersing ourselves in nature and culture can create such lasting memories. From the playful antics of monkeys to the soothing melodies of a blues bar, Chiang Mai continues to surprise and enchant us at every turn.
Our day began with an early start, fueled by excitement and a hearty breakfast at Freshtime food and juice. I opted for a smoothie packed with local fruits; it was the perfect way to kick off our adventure at the Chiang Mai Zoo.

Hans and Sofia were equally eager, and after a short taxi ride, we found ourselves at the entrance, ready to explore.
The Chiang Mai Zoo is nestled at the foot of Doi Suthep mountain, boasting a wide array of animals from around the world. Sofia was absolutely thrilled, her eyes wide with wonder as we entered. Our first stop was the aviary, where colorful birds flitted about, their songs filling the air. Sofia giggled as a parrot squawked a greeting, its vibrant plumage a stark contrast to the lush greenery.

As we wandered through the zoo, we encountered elephants, giraffes and zebras. Sofia insisted on feeding the giraffes, her little hand outstretched with a bundle of greens. It was a precious moment, watching her connect with these gentle giants. Hans, ever the photographer, captured the scene, preserving the memory for years to come. I must admit, seeing the animals in their enclosures did tug at my heartstrings a little. I always grapple with the ethics of zoos, but I tried to focus on the conservation efforts and educational opportunities they provide.
The best part of any journey is the unexpected moments of joy and connection that make the experience truly unforgettable.
Next on our list was the Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium. Stepping into the underwater tunnel felt like entering a different world. Sharks glided overhead, while schools of colorful fish darted among the coral reefs. Sofia was mesmerized, pointing and exclaiming at every new creature she spotted. I found myself equally captivated, marveling at the beauty and diversity of marine life. The aquarium was well-maintained, and the exhibits were informative, making it a worthwhile experience for the whole family.

By lunchtime, we were all famished. We decided to try Nun's Restaurant, known for its authentic Thai cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to sample the flavors of Chiang Mai. We ordered a variety of dishes, including Pad Thai, green curry, and Tom Yum soup. Sofia, surprisingly, enjoyed the Pad Thai, while Hans and I savored the spicy curry. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous, making it an excellent value for the price. I appreciated the use of fresh, local ingredients, which added to the authenticity of the meal.

After lunch, we returned to the hotel for a short break. Sofia was starting to tire, and we all needed a moment to recharge before our evening activities. I took the opportunity to catch up on some writing, while Hans and Sofia enjoyed a nap. It's important to pace ourselves on these trips, especially when traveling with a young child.
As evening approached, we ventured out again, this time in search of some live music. We had heard great things about The Good View Bar & Restaurant Chiang Mai, a riverside establishment known for its lively atmosphere and delicious food. The restaurant was packed when we arrived, but we managed to snag a table with a view of the Ping River. The ambiance was perfect, with twinkling lights and the gentle sound of the water creating a magical setting.

We ordered some appetizers and drinks, settling in to enjoy the music. The band was fantastic, playing a mix of classic rock and Thai pop songs. Sofia, initially shy, soon found herself tapping her feet to the rhythm. Hans and I enjoyed the music, sipping on our cocktails and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. The Good View Bar & Restaurant was the ideal spot to unwind after a busy day, offering a combination of good food, great music, and stunning views.
But the night was not over! We decided to check out Boy Blues Bar, known for its smooth blues music and cold drinks. The bar was smaller and more intimate than The Good View, but it had a charm all its own. The band was excellent, playing soulful blues covers that had the crowd swaying and singing along. I am not the biggest fan of Blues music, but the atmosphere was great and the band was genuinely good.

Hans and I took turns sipping our drinks while keeping an eye on Sofia, who was surprisingly well-behaved, perhaps lulled by the mellow music. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life: good company, good music, and a shared experience.
As we headed back to the Roseate Hotel Chiangmai, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the wild encounters at the zoo to the melodic nights at the bars, Chiang Mai had once again exceeded our expectations. I am so happy to be able to share these experiences with my family. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Royal Park Rajapruek and Bhubing Palace, hoping for another day filled with wonder and discovery. I am keen to see what those locations offer!

Back at the hotel, Sofia was fast asleep, her face peaceful and content. I tucked her in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with her. As I drifted off to sleep myself, I couldn't help but smile, already looking forward to the adventures that tomorrow would bring. I am so happy we decided to come to Chiang Mai!
Today was a day of contrasts, from the wild wonders of the animal kingdom to the soothing melodies of the blues. It’s these kinds of days that make travel so rewarding, reminding us of the beauty and diversity of our world.
“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.” I have always loved that quote, and today was a perfect example of its truth.
And as I close my eyes, I can still hear the soulful music of Boy Blues Bar, a sweet lullaby that carries me off to sleep. Goodnight from Chiang Mai!
Tomorrow we are off to see the Royal Park Rajapruek and Bhubing Palace. I am keen to see what they have to offer. I think Sofia will love the gardens at Royal Park Rajapruek!
