Whispers of the Ancient Forest

Today was a day of deep connection with nature and delightful culinary experiences, reinforcing why I chose Yakushima for this solo journey. It's amazing how a place can feel both ancient and vibrantly alive, all at the same time. The island’s energy is palpable, seeping into every corner of your being. It’s a day I’ll treasure, filled with the scent of cedar, the taste of local flavors, and the quiet joy of solo exploration.

My day began with an early start, fueled by anticipation and a quick breakfast at Michikusa. This charming spot offered a traditional Japanese breakfast that was simple, yet satisfying. It was the perfect way to prepare for a day of hiking and exploration. The set menu included grilled fish, miso soup, rice, and some local pickles. It was a hearty and delicious start to the day, and I felt ready to tackle the trails ahead.

After breakfast, I headed straight to Yakusugi Land, eager to immerse myself in the island's famed ancient cedar forests. The drive itself was beautiful, winding through lush greenery and offering glimpses of the coastline. As I got closer to Yakusugi Land, I noticed the air getting cooler and fresher, carrying the distinct scent of cedar.

Yakusugi Land is a designated Natural Recreation Forest, and it truly feels like stepping into another world. The park is home to numerous *yakusugi*, cedar trees over 1,000 years old, and offers a variety of hiking trails to explore. I paid the 500 yen donation at the entrance and grabbed a map, feeling a surge of excitement as I planned my route. I decided to tackle the 150-minute course, a medium-difficulty trail that promised stunning views and close encounters with some of the oldest trees in the forest.

The trail was a mix of wooden walkways and natural paths, winding through the dense forest. Towering cedars, draped in moss and ferns, created a cathedral-like atmosphere, with sunlight filtering through the canopy in ethereal beams. The silence was broken only by the sound of birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves, creating a sense of profound peace. I was completely alone with nature, a feeling I find incredibly restorative. I made sure to wear my hiking boots, which were essential for navigating the sometimes uneven terrain.

I passed several notable trees, each with its own unique character and history. The Buddhasugi, with its gnarled branches resembling a meditating Buddha, was particularly impressive. The Futagosugi, two trees intertwined at their base, symbolized the interconnectedness of life. And the Sennensugi, estimated to be over 3,000 years old, stood as a silent testament to the passage of time.

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

The highlight of Yakusugi Land was undoubtedly the Daio Sugi, a massive cedar that was once thought to be the largest on the island. Although it’s no longer considered the tallest, its sheer size and presence were awe-inspiring. I took the short, 15-minute walk from the bus stop to reach the viewing area, and the sight of the Daio Sugi was truly breathtaking. Standing at 24.7 meters tall with a girth of 11.1 meters, it felt like gazing upon a living monument. The marked trail was easy to follow, and I took my time to soak in the peaceful atmosphere.

After a fulfilling morning of hiking, I was ready for lunch. I made my way to Aqua Cafe, a charming spot known for its delicious seafood pasta and *omurice*. The cafe had a fashionable interior and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, making me feel right at home. I decided to try the seafood pasta, and it was absolutely divine. The scallops were perfectly cooked, bursting with flavor, and the shrimp was tender and succulent. The pasta was served with a side of warm carrot soup, which was a delightful surprise. It was the perfect meal to replenish my energy after the morning's hike.

With my belly happy and my spirit rejuvenated, I decided to explore some of the local shops in the afternoon. I stumbled upon Yakushima No Kokusan Tatami Nakajima Tatami Shop, a traditional shop specializing in *tatami* mats. I've always admired the craftsmanship and artistry of *tatami*, and I was eager to learn more about the process.

The shop was a treasure trove of woven mats, each with its own unique pattern and texture. The owner, a friendly and knowledgeable artisan, explained the history and techniques of *tatami* making. He showed me the different types of rushes used, the intricate weaving patterns, and the meticulous process of stitching the mats together. I was fascinated by the level of skill and dedication involved in creating these beautiful and functional pieces. Although I didn't purchase a full-sized *tatami* mat (transporting it back to Berlin would be a challenge!), I did buy a small *tatami* coaster as a souvenir, a reminder of the island's rich cultural heritage.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to hiyoriya for dinner, a small vegan restaurant offering macrobiotic options. I had heard great things about their food, and I was excited to try some local, plant-based cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a simple, natural decor. The menu featured a daily special, a set meal that showcased the freshest seasonal vegetables. The meal was delicious and nourishing, a perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure. The flavors were subtle yet satisfying, and I appreciated the care and attention that went into preparing the meal.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall and Inakahama Beach. I’m looking forward to learning more about the island’s marine life and enjoying some time by the ocean. I might even catch a glimpse of some sea turtles! And perhaps I'll stop by Hitomekuri for a drink in the evening to celebrate another day well-spent.

The weather today was typical for Yakushima in July: warm and humid, with occasional showers. I was grateful for my rain gear, which kept me dry during a brief downpour in Yakusugi Land. The temperature hovered around 27°C, making for comfortable hiking conditions. I made sure to stay hydrated throughout the day, refilling my reusable water bottle whenever I had the chance. I definitely could have used bug spray today as well; I seemed to have forgotten it at my accommodation.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Yakushima is a truly special place, a sanctuary of natural beauty and cultural richness. It's a reminder of the importance of preserving our planet's precious resources and celebrating the diversity of human traditions. This solo journey is proving to be a transformative experience, one that is deepening my connection to myself and to the world around me. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I think I'll make sure to pack that bug spray!
