Finding Peace and Art in the Seto Inland Sea

Today was a day of embracing Naoshima's unique blend of art, nature, and culture. From exploring serene coastal spots to indulging in local culinary delights and experiencing unique art installations, it was a day that truly captured the essence of this island. The weather was crisp, the air was fresh, and the artistic spirit was vibrant, making it a day to remember.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Tee's DELI GROCERY. I'd heard whispers about their vegan options, and since I'm trying to incorporate more plant-based meals into my diet, I was eager to try it. Hans, ever the adventurous eater, opted for their famous jerk chicken plate. The little deli was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all drawn in by the promise of good food and good vibes. The falafel sandwich I had was bursting with flavor, a delightful mix of spices and fresh ingredients that left me feeling energized for the day ahead. Hans raved about his jerk chicken, declaring it some of the best he’s ever had – high praise, indeed, coming from a man who takes his chicken very seriously! I made a mental note to try the jerk chicken the next time. Perhaps I could even try to recreate it back home in Bonn, adding my own Seychellois twist.

Fueled and ready, we set off to explore Tsunosaki, a point on the island known for its scenic beauty. The crisp February air nipped at our cheeks as we walked along the coast, the sea stretching out before us in a shimmering expanse of blue. The landscape was dotted with intriguing rock formations, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore was incredibly soothing. I took out my camera, snapping photos of the scenery, trying to capture the essence of this tranquil place. It was a perfect spot for contemplation, a place where the beauty of nature and the creativity of humankind seemed to blend seamlessly.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, in the quiet corners of the world where art and nature intertwine.

Next on our itinerary was the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima. This was an experience I had been particularly looking forward to, a chance to immerse ourselves in art, quite literally. Designed by Cai Guo-Qiang, this outdoor installation combines elements of Feng Shui with a Jacuzzi, offering a unique cultural experience. We had booked our spot in advance, as it’s only available on Sundays and requires a reservation. As we approached the site, I was struck by the serene setting, with views of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands.

Changing into our swimsuits in the provided changing rooms, we stepped into the warm, bubbling water. The bath was infused with Chinese herbal medicine, and the aroma filled the air, adding to the sense of relaxation. We were joined by a few other travelers, and we chatted about our experiences on Naoshima, sharing recommendations and stories. It was fascinating to learn about their perspectives and to connect with people from different corners of the globe. The Cultural Melting Bath was more than just a bath; it was a communal experience, a chance to connect with others through art and culture. As I soaked in the warm water, gazing out at the stunning scenery, I felt a sense of peace and contentment wash over me.

After our rejuvenating bath, our stomachs started to rumble, so we headed to Luke's Table for lunch, which was conveniently located near our lodge. This restaurant is known for its pizzas and grill dishes, and it was a welcome change of pace from the traditional Japanese cuisine we had been enjoying. Hans, always a fan of pizza, ordered a seafood pizza, while I opted for a grilled vegetable platter. The food was delicious, the ingredients fresh and flavorful. We sat on the terrace, soaking up the sun and enjoying the panoramic views of the ocean. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge after our busy morning.

In the late afternoon, we decided to do a little shopping at the Chichu Art Museum Ticket Center. Even though we didn't visit the museum today, I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for my family back home. I found some beautiful postcards featuring artwork from the museum, as well as a few small trinkets that I knew my nieces would love. Shopping here was a treat in itself, as the center was filled with unique and artistic items that reflected the spirit of Naoshima.

As evening approached, we made our way to Restaurant EN for dinner. This restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, who praised its fresh seafood and traditional Japanese dishes. The restaurant was cozy and intimate, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We ordered a selection of dishes, including sashimi, grilled fish, and tempura. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were delicate and refined. It was a truly authentic Japanese dining experience, one that I will cherish for a long time.

To cap off our day, we decided to visit maimai, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. We ordered a couple of local craft beers and sat on the terrace, enjoying the cool evening air. The bar was buzzing with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the laid-back vibe. We chatted with a few of the locals, learning more about the island's history and culture. It was a perfect way to end our day, soaking up the local atmosphere and enjoying the company of new friends.
