Today was all about uncovering the secrets of Gravina in Puglia, a town that truly lives up to its name, which translates to 'gorge'. Hans and I spent the day exploring its depths, both literally and figuratively, immersing ourselves in its history, culture, and of course, its delicious cuisine. It's days like these that remind me why I love travel so much – the chance to peel back the layers of a place and discover its hidden heart.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Murgiana. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign, and the aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air. I opted for a simple but satisfying pastry and cappuccino, while Hans, ever the adventurous one, tried a local specialty, a savory pie filled with ricotta and spinach. We fueled up, ready for a day of exploration. The staff were friendly and the service was quick. The exciting atmosphere of the restaurant definitely helped to start our day off right.

First on our agenda was the Grotta di Sant'Oronzo in Turi. Though technically in Turi, it was a short drive and well worth the detour. Descending into the cave, I felt a sense of stepping back in time. Legend has it that Saint Oronzo himself preached and administered the Eucharist here during his persecution. The cave was rediscovered during the plague in the Neapolitan kingdom of 1656-58 and became a place of prayer. The history was palpable, and the unique geological formations added to the sense of wonder. The tiled floor with its 238 decorated tiles, each with unique and fascinating motifs was a sight to behold.

Back in Gravina, we ventured into the Gravina Sotterranea. This underground tour was an absolute highlight, offering a glimpse into the town's hidden world beneath the surface. We explored ancient rock churches, cave dwellings, and even an underground quarry. It was fascinating to learn how the town's inhabitants had utilized these spaces over the centuries, from ancient civilizations to more recent times. Hans was particularly intrigued by the network of tunnels and passageways, imagining the stories they could tell. The tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, bringing the history to life with vivid descriptions and anecdotes. I found myself thinking of my childhood in Anse Boileau, Seychelles, and how we often explored the hidden coves and rock formations along the coast. This was a different kind of exploration, but the same sense of adventure and discovery was there.

For lunch, we chose La Cantina della Canonica. Located in Sant'Agata di Puglia, the restaurant is known for traditional cuisine based on local recipes and typical local products. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. Hans and I shared a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, accompanied by a glass of robust red wine. It was the perfect way to refuel after our underground adventures. We enjoyed the local cuisine, traditional recipes, and typical local products.

As evening approached, we made our way back to Bari for a pre-dinner drink at Speakeasy Bari. This cocktail bar, reminiscent of the clandestine bars of America's Prohibition era, was a delightful surprise. The ever-changing drink menu featured creative cocktails crafted with local ingredients. Hans opted for a classic Negroni, while I tried one of their signature creations, a concoction of local gin, citrus, and herbs. The atmosphere was buzzing, and the bartenders were clearly passionate about their craft. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The staff was very friendly and spoke English.

For dinner, we decided on Ristorante Ubi Maior. Though technically in Ruvo di Puglia, the restaurant is known for its rich tradition of Pugliese dishes. The location has a relaxing atmosphere and is decorated in a modern style with art and culture. Hans and I both agreed that it was a perfect ending to a perfect day. The chef's passion for cooking was evident in every bite.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Parco Naturale Regionale Terra delle Gravine, hoping to see more of the region's natural beauty. We also plan to stop by Made in Puglia to pick up some souvenirs.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had today. Gravina in Puglia has truly captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. This trip with Hans has been so wonderful, and I am so happy to be sharing these experiences with him.
